ive heard a lot that DAOC is "the best", "Awesome" and many others and i was wondering exactly why it is so good? because iam thinking of playing.....?
I like it because it is what I expected when someone described PvP to me.
It used to be a lot better IMO way back in the day, shortly after release. It hasn't necessarily become bad, it has just changed somewhat but nevertheless I still like it and enjoy playing DAoC every day.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I forgot to add that whatever accomplishments you achieve out in the pvp area of DAoC has an impact on your entire realm. From money bonuses, to exp bonuses to overall melee or magic damage boosts it all adds up to help the newer people leveling and even the end game people who are out there pvp'ing
This is how I think it should be. When I played WoW none of my wins in the battlegrounds ever counted toward anything but personal gain.

For me, Dark Age of Camelot has always just been the PvP game that puts the "Massive" back into Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Game. I'd say that about covers why I'd say DAoC has some of the best PvP out there.

DAoc Rocks for pvp was the best for any fantasy type MMO ive ever played imho ,somewhat even in skills not like others where certain classes get wiped at ease hope WAR is like DAoC
Daoc pvp is the best because you gain points that make ur charecter better. And the more realm points you have the better at pvp your charecter is and the more skill you get with fighting. So later on when you have alot of realm points you can run with the leet people and win like 8vs100 and thats a blast. But Daoc was the best pre toa.
I love classic server,im gonna re-activate.I have a Friar, cleric, and wizard.did the love for the friar do any good.and I guess I might need that minataur expansion.
DAoC's strong points concerning PvP or as Mythic terms it, RvR: 1) Granted they have battlegrounds, the main focus of RvR in DAoC is the lands between the realms. When DAoC first came out, these frontiers were completely different. Some DAoC veterans might say the old frontiers was a lot more fun, but they would probably also agree that the new frontiers brought a lot more strategy and tactics to the table, with castle outposts being the main addition. Also, guilds could claim ownership of castles and outposts and actually spend bounty points to level these structures and its NPC guardians from level 1 through 10. So when you have a castle thats level 10, the doors are much harder to break down and the NPC guards are a lot tougher to kill. 2) Then you have the epic battles between the three realms, sometimes involving all three realms at the same time. I believe it's these epic battles that is what makes it so fun to play DAoC. Sure, you can find similar PvP in other games, but theres just something about the way DAoC is setup that makes these battles fun and addicting. Whether your in an 8 man team or part of a larger relic zerg with numbers ranging from 24 to almost 100. In my DAoC prime days, I've seen battles with 50+ people on each side and the battle would last for hours. All in all, playing on Merlin server, I learned all to well how devestating the Trials of Atlantis expansion did to the game. Mythic Entertainment, unlike SOE, heard our cries of sorrow and answered with 3 new classic servers with which I started playing again. 3) The only true downfall to DAoC at this time is the limitless ability for any player to play any realm on the same cluster. By cluster, I'm referring to the merging of servers, where populations have dwindled and Mythic tried to compensate by bringing 3-4 servers together. However, you could now have access to any of the 3 realms on a cluster, thus giving anyone and everyone the ability to jump ship on a losing realm to join the winning side. Quite a few veteran's such as myself cried out for a fix of some sort, but this time, it fell on deaf ears. I still love the game, even though I don't play it anymore and I still love Mythic, even though they decided not to fix the cross-realm jumping. Basically, DAoC has the best PvP system to date, because it gives PvP a purpose, not only on an individual scale, but on a realm scale. It's this purpose that keeps the drive to RvR alive and one of the main reason the game is still alive today.
They were doing a poll not too long ago about the cross-server jumping and asking if they should make a timer on it. I voted yes.
Check it out and find out. With the trial you can level up to 24 and farm enough aurulite to buy decent gear for the 20-24 battleground within a few days of casual play. Go there and mess around some and determine for yourself. Make sure you participate in a keep take, some solo time, and some group time while there.
My recommendation:
Unless you are *really* into stealthers (aka rogues), don't roll one for your first toon.
Make sure you download catacombs as it is free now.
Since it is your first time in DAOC, make your first toon a pure damage caster or melee. Playing a healer, hybrid, or support caster could be frustrating unless you really do your research.
At about level 8ish, start levelling by going to the low level instanced dungeons that drop aurulite in catacombs so you can buy yourself some gear. Note that every 5 levels (through 25) you will get a free chest piece and weapon from your main trainer in your realm's capitol city. Also note that there are quests in the starter towns of all 3 realms which give you full sets of armor that will last you until you can get into level 20 aurulite purchased gear.
Once geared up, level up where you please and explore, but plan on farming aurulite for level 24, which means you will be buying the level 30 gear in catacombs.
Lastly, server choice is up to you, but with classic servers you won't have to worry about buffbots for the most part in the battlegrounds although they do exist. If you choose to stay with daoc, being on classic does eliminate the Trials of Atlantis expansion (ToA), which is either or good thing or a bad thing depending on how you feel about the added effort of acquiring and using the gear from that expansion.

Depending on when you left your Friar, you probably won't recognize him now. I stopped playing a Friar not long after ToA and the original "Friar fix", now they are unbelievable.
I started the game about 3 weeks after it was released. I've quit a half dozen or so times and come back to play it pretty continuously through the years.
The reason being, the pvp in THIS game is the ONLY pvp that I've ever had that makes my hands shake on that first fight after a lengthy break from the game.
I dunno what it is, but when I come back to the game, my first solo fight always catches me by surprise and I'm always pumped right after.
I have tried dozens of other games, many of which toute PvP as a selling point. WoW, LOTRO, BF2142, BF2, Shadowrun, EVE, Guildwars... all of these games are either a) too slow (ala EVE and the billion hour gate camps/skill ups) or b) too disconnected (ala wow/bf2-2142 and the complete lack of winning/losing meaning anything outside of a match).
All of these other games are fun, without doubt. But DAoC, despite being an old game now by all accounts, is still the only one in which I can face of against 60+ people and have a GOOD time (less lag by far than most MMO pvp games with such numbers. Not perfect, but not exactly EVE either). It's the only game where I can be a rogue and be a bastard about it in a keep defense or offense (setting up guards, dumping oil, stabbing casters, vanishing, escaping to do it all over again, etc etc).
In the end, it's like a mix of a fantasy MMO and planetside-style mass strategy/conflict.
It's an addicting combination, and pretty much the main reason the game is still being played.
