    2. eq2 -  Really immersive game.. tons of stuff to do.. good community

    3. guild wars - Not a bad game at all but once you have got through it all then the PVP side of things cant hold you for long.

Anybody that has been here longer then a day knows that MMORPG.com has always been anti-wow.

    This proves nothing.

However, numbers of subscriptions proves everything.

True. EQ2 is seen as some sort of god over all games and WoW is the example of how no game should ever be. In the end Blizzard earns more cash than the most other games out there, no matter how high rating they got on mmorpg.com.

Of course wow makes more money and have more subscriptions....... Look at the kiddies...wow is based for the kiddies to where eq2 is mature based ... that is a huge difference. Wow can keep the kiddies too gotta love those cartoonish graphics lol..

"when you want to play a real game and be in a mature community play eq2 it's worth it"

It's funny, but the last few survey's I've seen have shown that the average age of a WoW player was 26.7ish.

Of course maybe it's not rated as high, because they are too busy playing to bother posting?

    Lets take a look.

WoW has been off that list for many months, I think over half a year now.

If we look at the press releases, we see that during those six months, WoW's subscribers numbers keep rising, while the rankings here kept dropping.

So what does that tell us kids? Thats right, the rankins on the front page of mmorpg.com means absolutely nothing. They are not related to the popularity of  a game, or its quality.

Latest survey show us that the average age of WoW players is 27.

    Thread ends..

That top 7 lists shows what the majority of the members of MMORPG.COM play.

This site is 100% geared towards attracting people to new games, people who frequent here are searching for new games to play.  Deep down that is why we are all here, because we want to know about the next great thing or we are not entirely satisfied with our current MMO.

If by World of Warcraft "falling fast" you mean that for over two years it is still on the top ten best selling software titles each month, then yes you are right.  All those millions of dollars in new sales must be killing the company as this chart so accurately depicts.

If by good job SOE with EQ2 because it is still merging servers due to slacking population, then yes you are right.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to set the records straight.  You can put your head back in the sand now.

WoW is still king for now.

You dont see it here rated as no 1 because:

    1.  A few milion of the player base are too casual "to visit and register" to be able to rate anything on MMO related sites.

When they got free time they just wanna play.

    2. A few other milion are from Asia. they dont know/care about EU/US mmo sites.

    3. A few milion are small children that just play.

    4. The rest never heard of mmorpg.com or would never bother to rate games.

The hardcore gamers that are here didnt give a high score probably because they played it got bored, got over it or they just simply arent into the cartoonish kind of graphics.

But we all know...WoW is the king. maybe not the most loved game out there but the most played.

I for one got bored with it but I still got an active account and check whats new pretty often and do some casual BG PVP.

No other game kept me as a subscriber for so long .

Oh noes EQ2 merged some servers two years ago, it’s population must be plummeting like a rock now!

    -         Of the games in the top 7 only LoTRO and CoV (sort of) are newer then WoW. So it isn’t a “newness” thing.

    -         WoW was the highest rated game on this site for over a year, and was fighting for top spot quite awhile after that.

    -         WoW sustained a 9.2 rating for a long time, back when EQ2 was sitting at 7.8. This and the point above pretty much disprove any anti WoW bias.

    -         Except for it’s first week of release WoW had trouble outpacing LoTRO presells.

    -         There is a current broad base of unhappiness with WoW.  Many causal players see TBC as more of the same thing they were already tied of while the more hardcore players see TBC as breaking the endgame

    -         Blizzard hasn’t issued a press release about population since just after TBC came out.  They have however started a massive mailout ad campaign.

    Back to the OP:

1- LoTRO: Turbine did a good job of this one.

2 – EQ2: best live dev team in the business

3 - Guild Wars: free, but also receives high grades for it’s arena PvP

4 – DAoC: may be getting a boost due to WAR hype, but still a good game

5 – CoV: Fun, casual and great character creation. Great game, and groundbreaking in many areas but should be lumped with CoH in the rankings

6 – EVE the purest Player driven Virtual world on the list. Should be near the top of not for dev scandals and an increasing tendency to favor higher skill point players.

    7 – CoH: see CoV

Don't knock CoH and CoV -- they have the best, fastest combat system going with exceptional character design and the ability to create a nice variety of skillsets.  Yes, it's grindy but so is every other mmo.

This is NOT a hardcore site. If anything the biggest reason WoW fell in the rankings was it’s hardcore endgame. It’s casual game pre level 60 received high marks here, but a lot of people changed their minds when they reached 60

Funny you stuck a dead game on there in DAoC.  Servers are practically empty.  Good luck trying to find a group.

EQ2 just merged some servers this month in Europe.  Sorry I wasn't more clear for you.  Warcraft had to split servers due to population overloads recently.

I never said that it was plummeting like a rock, just making a realistic comparison.  You can theorize on how people secretly hate WoW all you want if you think that is what is happening.  The truth is that the game is still in the best selling list month after month and the active subscription rate broke 8 million.

You are right though, they have not released a new milestone announcement of breaking 9 million ACTIVE subscribers.  Maybe it has tapered off or is declining.  Time will tell.

However, SOE was seen posting 800k total subscribers in 2005 and 600k in 2006.  I feel accurate in saying that populations are slacking.  You call it whatever you want.  Seeing that I can't even find a single SOE game on the shelves in my home towns Best buy, compusa (now gone), Circut city or gamestop I don't expect any raise in populations.

If every WoW fanboi came on mmorpg.com and voted their favorite game im sure WoW would be #1 for years to come, their just too buzy having fun and playing it i guess?

Meh. They merged the language specific PvP servers. These were never popular to begin with so it’s hard to see how it can be an indication of a decline in population.

I’ve no idea where you are getting that 800K number from.  The only official numbers you will find for SOE these days is in the Sony financial reports and it has never appeared there.

The only other comments on subscription numbers I can recall is a remark several months ago by Scott Hartsman that they were pleased with the improvement in their retention rates. A little while before that he was commenting on the fact it was difficult to find EoF boxes when it was released. He noted that it had outsold either of the previous EQ2 expansions within its first couple days on the shelf and that 5 of their 6 top distributors had already reordered.

World of Warcraft was just easy to pick up and play. That was what the dev's were gunning for: bring new people into the genre because the game is easy to play. Thats where EQ2 and most of the others fail, you cannot just pick up and play as easily as WoW. Most of the communities, are elitists in the other games. I must admit though in Everquest 1, I met some of the nicests people I ever met in a game.

No, I do not play World of Warcraft, I did at one point but it got boring.

  • Daffid011Daffid011 Member UncommonPosts: 7,945
The sub numbers were listed on the SOE site.  One that I saw was from a job application for the lead community relation position or something like that, where they listed their total subscriptions and that the desired position would be responsible for a variety of things dealing with them.  At the time it was 800k, but I forget the exact number.

1: Lord of the Rings Online, because its new and had a very good release

2: Guild Wars: Factions, because GW is amazing

3: Guild Wars: Nightfall, because GW is amazing

4: Everquest 2, because EQ2 is what a traditional mmo is all about

5: Guild Wars: Prophecies, because GW is amazing

6: City of Villians, not really sure why

7: Dark Age of Camelot, because it was great when it was new and nothing has managed to replace it yet

8: City of Heroes, maybe people like the character customization

9: EVE, it isnt in first anymore because CCP got in trouble with its playerbase

    .... a bunch of okay games ...

    ... some crappy games....

    ... some really crappy games....

    ...and finally:

19: World of Warcraft, really popular game, but casual gamers dont visit this site, only mmorpg players do, and seeing how WoW isnt much compared to other mmos, its low on the list, especially for how much it cost to make.
