My thoughts about GE

After giving GE a good two hour treatment, these are my thoughts about the game.

Pros

- Controlling 3 characters at once is pretty inventive, and shockingly enough, it's pretty good.

- Combat animations are pretty decent.

- Inventive setting.

- It's interesting finding out which classes go well together.

- It has both RPG and RTS elements, which is pretty innovative.

Cons

- Zero character customization. You choose your name and class, that it.

- Camera can by clunky at times.

- Due to the built in bot there is almost no one actually 'playing' the game.

- Quests are the go kill X of this and get Y of that.

GE is a decent MMO. I plan to continue playing it to get a better feel of the game. This is what I found after 2 hours of straight playing. In conclusion, GE is a good MMO, but it's not the best.

Not to criticize you or anyone else, but I will never understand.   WHY people want WASD movement with games like GE.  I mean it just doesn't seem feasible any way you slice it.  First you'd have to remap the skill keys for all 3 players.  Then you'd have to work in some little quick fix for targeting.  Unless you know people with three hands now.  (One on WASD to move, one one right side of keyboard to hit skill keys, and another on mouse for camera movement and targeting.)

Maybe it's just me, but I think WASD in GE and games like GE is just a horrible idea.  That in the end would do more harm then good.

after playing the game more and experimenting with things, your right. WASD wouldn't work w/ GE. I'm gonna edit my post now.

Isn't the SotNW version of the game supposd to add more customizations?  If they want this game to success in the states, it would be smart for them to spend the time to add this functionality.

The camera is typical of PnC games.  You spend a lot of time manually changing the camera as you move along.  I can see people used to WASD getting annoyed with it though.

The built in bot functionality is a problem.  Even if there is a person playing, it's so easy to semi-AFK and not pay attention  It's kinda like Guild Wars or even Final Fantasy XII where you can just guide the toons along and watch them do all the work.

I only played a few hours as well.  There are so few quests.  But already, it's more varied that the beginning of WoW.  The two quests with the little boy aren't typical.

If it's fixed in SotNW than the game will be better. I'm playing under IAH Games until I get a beta invite for SotNW.

How is the built in bot functionality different in SotNW?

Anyways, I've been playing GE quite a bit the past few days and lag is quite a problem.  Lag spikes aren't frequent, but when it comes, combat is fast enough that there is a good chance I'll be dead shortly.  I really do like the game, and I'm looking forward to playing the game on closer servers.  It's impressive the game runs so smoothly considering the servers are so far away.

Fixed the camera eh?  Well I was going to avoid the OB for US release till later.  But if you say the camera is fixed i'll give it a try.   You do know that if I think it isn't fixed.  I'll be sending people in black suits to your house

Hmm... I don't understand the problem you are having with the camera?

I haven't experienced a single problem with the camera or with lag, even for a second. The game runs very smoothly on my computer constantly.

You'll understand most peoples problem with the camera.  When you hit certain confined area's.  Especially certain dungeons when you get too close to a wall.  From my play time already I don't see what changes they've made to the camera.  There are also a bunch of other things about SOTNW that i'm really not happy with so far, but not going to go into it right now.  That would just drag this topic even further to being off-topic.

If you have a problem say it.  There have been many people posting negatives about the game and didn't even realize they could change it (including me complaining about the hotkeys in the sgGE version when there is a way to change them).

My complaints deal strictly with some of the changes they have made for the western audience.   For example the costumes option during creation.  Most of the stuff you see there usually isn't available till 60+.    Like the Musketeers Dragoon Uniform which normally isn't available till 100.   Ok so you have people getting dressed up in this stuff early on.  What is there to look forward to at 60+ then?  The complaints about lack of customization will start all over again.

And the being booted off if I step away from PC for 5 mins or so is really annoying.  It kept happening every after I turned off the auto-keep mode, like people suggested on forums.  Their ways of combating afkers annoys me as well.  If you were going to bring the game here, then don't muck with the mechanics of it.  Personally I tend to use tank heavy groups, so I dont do much at all in the way of afk leveling.  I don't see what the big problem is with other people going the afk level route though.

