I wonder... They almost had 6 extra months now... I think VG was doomed from the start. If you only have half the budget of the competition (EQ2/Wow/Lotro) and you try to make a game that is more than twice as large, you're going to have to cut some serious corners.
They actually had a huge budget, the second biggest right after world of warcraft (30 million) which was apparently wasted on making this shade of a game that could have been. A shame really.
If only the company didnt make this game ahead of this time and gave this game the attention it deserved this game would of rooocked.
I have to disagree with you. I am running a Vista system, two 8800 SLI, and 4 gig of Ram, 4.2 gig cpu. I run the game at max graphics and it is the most beautiful game out there, and that goes for Oblivion also ( and yes I have it).
I do undertstand most people's frustration however. If you came from WOW and played Vanguard on the lowest settings you wouldnt like it , or EQ2 for that matter.
Some of the older player remember that when EQ1 first came out it really sucked (hardware). I remember it being down for 3 days. And then it still had problems. But all things will get worked out.
With a raid-free server at release, it would have been about half a million players regardless of the bugs, with tons of raid-free servers opening everywhere. (we are talking of the work of 1 or 2 programmer for a month at most)
Now...it is too late for that. As a big chunk of the benefit would be lost by angry raiders on other servers (changing the rules post-release is bad on the existing player-base, as well as not leading to trust from any newcomer who see how you treat your loyal playerbase)...and you miss the release interest, so you miss most peoples who would have enjoyed the raid-free component.
Players which think that the raid-free server was a must would have endure and smile upon bugs a LOT more then other players, since they have less games to refer to.

With that system sure, you could make a turd look beautiful saidly though most people dont want to spend the money on a system as high end as yours. Game developers need to be realistic look at what PC's most of the population have, or else they get ungodly small sub population like vanguards. (FYI I know there are tons of other reasons why VG tanked, but requiring such a high end system was a very large problem.)
If only i could find a troll with a tin foil hat. =(
For the record I run the game on mostly high settings with a few options on medium to high. Its still stunning at that level and when I do turn everything on it really is breath taking. My system is not that huge. 40-60 fps. steady
2x 7600gt 256mb nv, 4400 dual Amd, asus mobo, 2 gig of good ram, good sound card.
So its probably above average and becoming more maintsream each day. I see people crying about the crappy graghics on a low setting because they are using 1 gig of ram and a 6600 gt. Either upgrade or don't tell people the graghics is poor. Its not the game its your rig.
For the record I have seen people using the 8800's and with only 1 gig of ram they do have issues. Ram is essential in this game.
On Varking I have seen the population improve and a lot of loyal fans are there already. If they launched VG this month they would have kept a huge amount of subs because its pretty stable IMO.
Developers please tell it real! Dont say minimum requirement is...... when all that will do is get you to the login screen. The public should know the minimum rig to play the game with nice specs on. low spec bah! whats the point.

Yes you hit it on the head, and that was my point. I love the game, why? Because ,I have a great system. And I am not bragging. That great system has eaten my wallet. But with people who don’t have that GREAT system, they would think the game stinks. And I have to agree with them. What they should have done was made the game good for WOW type system players, and then upgraded to the High end system owners. Then they would have hit the masses. They screwed up like Sony did with EQ2. When EQ2 came out, it looked like crap, until I upgraded.
And Brad wasn't a retard who pissed away 30 million...

their implementation of the unreal engine is TERRIBLE. Their art direction is TERRIBLE. Their lack of lore is TERRIBLE. this game is TERRIBLE. This was suposed to be a AAA title made by experts and it instead looks like a computer art class gone horribly wrong.
Having 2 8800GTX's isn't going to help much because some of the main problems with Vanguard are not just performance but art design and more specifically the horrible, absolutly horrible textures. They look bland and uninspiring compared to any game really.
My opinion on Vanguard is that they should have focused on one continent instead of 3, and spend at least 6 full months polishing the title. Then they could have released the other two continents in expansions.
Oh well, at least the sorrows of Vanguard might teach a few good lessons to future mmo designers on how not to design a game.
It is a game with loads of great ideas, has the ability to appeal to a large audience, and offers something for everyone.
Unfortunately, it is unplayable for some, has a lot of bugs and crashes, and most importantly, has no soul...
This is a perfect representation of what NOT to do when creating a game...It seems like their art and lore was an after-thought. They sought out to create an enormous world with vasts amounts of things to do, but never really had an idea on story, and seem to have ignored the importance of it.
It feels like a buggy game ENGINE, and not a polished game WORLD.

