Warcraft is success thanks to Blizzards track record - something alot of publishers can take on board. It's about time MMO games took a different direction. I dont want to kill 100 bears to get some useless loot! Its just not fun.
The original skill system was probably the best system in any MMO and gave players the chance to be unique, much like in real life - we all have different skills in what we do. I remember taking a huge amount of pleasure mastering a skill back then and having someone else 'teach' you the master box.
Currently the industry seems to be going through a phase of 'dumbing down' games to appeal to a broader market. Yes, the costs involved are extremely high today, but if you build up a good brand and reputation, the customers WILL come - selling over 8 million copies of Warcraft is not a fluke.
Galaxies fell flat because so much was broken. A clear plan of the direction wasn't made and players took advantage of exploits. With such a powerful story, you would have thought the creative team at that time would have missions and quests coming out of their ears, but they didn't.
It was clear that in the game, you had players who WANTED to be 'Uncle Owen' as Julios put it, by crafting stuff to sell, taking pride in that part of the game - and you had those who wanted to be 'Luke Skywalker' who craved for adventure and combat.

the fact that people took pride in crafting and not to just sell it but to show it off as your own achievement.
you go to som eone and see he has a nice gun you dont ask " where did you get that gun?" you actualy ask "WHO made it?"
NGE made it so you have to ask "where did you get it?"
We have seen what putting a WoW spin on SWG via the NGE has done. No thanks. If I wanted a WoW type of game, I would have subscribed. Rest easy......I suspect a WoW space game (Starcraft?) will give you what you desire.
I would never have given SWG a second look if it launched NGE style. The very elements of what set the original SWG apart from other games were gutted, mutated and/or nerfed beyond reason.
I remember receiving a notice that Imperials were attacking a certain city and heading there. At some point in the battle, you would receive a notice that vader had entered the battle. Then, you just got to watch people get spanked for a while. ahh...good times...

The only star wars that I think would work in today's market is one set in a time NOT from the movies.
Either KOTOR style of way before, or way after the movies.
That setting will give developers the freedom to do what they need to do to make the game fun for everyone.

*Games on our site will be treated just as we treat people. Unsubstantiated comments about specific or general games will be penalized in nearly the same way attacks against people will. The exception is that you can say mean things about games provided you back it up with reasons.
Example: "Game X sucks." is not a legitimate comment. "Game X sucks, because..." is acceptable.

WoW's success has more to do with Blizzard's own fanbase and reputation and its attitude towards publishing.
I agree with others that it's actually something of a step back in MMO design. Blizz has created the ultimate 2nd Gen MMO, mainly by observing a lot of what others did and taking to heart the lessons learned.
Not that it's not without its own problems, but they're not glaring monstrous problems that cause people to clammor to reach the cancel button.
We've got a pseudo-WoW SW game right now, and it's not all that healthy.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

A Star Wars WoW? Hell no! A Star Wars with WoW aspects? Possibly. The Battlegrounds in WoW is a lot of fun. If something like that existed in SWG, it would be great, but not a complete CLONE of the WoW Battlegrounds. I used to think some sort of battleground existed in SWG. Sometimes I would fly from Moenia to Theed via shuttle and would get stuck in some sort of battleground in the middle of nowhere; I had to destroy a base. Did anyone ever see this bug? It was weird man LOL.
It would be nice indeed to play a Star Wars MMORPG that was based on the Extended Universe. An MMORPG based during the Mandalorian Wars be incredible. You have the Jedi, the Sith, and the Mandalorians all fighting it out. Nothing makes PvP more fun than having not two, but three factions battling it out. The time frame also makes for a good story.
I don't want to play World of Star Wars Galaxycraft, I want a complete, original game that defies the currently law of MMORPG's, and that's fun.

no, a live event was a 200+ man raid on Vader.

Yup.
The PvP zones now around select bases and Restuss are basically battlegrounds reimagined, and not demarcated with the towers and the ribbons. With something the original battlegrounds needed, near instant travel to get to them. The original battlegrounds were located well away from the cities, probably to distribute the server load, the catch was they were too far away to be easily reached on foot, the only way to get around when SWG launched, mounts and vehicles came months later. Also, they didn't work as they were intended, and it seems that the project to get them working got lost as the devs warmed up their nerfbats and worked to fix things that should have been working at launch. Like, oh, I don't know, Chef, and Smuggler, and ID...

yes and to add to that, they should have fixed teh GCW as well... having done that maybe the battlegrounds would be more popular.but all in all SWG NGE became almost an exact replica of WoW (that was based on EQ concepts) when i went to try out the NGE i told myself on many occations, if i want to play a game that looks like WoW, why not play the actual game of WoW
NGE stands for (N) world of (G)starwars galaxycraft (E)

how about a good game? not pew pew glow stix
Simplest answer to the OP.
NO.
Isn't it our own fault when it comes down to it.
Sure a ton of people canceled there accounts when the nge hit but i can think of a bunch of people and i mean a bunch that canceled 2 of their 3 or 4 accounts and still kept a live sub going.Or the large amount that re-sub every few months to check it out as they put it.Alot of the people that did stay away went over to wow like a herd of cattle and then we wonder why these companies dont listen to us.Sure we sent a message to soe but we needed to crush them when we had the chance and i believe we could have done that atleast as far as SWG goes.
You want something like swg again then stop givin in and buyin crappy games cause theres nothing else to play. These companies wont hear us if they dont have to listen simple as that.
joking aside, in an effort to not support SWG, but still support a pre-CU type of game, what options are there? Is Ryzom the only one really? I hear a lot of people mention EVE as well, but more so in that it is skill based (guessing here)?
I'll admit i went to WoW for any number of reasons that may or may not justify it in other people's eyes. In the end, I had fun, got bored, moved on (from WoW I mean). Now, I find myself back in SWG in the exact situation you describe, but hesitant to jump into a new game and invest in something that I am not sure I would enjoy.
So, a bit OT I am sure, but where have other vets gone to enjoy at least similar game mechanics to pre-CU SWG (besides emu)?