Honestly I love dueling people like that.  Because 90% of them don't know the first thing about the classes they picked.  They have no tactics, and pretty much all around flawed idea's about how things work.  If they want to AFK their characters up to 100, more power to them.  I couldn't care less.

Also the translation for most of the beginning NPC's is spotty at best.  Spelling errors that i've seen I can live with though.

I will give them credit for their choice of Font styles and sizes.  They are pretty damn good and easy on the eyes.  As well as ping times during peak hours.  No lag spikes or packet loss to speak of.   I don't know maybe it's because I've been playing the korean version for so long now, that I'm unhappy with the changes they've made.  They didn't sound too bad when I first heard them talk about them.  After actually playing around in the game, I can say at this point.  I really can't see me playing it.

I like the US version much more than the SG version.  SG version was very laggy and way too crowded, everywhere you go there's afkers, impossible to find an empty spot.  US version has no lag at all and no afkers.  Other positive tweaks include being able to aim your AOE's every time instead of being random and an auto-defend system.  I'm not sure why people are complaining about being able choose your costume?  So you rather look the same as everyone else?  You can always buy other costumes in the shop later...

The only problem I've come across is getting booted every hour or so (not from being afk).  Since its still beta, I guess the servers aren't 100% stable yet.  I don't see the anti-afk system to be a problem, it only takes 5 secs to log back in again and you'll be at the same spot.

Let me get this clear.  The way K2 decided to combat AFK'ers was to boot people after 5 minutes of inactivity?

No, its  just a bug but you can disable the auto kick function in the Options

This is a valid complaint.  I don't agree with it because costume pieces drop and can be purchased later, but I can 100% understand this point of view.

This is pretty much a flat out lie or you are having some strange connectivity issues.  I know there were server issues yesterday, but if you have "Lock Defend Mode" clicked off in the Game Options window you will no longer get afk booted and can afk to your hearts content.

K2 has said already they are working on it and it will be patched through Beta.  The tutorial text is 2397564837652973 times better than it was before the last patch so hopefully we start seeing more of that text which is not only real english it is interesting dialogue that actually explains what is going on in Granado Espada.

I think the reason Hanbitsoft allowed 2 versions of the game was so that those who couldn't get with the changes could still play an old school version.  However, I read in an interview (Ill look for the link) that Hak Kyu Kim was so happy with some of K2's changes he is planning on implenting them in the kGE version... soo....

Yet it doesn't work.  I did like I was told and disabled the auto-keep mode.  Still I was getting booted every 5 minutes.  Unless I moved my characters from spot to spot to spot every couple minutes.

Well you are really under no obligation to believe me.  But that doesn't change the fact that when I play it still happens.  The first thing people keep telling me, when I explain the disconnect is.   Uncheck that box it should fix it.  Nope, i've had the box unchecked since I first entered the game, because I read on the forums about it causing people to be booted.

And I sure as hell know it isn't my system or my connection causing it.  Reg cleaning, Defrag, Virus, Malware, Spyware, Drivers.  I do the whole 9 yards when it comes down to my system.  I've even went as far as reinstalling the game.  Because I originally thought it had something to do with the error I got when it was updating the after I ran it.  When the first installation was done.

Trust me it's not my connection.  Currently only SOTNW is giving me problems, but like I said.  As long as I move my group at least 2 steps every couple minutes it keeps playing fine.   Problem doesn't matter much currently anyway.  About to stop playing it at the moment.  Just don't have time to deal with a problematic game right now.   Because A) I know it's not my system causing the problem.  B) I know it's not my connection causing the problem.  C) Its beta so problems are to be expected.

Not like it's that much of a problem anyway.  It only happens when I get up to go grab some food or if I hear someone knocking at my door.  Because like I said I tend to favor melee classes and you know you can't leave them unattended for too long.

I guess what I am getting at is there is some problem SotNW is having with your system.  That maybe a coding issue, but either way it is very specific to you.  So the first question is 'what are you running', not 'there is a problem with the game'.

I think my statement was, you should let K2 know.  Because sometimes things just don't work for system builds, so they can recreate your system and try to figure out what is happening.
