why do mmos all end up the same or atleast most of them

Grind!!!!!!!!!!!!



you know you all hate it but theres nothing you can do. i mean come on why cant we have a game like runescape were it takes me to lvl 102 to complete all the quests which is fun. i love runescape go ahead and flame me for it but its just such a classic game who doesnt love to slay dragons and lvl 333 monsters every now and then and get dragon plate legs.

    Back on topic: Almost all mmos end off in grinds. Why? lack of creativity in developers or they are just being lazy.



    we need a new breed of mmos

    and

    2. Dangerous



    Putting something original and sounds cool in a game that is doing great could really hurt the subscriber base if alot of the subscribers think your "original" idea really sucks.

    one man's grind is another man's fun...



    Anyway, they end up the same because developers are in it for the money, not creativity.  Creativities are good, but only if it can truly attract people to the game, other than that you'll get repetitive ideas that will get to be a grind to many... (even if some people like the grind)







    New ideas aren't hard to find, but it's harder to push since the final decisions of the game is being decided by the business side, not the creative side of the company.

    Let's give you an example to play with;

    Not too many years ago (Yeah, right, I'm just getting old) in Sweden, there was One telephone company.
    It was owned by the government and named "Televerket"
    eventually it was old out to the open market and renamed.
    Nowadays there are.. Let me see.. 10ish? Telephone companies...
    They all work on the old "Televerket" (Now named Telia) network, which is owned by Telia and rented to them.
    They all provide one thing: A phoneline.
    With different prices.
    And every Swede Still has to pay Telia a base cost. Telia are also among the cheapest.

    Not very creative? Right?
    People still use the different companies even though there's One that's the cheapest..

    For the companies it's one thing: Solid income from a proven concept.

    For the customers it's about another: Sticking it to The Man and Not using the Big company..
    Which obviously is Worthless as Telia gets most of the money anyways (About two thirds of my total bill is the Base cost..)

    Same goes for gaming. Steal a concept that works, put it in a new shiny box, and sell the same crap all over. Aand Profit!

    Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

    Runescape is just as much of a grind as any other game.  You need to take the cost of an 'original' idea and think of the risk a company takes to implement one. There are millions of people very content playing <Insert Game Here> and the companys are making a steady profit.    If it's not broke, don't try to fix it.    Why risk millions on a MMO when you can plainly see that X type of MMO is working.

    Part of your opening post is a grind aswell, I would class Slaying Dragons and Level333 Monsters for a very rare drop, a grind.  A lot of MMOs end in a grind, because theres nothing else to do, you just need to wait for the Developers to release some new Content or find something in the game you haven;t done already, a lot of MMOs have verious mini-games and all that. 

    Once you complete a Single Player game, what happens to it? You start it again, maybe with a new class or a new character, but basically you're repeating the game again, which is a grind.

    what about guild wars? there is barely any grind in there

    EVE online, its more of a time subscribed that gets you high



    but yeah most of the major MMOGs are grind fests. simple, because that is the genre of most RPG games.

    diablo 1 and diablo 2 is also a grind. neverwinternights as well



    games based on levels will tend to HAVE TO have grind. its the concept of LVL based games. its simple as that



    Guild wars is strategy based therefore no (or almost no) grinding.

    EVE online thats another concept

    there are also many other concepts that dont require grinding

    there is the MMOFPS

    there is also an MMO where there is no lvl and no skills etc... (second life or entropia, but thats not really an MMOGAME)



    the LVL concept is also the safest. its easy to understand and to imply in a game. so like it is most common, it is also cheapest to program, and companies, their first goal is make money second goal is make money for owner and CEO and THEN! comes the wel being of their custumers, and then! thier families and then their product and then their custumers.



    example: (when a company is starting a new project)

    first question they will have at the meeting

    what is it and how will it make money

    second question is how will it work,

    third question is how can we make it cheaper <----- this is where they say LVL system is easiest and cheapest to implement.
