Problem with "Games List" - Games Overated

Just some few things I would like to say

There are way to many games in the "games-list" that are over-rated, for a mmorpg player like me who frequently visits this site to check out new titles this has left me dissapointed. I don't know if it's people purposly making double accounts to raise there game's reputation up, but seriously this is really affecting my trust in this site. I think the MMORPG staff should write more reviews or something - I know it takes a long time but it really does help, even if it's short and sweet, at least we know if it's bad/good from a genuine person. (God I just hope I don't download another game that is rated 8.0 on the games list only to uninstall it 10 minutes after).

    I'm going to have to agree with you here.  I've gone through the same thing you have with the list.  I check what other users have rated it as and it seems like most of the games are rated based on the people who have not played it for very long, or are inexpirenced with the MMO genera.  But when I can see a professional review of a game (be it a well writ review from a user, a staff member of mmorpg.com or another site, or a gaming magazine editor)  it just gives me more of a view of a game, so I can tell if I will really enjoy it, or if it will be just another thing on my "programs to uninstall" list.

    Taste has nothing to do with it, the games that I'm talking about lack content. These games are grindfests, the only quests are fetch quests, and character customization is limited. I have no idea why such a game would be rated so high. Take "Scions of Fate" for example, that rates at 7.7 which is respectable considering top-notch games rate at a mere 8.2+. This is the sort of game I am talking about, and the MMORPG review staff have done a wonderfull job of downsizing it's rating to something more realistic - 5.1. I say more should be done to stop the overating of these games.

    This got me thinking and I took a look at the game list. There are 28 games rated 8.0 or higher with a further 17 games rated at 7.8 or 7.9 which is giving 45 games all within 0.6 score of each other. Discount the top 2 and it 43 games within 0.4 which honestly is a lot. It's also interesting to look at how many times a rating has been given. With games like WoW and Eve around 6-7k mark and others, which have the same rating only having been rated about 1k. The system looks broken.



    This of course can be explain by the simply fact that most people will rate a game they like it and will rarely bother rating something they dont like. Also the fanboys will give everything a 10 hence resulting in high ratings. I do remember the rating used to actually give some indication as to how good a game was but it no longer seems the case. Now I dont pay any attention to the rating score, but look at players comments instead.

    YOu shouldn't. Player comments are biased and to a very very small degree actually from people that have played the games for a longer time.

    I dont think there too bad have to remember alot of people vote so its kinda acurate I may not agree with some of the games but hell its not like Mapel Story is at number 1 :P



    If it was then I would be worried.

    The only real problem for me is that people seem to use a different criteria for judging pay2play games versus free games.  They are much more lenient on free2play games, which leads to scores that are too high in comparison.  There is no way that any of the free games can compare to the top pay2play games.
