What is the news with LOTRO and mods?

A lot of you have been involved with LOTRO  since beta, so maybe some of you have some insider information here.

What is the likelihood that they are going to add mods to the game?  That was something I really liked about WoW.

Any thoughts?

Depends on what you mean by mods I imagine.  There is a limited functionality for modifying the UI to some extent.  Apparently, from what I have read, come june with the first expansion there is going to be more scripting functionality added into the game.  However, I do not think that it will be to the extent of wow where you could basically macro play from start to finish.

I've been in since early BETA 1 and there are no plans to allow mods. They have allowed people to import new skins for the UI, but do not plan on allowing mods that effect game play.

This might just be what I needed to hear to get me to play Lotr's I have never approved of mods of any sort because to me its more challenging to play the game the way the devs created it to play. In WOW you have guilds that believe you absolutly have to have mods to be able to down bosses this is untrue I have been in guilds and downed bosses without mods just as well it just took a good grp that knew their classes to accomplish the task. It also helps prevent keyloggers from getting at players accts. I will have to say Turbine is right by this action it makes the players depend on one another more than some mod helping them cheat their way to victory. I say Cheat because some mods tell you things about the combat that you were not meant to know in the original game design. Way to go on this Turbine

    Have to agree here,

I had been playing WoW for just over 2 and a half yrs, got good at playing my class, but many of the guilds i was in required certain mods to be in it and thought people were stupid for not having them. To be honest a lot of tmods they thought mandatory I thought were too slow, i could do it faster and more efficient than the mods..... eg decursive - for me was a total waste of time and effort - i was much quicker - and yes my main was a Pally.

However there were some mods that were really helpful - AH mods - were the most helpful, crafting options in wow were pathetic, and some mods that you could get were really helpful. To be honest these are the only kind of mods i would really like to see in LOTRo, it basically means that the stuff Turbine havnt got time to get round to doing, other programmers can do for them, freely.

P.S. - I hated the guys who used mods to win a duel, they didnt deserve to win.

I tried to get out - but they pulled me back in.

They do plan to allow people to mod as much as in Wow. That is their goal. But it is moving very slowly, I don't expect anything of it for a long, long time.

This guy is dead on and if you browse lotrointerface.com you'll find dev posts discussing mod plans.  It's a long, long way off.  First we'll see further skin customization.  And then at some point in the future they'll allow mods that intercept data that is being sent to the interface for full customization.  But I wouldn't hold your breath, my guess is around the first Expac in April (or later) of next year.

Many of the most popular mods in games like WoW are not cheats.  They simply modify the way information is displayed to the client.

I used things such as Titan Bar to display my x,y location, money, and number of key items in my inventory in a neat fashion.

Every player is just a little bit different and these types of mods would allow us to further configure our gaming experience to what works best for us.

The most important part of reading is reading between the lines.

Most importantly it allows customization for different playstyles without tying up dev resources on what should be more important things.  My custom WoW mod was in no way a cheat, just streamlined in a way I preferred over the stock.  In fact, it was the best interface I've ever had in any MMO, but that's because I designed it to what i like.  Nothing a dev can do can ever compare to that. <--- See the period?