You can walk around pretending the game is fine and just need a little touch up here and there but the game needs a hell of a lot more than bug fixes and touch-ups. Time will tell ... in the meantime, you are the one paying for it ... hahaha...

Funny for you maybe. But doom and gloom incoming of the raiding is destroying any interest for...an achiever like me.
What is present and what is not hardly matter. I would have endure quite many bugs. I would have accept that the raid-free components would be installed later but advertised as present on my server. I would have accept the lag, glitches and so on I keep seeing peoples complaining.
Because I would have trust them to resolve it eventually. At worst I would have taken a break until they fix it or until I crave for more.
But a promise that I will be 20% weaker when they incorporate raiding? No thank, I won't even try the game. Unlike your general thinking, I am not playing to show off and make a quickie impression on other players. I am indeed caring a LOT about uberness in the long run. I am an achiever. You main mistake is you try to judge me by the same social rules you judge raiders. I am hardcore, more then most raiders. But...I am an achiever, not a socialiser.*
Adding 20 levels (or unlimited levels) would make me bump around in happiness and total glee. Adding 5 levels make raiders cry like you just punch them in the face.
We are not alike on anything.
*: That doesn't mean I can't behave like a socialiser for a short period of time, as a side effect. It would never be the driving goal however. True uberness matter. Impressing the other players? Not really, I won't play the game for that. Now, I am human, if I can impress someone, I will; but I won't be doing an activity only to impress them. I can solo XYZ, or group in the slazataranatcha of doom where only the nuts do it, I may impress some peoples, but the only reason I would do it, would be for an achieving reason. Not a social reason. Yes, I would be looking for the loot, or the XP, or something very tangible. If players applaud or ignore me, I would still do it. Remove the progression and give all the praises you want and I would still log off and not doing it.

ok Class this is a text book example of how a comment on a game turns into a personal attack. Had I not been around the block I'd reply and then someone else, and then this guy. We 'd all be aruging about why the color red is better then blue.
Leave the personal attacks out of it ffs. I say the game is a festering pile of crap and I say it with experience, but theres no need to get all personal and say i'm terrible for sharing the opinion of the other 9 million people NOT playing this game.
I can't believe people continue to get fleeced by this title. The best thing people can do is forget about this game and teach the development community a lesson on what NOT to do with a mmorpg .
On Varking I have seen the population improve and a lot of loyal fans are there already.
And yet, I'm wondering, how many of you on Varking are going to stay around once they merge you into the FFA PVP server world? I'm thinking we'll see a bit of a fall-off. (or a migration to the PVE servers)
But back on topic.... there's no point to wonder how good VG (or any game) could have been "if only". You could apply that same logic to countless other failed games and with the proper addition of new features, better stability/performance or deeper lore, yes, they could have been a contender.
Shadowbane was a game I really enjoyed, would have taken far fewer changes to it than VG does for me to have stuck around, but alas...they never got around to them, so I moved on.
For that matter, if DAOC had never implemented TOA/NF expansions I'd probably still be playing that game today.

I still enjoy VG and even though I hear some of the statements about no soul etc. I still paid 6 months up front even after 3 months of game play. However this probably has more to do with finding a great guild and enjoy grouping up with them on Vent and in-game.
A crucial element of any game.
Regardless I always give a new game 6-9 months to prove what they can do. I believe VG has a great starting point already and if they manage to tweak, improve and patch correctly it could have huge potential. For those that say it has poor graghics and art work etc. What game are you playing?? Its the best graghics I have seen in an online game and I have played a lot! Upgrade your rig or use a friend who has because you are definitely not seeing what I am seeing.
