Old Neverwinter Nights - AOL Goldbox version

So, I was just wondering, who used to play the old NWN on AOL? I was part of MECH for the last 6 months of my time in that beautiful, 2D, 10 PCs per square max wonderland. I miss it sometimes.

I heard there's a remake out there, but I don't know if I have the heart to join. This thread is just for reminiscing and for all the old NWN'rs to reunite for just a brief moment. If you want to join in the discussion but didn't play, feel free. Don't come on and start talking about how it was sux0rz or how AOL was horrible, that's not the intention folks.

NWN made AOL. People were spending up to $500-1500 a month playing NWN.

I'm facinated by the game, I wish I could play a remake of the classic version. There is a remake, but it's not classic it's called NWN: Ressurection.

Anyway, that other guy is Sir Rellik

Are you talking about Bioware's NWN and Obsidian's NWN2 when you say remake of AOL's NWN? If so, it's not the same thing at all.

EDIT: Snakey cleared it up for me

For the benefit of those who didn't have it cleared up, AOL had a game as part of the service called Neverwinter Nights long before Bioware's version. Or a few years before UO in fact. The game was popular back when AOL still required you to pay by the hour, and, if I recall correctly, the game had its own surcharge as well, so you could end up paying over $5 per hour to play the game.

It was basically a graphical MUD - a very early version of an MMO. I didn't play much, so I won't talk about gameplay, but since it shares a name with the Bioware game, I wanted to clear the air :)

That's who it is, 'eh? I remember that guy, he was a jerk. Hell, all of KAAOS could be summed up that way. In all fairness, that's what they shot for, the most vile guild in NWN. He was one badass in PvP too though. I remember when KEF took over the forest to Triboar one day, I think Rellik single-handledly defeated the first wave out of the cabin. Not really, but it might as well have been.

I wanted to join KAAOS but you had to be 18 (or so the charter said).

And by the way, there is NWN: Resurrection (or was) which was a Bioware NWN, persistent world mod. I'm talking about Forgotten Realms something or other, it's a remake of NWN AOL that uses the same goldbox engine. I played Resurrection, brought back a lot of memories. Unfortunately, it used the Bioware ruleset and classes so it was a lot different also. The old turn based mode sucked when someone went link-dead, but it was part of the experience.

If I can ever find a game that can hook me and have good PVP (besides EVE) I want to make a guild named after Guild of Chaos and have the coat of arms (if the game allows it) be Beazlbul and Sir Rellik fighting like in my avatar. I don't know if they ever fought or really anything about the general workings of the game. But everything I've read about NWN@AOL has said that Beazlebul pretty much invented PVP originally due to a bug in the game and Sir Rellik pwnd pvp, so it would be a nice tribute.

I wasn't there until late winter '91, early '92 and I didn't get into it hard until summer of '92, so I can't be sure about who started PvP. I know that it was known that you could hit others with spells. As to whether that was intentional or not, I don't know. I was angry that they never let us have melee PvP . . . I hated having to roll clams just for the PvP, I wanted to be a Ranger/Mage.

Wow, that was a long time ago. I was just a kiddy when I played that. It was actualy my second online game. The first being a Mud. Nwn being the first Graphical Mmorpg. Sigh I miss it to. I was called Marcus Ironwood. That I think was the golden age of mmorpgs in my opinion. Everything felt so friggin new!

What was your game name? I hated being constricted to the 10 character AOL rule. Made the presence of names like Robn H00d necessary.

I played the old neverwinter nights as well. I had been playing for a while and was in the process of joining KORT when they pulled the plug. I really enjoyed that game. Although I have the new Neverwinter Nights, I haven't checked out the Resurrection mod. I may have to reload it to check it out again. I'm going to be getting Neverwinter Nights 2 as well. Think they will make the mod for that game?

    Damnit, I want an FLCL avatar . . .

I'm hoping they do. It was great to see the old NWN remade in 3D, running into all the same old encounters. The sewer runs were fun as hell. I'm gonna get NWN 2 if the Resurrection team does it again.

Yeah, they didn't put melee in PvP because it was a bug at first. They kept saying they'd add it, never got around to it. So almost everyone was a clam. There were a few Ranger or Paladin mages, and some fighter mages from the dwarven lineage. That's about it though.

I'm all about starting an NWN homage guild now. I should do it for EQ II, just because that's the only MMORPG I play right now. I wonder how many people would be interested in joining.

If we get any more posters wanting to join, we should make a separate thread for it.

UO's beta was in 1996, actual release 1997. But yes, the AOL NWN came years before it as did many others. UO was simply the first really popular one.

I played it for a very long time

For any of you who are wondering what it looked like, if you played (or have ever seen) the old D&D games that SSI made (Pools of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds etc.) thats pretty much the engine..the Gold Box

Hey, Soccer, I got a question for your dad. Why was everyon in KAAOS a prick? Just kidding. I used to love when they'd take over the road to Triboar -- it made the game much more exciting. And listening to them harass all the guys/gals in KEF was entertaining as well. I was in MECH, back when it was still based off the MechWarrior RPG. Mech Venom. I don't think he'd remember me though, I never played with him, just ran across him a lot. I spent a lot of time with different characters but in the same crowd.

I always wanted to sneak into the Hell Hole and see what all the fuss was about, but never got my chance. Anyway, tell him I said hi, as one former NWN player to another.

By the way, what team do you hold near and dear? I'm an Argentina fan for national teams, and an FC Barcelona fan for La Liga.

Hey everyone, I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd help ya out...

The NWN-style game that has been made is called Forgotten World.  A few of the old NW's and players have gotten together and remade it, so to speak.  There's a lot of familiar faces around there, if you're interested.  :)

    Forgottenworld.com

BTW I played AOL NWN way back when, too.  I was Whiteangl.

    :)
