I've been excited about this game since I heard about it some 4 years ago. They have had a few release dates with the most noticable just recently. Whilst I accept they want to release a decent game and hence keep putting that release off. They do need to realise that a person can only be excited for so long. If they dont get the game out soon, I think they will start lossing people who would play it. The current excuse of wanting to get the game sold in shops is rather poor. Just have it direct download whilst you sort out a shop release. Funny enough most people that play MMOs know how to use a computer and wouldn't have a problem with direct download. My excitement level is starting to wane.

I don't get excited anymore.  How many times we saw devs promising the moon and delivering nothing.   the game sure look sweet, but we'll know it's true potential when it launch.

Well, we'll see what happens when the NDA is lifted, Im sure there will be some great reviews and a release date then.

    NDA = Non Disclosure Agreement

It is the box you click on when you play a beta that says if you leak any information or images of a game in Alpha or Beta stage or before the NDA is lifted that you might be liable for legal action and all that good stuff. Usually you'll just get kicked out of the program but theres been cases where lawsuits have been filed.

Awesome overview, thanks. I'll be forwarding this to my friends and including it in my two weeks notice to my employer.

I am a staff writer, I sat down and had lunch with the CEO and spoke with him on a first name basis, the PR girl sent me a box with yo-yo's Ho-Hos and a bottle of spiced rum after our interview (get it yo ho ho and a bottle of rum) and they continue to send me press kits..................... and I STILL got slaped silly with the NDA stick when I posted about stuff from beta that I reported on in my "priview of pirates of the burning sea" here on mmorpg.com

The NDA bat hurts when it hits you

From glancing at the preview, this seems to be something like "Sid Meier's Pirates! Online".

Which is very cool sounding to me!

You won't.  Vanguard shipped early because they ran out of money.  So they shipped what they had and hoped for the best.

We're not out of money.  And we won't ship until it's ready.  You may have to be more patient than you (and we) would like, but we're doing our best to make sure the end result is worth the wait.

I really commend the devs behind this game for really trying to take this genre somewhere it hasn't been before.  I think if this game succeeds, it will breath some fresh air into MMOs.  Whether my guild plays this game or not, I really wish it the best, if you want to know why, check out the blogs on this site.

    Whoa!  Not shipping until ready?

Obviously, you don't have Lucas Arts breathing down your neck...

Sounds like the Blizzard model of game release philosophy...and look where that has gotten them! :)

Last december when the game eventually got a new release date and was set back for half ayear you said it was finished just needed some polishing...so the release date was june.

Now you set the release date back once more but stated it wash finished just needed a "shipping partner" but hey you would keep "polishing" the game.

Now you're saying we are not shipping till the game is done?Ok just to get this right....release is estimated at 2008 earliest?I do like when developers try to deliver a good finished product.I don't like to be "sweetened"with a release date every time and afterwards find out the games release is set back again juts to discover upon release they still  haven't finished the game.Iknow it's a trend these days look at the release date for chronicles of spellborn , gods and heroes etc.But just because it's becoming yet another empty developers promise doesn't make me hate it any less.Like i said i find it nothing more then a "teaser" developers give these days to keep the people stuck on their game.

I don't know that I agree with ya there.  I played WoW at release (and still do...  /wrists) and it wasn't what I would call perfect...  In fact, I "quit" after a month an a half with no plans to return because it was, imo, crap.  They fixt it quick though.  (OMG EXCEPT BLINK!!!!  YOU BASTARDS!!!!)

I still believe that what has made WoW the game it is was their ability to pull in the female population, I know ALOT of women -- including my own -- that would've never thought about playing a PC game -- until WoW that is...

    /shrug

I'm excited about PotBS.  It doesn't matter at what point it finally hits the shelf (or download), I'm going to spend the $100 (yep, two copies) regardless.  Everything I have read and seen about PotBS has convinced me that it is worth that much just to check it out -- I just hope the woman can get into it cause if not I'll be stuck in WoW for another two and a half years...

