Is this game still popular? If so, why?

I tried to play this game, downloaded the trial... The community was crap, a bunch of anti-social non helpful types. I was so disqusted at the lack of helpfulness that I immediately reject this game. I mean hell, even EQ had a helpful community. At any rate, I suggest COH if you don't like sitting around for hours doing basically nothing. COH gets you straight into the action.. Also I recommend playing till lvl 8 ...

I love Merlin Midguard. You probably played an RP server. The trial is crap. You really need shrouded isles for the starting isles.

As true in any game of it's age, the players who are social have formed sub-communities and are pretty much invisable to a new player.  What you see primarily are the people who are not accepted into these large groups for one reason or another, and you're beginning to see why.  I'd suggest approaching a well established guild and ask if you can join up.

I had the same thoughts initially and even posted concerns about this and lack of low lvl game. The great thing about htis game is that I think they want you to get high lvl quick so you can RvR.

Task give so much xp it's sick!!!...lol I love it. I've hooked with some great people on Merlin but will be staying on Nimue RP server. I would definitely start on SI if possible because more people do go there.

I even went out and bought Trials of Atlantis even though most people say this broke the game, i just wanted it for the graphics upgrade.

They say that Frontiers and Catacombs will gently ease the level requirements for atlantis so that many low level players can join the artifact quests. They also say that the artifact quests will be easier because it takes a good many people to complete a quest.

This game definetly needs to be played a lot further then lvl8!

On ToA, in my opinion this is just very much underrated. The main reason a lot of high lvl peepz are upset about it is that they need to start a lvl-ing track again to be on top, ToA just expanded the path for high lvl toons... Yes those MLs are hard to get as are the artifacts, but its all about helping each other out and requires more then just to fetch a FG and head out into the frontiers.

    Cheers,

Personally, I'm waiting till EQ2 before I MMORPG again. The graphics engine with Catacombs looks impressive, but EQ2 is promising the ability for any class to be able to solo to the end game. They are also maxing out raids to 24 people and the death penalty is nil.

Now on the flip side DAoC has great PvP if that's your bag. I'm more PVE, but I must admit that the PVP in Lineage2 seemed pretty balanced in the beta at least. Awesome graphics in L2 nearly had me hooked, but the slim character customization eventually turned me off.

So if, like me, you like online games but are turned off by the majority of online players, wait for EQ2 where you'll be able to play your own game when quality companions are found lacking.

In all classes? It's been a while since I played, so I'll certainly take your word for it if that's the case. When I played as an Albion warrior type I recall really having to group past level 20 or so to make any progress.

Yes, you can solo all the way to level 50 in this game. However I don't see why anyone would want to do that. It would take way to long and be pretty boring. If you were having trouble making progress after level 20 with a melee class in albion you were either fighting the wrong mobs or your character was pretty badly gimped ::::04::

Yes daoc can be bad for new ppl just starting the game, but the best thing would be to find a friendly guild to join that will help ya out some. most ppl in the game have already got high lvl toons and pretty much hang out with other guildies or ppl in there alliances so  as a newbie especially in classic you would have a hard time finding anyone else to group with.

EQII is actually hinting forced grouping.

That actually runs counter to what I've read. Could you post some linkage to enlighten me?

Whoops. I am sorry. I meant "EII is hinting forced grouping".

I saw it on the EQII board I think.

I think this game is still popular for the following reasons:

    1)  Great weapons  and armor graphics (best I've seen in a MMORPG)

    2)  Ease of play

    3)  Easy to use interface

    4)  Decent amount of game world content (not great, however)

    5)  Organized P vs P for those into that kind of thing.

    6)  Nice graphics and background music.

Where this game hurts is as follows:

    1)  Often hear the high level game gets old fast.

    2)  Frequent nerfing of classes.

    3)  BIG ONE:  low level game is dying fast.

