Anyone else think the characters are UGLY?

Everything is so detailed but everyone plays these mundane characters that all look the same except for hair, noses, and skin color.  If these characters were a little more normal looking (I know turbine was probably trying to create a 'look" for their game avatars) then the game might be more fun.

You have lineage 2 which is awesome but boring as hell to play then you have the exact opposite here where the game seems ok but I don't want to give it a chance because all the avatars look goofy and retarded.

Wow still has it beat, propss to Blizzard for creating a cartoony look that is unique as well as appealing.

Additionally all the armor pieces look like crap, doesn't matter what you're using.

Anyone agree?

Yeah I do realize this is trivial in relation to the whole game.  But I was spoiled by WoW.

Have to agree most people look the same and they could've done better.Allthough it doesn't interfere with the fun i have when playing i must say. When i started playing i had bout the same idea as you. Also i wasn't sure if the game itself was any fun.I tried it out of boredom but now i'm logging in every night.Kinda surprised me to be honest.

The avatars could have been done a bit better but they are not that bad i think.

I don't think the armor is bad looking.

Here is 2 shots i just took today just when passing by a few players.

Looks pretty enough for my taste and there is a lot more sweet looking armor out there and this week we will get more armorsets in the update.

The cloth armor could use some more work compared to Medium/heavy armor though.

I'm playing without AA turned on so not the best quality screenshots but this is what it looks to me while playing.

I think my only problem with LOTR was the fact that the lower to mid levels all the armor looked the same. You could get a unique item and it looked just like the chest peice you had when you were level 5. That bugged me, and the problem is it stretched to atleast midrange, I consider 20ish to be midrange for levels. Given I didn't get much further than that, that still bugged me to no end.

I do agree with the character models. And I also am spoiled with the Lineage char models

The problem is then everyone and all have the helm shown, the cloak shown and so on. Which are in case of cloaks all the same and in case of helms just not good looking for my personal taste. People you DO know you can hide them in the UI options? Suddenly a lot more of difference...

I'm not pleased with the character models at all. Besides Hobbits and Dwarfs they all seem to have some very awkward proportions. Specially male human models. And male models generally, females models do "ok". That is my biggest "gripe".

Armor bad at times, but there are quite a few pieces that look quite good. But people do run around with a lot of the same armor

I had a big thread going on about this during beta/after launch... and yeah I think the model choices for human males are the most disappointing too... they need far more variety.  Every single male human is a block-jawed bloke.  What if I wanna make a fatty lore master? I'd love more options... the character creation makes me miss Star Wars Galaxies.......

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

being able to make a human male who looks like the captains pilgrim herald would be good.

No, I had no issue with the character models.... looked adequate from my perspective......

Yep, I hide my helm and cloak for my characters. Makes them look a lot better and more distinctive. And for my hobbit I hide the shoes too so I can see his hairy bare feet.

The characters woul have looked preety neat, if it were 2001.

Well, yeah the characters are a bit bad.   Mostly the elves IMO, a bit 'fruity'

The armor is what is annoying me.  Especially the vests and helmets.  There is a helmet that I've heard referred to as 'it looks like you're wearing a dildo'

And if you go around sporting those vests, wow, just wow.

I've noticed that the high level armor, especially the armor you see in the character creation screen, looks freaking awesome though.

WoW has NOTHING on City of Heroes/Villans. Even though I only played for like 14 days... I found CoH to have to most extensive customization out of ANY mmo. WoW is better that LoTR but isnt that much better. You can still pick out people with the exact character as you.

Yeah, because I totally want to use the word "adequate" to describe character models from a high-proifle video game released in the year 2007.

They don't look ugly but they don't look top notch either but remember this is the very much tweaked Asherons Call 2 graphics engine and that game came out in 2002.

That doesn't mean you can't make good art...

Well, I don't think that you can tweak this old graphics engine anymore so I'm not sure what you really mean.

    Please explain yourself.

I think that best describes it, yes.

    "Adequate".

Not good, not great, just adequate....

The art in a game has nothing to do with the the game engine. It mostly depends on the artist. Certain things like bump mapping, lightning and how much detail it has etc, has of course something to do with the game engine. But the art itself, that is all up to the artist. So if a model looks bad, not bad in the terms of texture detail/polygon count, but in terms of bad art, ugly art, it doesn't have anything to do with the game engine.

Proportions are bad because the artist(s) at Turbine, found these bad proportions good looking or did not have time to do something about them (I hope the latter). It's just plain bad artwork.

I wouldn't say the character styles are ugly, not to be said they couldn't be prettier.

For the most part, I think the approach was to get the most realistic appearance out of something that doesnt exist. Believable "fantasy", if you will.

I think the models look ok, some of the armour looks nice others look awaful.

I think of greater concern is the realy terrible animation system/animations .. most if not all movement animations look awful(female elf run for instance .. enough said).Alot of the animations are actuly recycled from DDO it seems, which may explain why they look bad as the same animation applyed to a compleatly diffrent set of models ant gonna work.. and doesnt.
