Completely agree with you, its a good point. Blizzard did something well (whether you like the game or not) and now they seem to be the benchmark, but on subs rather than on gameplay. Seeing as everything anyone could write here is 99% subjective there's little chance for debate unless we avoid flaming or fanning a game based on our own opinion. We all like different things for differing reasons, beer, cars or whatever. The good thing is that we all enjoy gaming ... so lets enjoy what we do and sell the game based on why we like, rather than flaming another game or putting up made-up subs numbers etc.
This is a paradox though because this is also the reason the game has flaws. Blizzard doesn't care much about its end-game players. Why worry about the few that will quit when you have a plethora of people who either haven't hit level cap yet or who are just joining.
This game is a fad though, therefore, it too will pass.
Blizzard has been the measuring stick for strategy and "Diablo-clones" (Which is an actual word btw..) so I imagine Metzen and the hoodlums have been quite proud for a long time by now.
Then again I do consider WoW to be the Britney Spears of MMOs..
Or Coke...
I drink Jolt and listen to Tool :P
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
This or That popular show sucks!
Random pop culture success sucks!
Seems to be human nature to attempt to differentiate one's self from the masses. This often comes out by declaring that something a lot of people are happy with is inadequate. Some arguments as to the reasoning behind why something sucks are relayed better then others. Some people say 'This sucks because' whereas many people don't get past 'This sucks'.
I agree Blizzard must be proud. They made an extremely popular game and showed just how big online gaming can be. It should be noted that anything successful will be copied until it dies. I can see this being where a lot of hate comes from. Many people seem to agree that, for the most part, MMO innovation has stalled and it's easy to point a finger in Blizzard's direction due to their success and the potential impact that might have had on development trends.
For what it's worth, I don't think WoW sucks. I played WoW longer then I played any other MMO. I just got bored and I tend to think a lot of people are reaching that point. but that's just my opinion and there are no shortage of those.

WoW did not incorporate anything in its design that didn't come before in other games except one major difference in it's basic design. This difference was the way you progress through the game. WoW was the first MMO that didn't involve a huge time investment to get anywhere in the game. Games like EQ, UO and DAoC involved huge time sinks to grind out levels and WoW effectively did away with this so the casual gamer could log in for an hour or two from time to time and still feel like they were making progress. This is why WoW has a huge following because this aspect to game play was very appealing to people that would have never even considered playing a game like EQ, UO or DAoC.
Now a lot of games try to emulate this aspect of game play to cash in on this huge new population that WoW brought into the genre and who can blame them. MMO companies want to make money above all else so they would have to be totally stupid not to look at the success of WoW when planning their own games. Its this basic casual feel to most games since WoW that gets games compared to it and not any one feature or game play element. LotR Online is a very casual game which incorporates a lot of WoW-like features. While there is nothing basically wrong with this it is the main reason it is compared to WoW more than any other game.

This is kinda a Dead point. Yes Wow has 6Million Subscribers. There are some Korean MMO with 17Million Subscriptions.
Point is that comparing any MMO to any other MMO is assinine. Each and every MMO has its +'s and -'s. EQ set all the records back when it came out because it was one of the first. Now the MMO genre is huge, so obviously new MMO will soon top WoW's numbers in the US market. Its just a matter of time. It wont be a MMO thats built primarly around PvP or PvE, it will be one with a solid mix of both.
Blizzard games are always the best of their genre; Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and now WoW.
They know how to make games that people like to play, that s for sure.