I think there is not much mmog like daoc about letting this much people do PvP at the same time, this makes me excited everytime

I've played a lot of MMORPGs.  I have left DAoC three times to go try others, but I always end up back. Here's why:

    • DAoC always has a goal that has a reward.  Getting to 50 just to be L50 is not a draw for me.  Getting to 50 so I can take out other realms, that's incentive. (Same goes for getting toons to BG).
    • I really like 8 characters per server.  I actually play 3 L50s and about 5 L24-35's (Alb, Hib and Mid) regularly.  Allows the game to suit my fickle mood. :)
    • I can both solo and group in RvR and PvE.  I like groups, but I hate forced groups.  Sometimes you only have a shore amount of time to play and you can solo.
    • I LOVE the constant game updates, character stats, etc. on the Herald.  I read the posts regularly.
    • I like testing on Pendragon and seeing player suggestions taken into account when appropriate.

There are, of course, things that I hate about DAoC, but overall I have a ton of fun there.

We have a lot of new players on our server (Tristan). There's quite a few lvls 1 - 10 and 10 - 20 on and I've given a lot of gold out to brand new people.

But yeah :( classic areas are not the most populated anymore besides a couple of the dungeons.

I think if you can get on a good server though with helpful people new players still have a chance at DAoC.

    Solo to 50! image

Ya kidding right.  If you solo 75% of the classes in game after lvl 35 you will loose the will to live, long before lvl 50 with the huge amount of downtime, and repeatedly killing the same critters over and over and over and.......yawn.

TOA makes ya do it all agin to stay competitive in RvR - no choice, you have to do it or you will be at a disadvantage which nobody likes - as the whole point of the game is RvR from mini battle grounds all the way to 50 and in the frontiers, you need to be the best you can be.  Im more the pop out, kill a few beasties, come back n chat types meself image

    soloing ? argh !

find i nice group - connect to Teamspeak Server - have fun ;)

Only BD and necro are really good for soloing ..

But i like the group factor in daoc, cause for playing alone i dont need a MMORPG ...

I didn't see this mentioned, but I also found that the realm you started on played a HUGE role in how friendly the people were.

I've heard this from literally hundreds of players and I think that, at least for some, there is a bit of psychology involved in the realm selection process. (for others - lol - this theory flies right out the window).

What I've found is that (and yes I'm generalizing so if you are on a realm listed and aren't this way, please understand that I recognize this is only a sampling and in no way is designed to suggest that "EVERYONE" on a certain realm is that way).

MidGuard - Very cool landscapes, lot of cold bleak looking weather, very overcast.  Trolls, Dwarves, etc.
If you read fantasy the character types available on Mid are commonly the most anti-social of races described in RPGs and popular fiction.  I found that overall, this realm had more introverts in it (along with a surprising number of character type biggots lol - I kid you not, I met dwarven toons that wouldn't only play and group with other dwarves. it was hillarious).  Bottom Line - I found it to be the least friendly of all three realm.

Albion - Very Pretty and classic landscapes, standard Human dominated lands, very powerful character types (overall)
I found this realm to have more power-gamers than the other 2 realms (although the other realms certainly had their fair share).  Power Gamers are busy power-leveling and so don't take the time to chat with newbie players.  Bottom Line - Not as unfriendly (generally speaking as Mid) but 2nd in my list.

Hibernia - Pretty landscapes, Land of Fearies, elves, Celts, etc.
As an Irishman myself, I can say that we Irish definitely have the gift for gab, which is ironic considering how often our moths are full of whiskey and guiness <grin>.  I found this realm to be the most helpful to newb players (note this is true on 8 diff servers I tried).  They were helpful, if you were kind and respectful when asking questions or for help, most other toons (including 50s) would stop and give you answers.  In fact - I'd say that with every single character  ever created on a Hib server, I think that by level 10 they had been given free items from some higher level character "just Because"....

Now I have high level Mids and Albs and have found the people on both servers to be friendly.  However when starting out the game, I went (as a mid dwarf) through 8 servers finding the same results.  SO I then went to Alb on the same 8 servers (sigh I deleted an awful lot of toons) and found the results to be basically the same.
Then I went to Hib and the first server was great, so I randomly made toons on 4 other servers (lol probably still have the little level 5ers out there somewhere) and found that in virtually every case - the people were incredibly friendly.

Having trouble with learning the game - start in hib.  Know all the game mechanics and just want hints on speccing your particular character type?  Pick any server - just know that you should have specific "Spec Line" questions in mind before you start asking away....