So far the word is "gaurded optimism" in my guild.  With the beta and all a few of our guildies will file preliminary reports.  We've heard a lot of promises from gamespast.

Some of the features they are promising in this game are either downright cool, or have a ton of potential.  Yet time and time again promises have been made by developers, only for nothing.  (Vangaurd, Dark and Light, SWG, the list goes on.)  SOme of this was financial (or lack thereof), some was attempting to be too greedy.

One thing I know for sure. This goes right, our guild is expected to have well over 100-125 players flying our banners within the first month.

I dont know, the dev here from Flying Labs seems pretty sincere about whats going on. He could be blowing smoke up our asses by saying stuff like " THIS IS GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZE GAMING RARRR!!!" or other such nonsense. But he seems really sincere and honest and it is working for him.

WHat country you looking to represent? The guild Im in did a poll and we have around 100 people ready to join when the time comes, though I wont say what guild Im in, but we're pretty well known.

We will be a guild flying the flag of the British Empire.  We are in the process of building our Council for when the game goes live.  If your going to be british, send me a pm or what not, perhaps we can work on some co-operation for once the game goes live.  (My guild is known in any game that is community dependent as a broker in the faction to get everyone together.)

And I never tend to doubt a dev's sincerity.  Most the devs I know are people who indeed love gaming, and really want to develop this stuff.

It's the logistics and management sides of it that make me incredibly cynical, being an IT professional myself lol.  So can it be delievered in a fashion that is timely and works?

Yup, same here.  I don't trust managment, because I know how they think.  I used to be in management! Logistics is no walk on the beach, either, it's tough, and it's where the rubber seriously meets the road.  As we used to say back in the Army, amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics.

The game does interest me but I have one issue with it and that's the pvp. I'm not sure I like the idea of merely fighting in (and over) port vicinity when enough unrest has been built up. Somewhat sounds to me like asking for permission to kill one another. NPC ships are okay but I want to fight players on the open seas. I believe it was mentioned in the video that quests will affect one's standing towards certain factions? Then why couldn't this also be applied to player actions on the high seas? Imho pirates should be at war with everyone, everywhere (apart from their own faction, although they should maybe be able to attack one another) and thus can attack anyone they please but likewise be attacked anytime. Otoh countries could have official standings and player standings. For instance player A's actions towards nation B (as in attacking their ships) without any status of war between these two nations would anger them decreasing his standing and eventually with enough assaults they kos him. Further more if player A acts alone he may get outcast by his own faction and 'become' a pirate (perhaps with an option to rehabilitate himself, return loot plus a bonus, pay the crown etc. or should nation A suddenly be at war with B more or less automatically), whereas if other players  from nation A were to likewise attack nation B a couple of times this would lead to official relations deteriorating and possibly war between A and B, thus enabling pvp between these two anytime, anywhere. Outcasting and perhaps even putting a bounty on these initial troublemakers otoh would lead to improvement of relations with the other nation (and lessen standing of those player's towards their former faction) and with everyone being able to attack these players, make it sort of a ganking protection. Historically the crown would probably decide who to outcast and what relations/stance to take with another nation but since this is a game I suppose a voting system or perhaps putting someone in charge (vice-royal) would be sufficient.

I suppose what I have in mind is a more dynamic, interactive relation effect and essentially some ffa pvp, and since EVE was mentioned in the article I guess something similar to their corp wars.

I think it is more for people who don't want to constantly have to worry about PvP.  Though perhaps they could do a "ffa pvp" server or something of the sort.  Has to be a way to appeal to both sides.

The idea of community having a very important role in factions is something I've always wished could happen.  (i.e. heads of factions being elected by the community.)  The only problem is a lot of people don't have that kind of play style that demands so much involvement.  I wrote about it last year here on this site about interesting ideas for factions in my column.  (I can't remember the link it's been so long ago lol.)
