Has anyone else watched the various Paul Barnett , (creative Director of WAR) pod casts and blogs and thought, "If this guys enthusisam is transferred into the game, I'll buy it"?

Lol, Paul is a legend.
From watching loads of his clips on youtube, i will deffinatly buy this game.

World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.
This guy is the manifestation of a fat, care-about-nothing, gamer. He is basically saying his game will be the incarnation of ego-centric gameplay, topped with cheesy coolness-items for everyone. After watching his videos and having read some FAQs about this game, I have the following picture in mind.
- community of 90% gank-fight-oriented egomaniacs
- game that does not respect or approach lore and myth but uses them solely as stereotypes
- game that does not feature true support classes
- game that does not feature traditional crafting
- community of 95% action-addicted kids
I don't know if it will be like that, but it appears so be the stage 2 game of WoW. More infantility, more action, more bash0ring...
No Sir, thank you...

EDIT: My most important game aspects are: Socializing, Roleplaying, Crafting, Questing
Errr, wait...
I DO like PvP, in a reasonable context. I liked EvE, I liked DaoCs PvP - a lot. PvP bound to a world with actual MMORPG character. WAR - judging from Barnetts blogs - is merely an online reason to "bash the living crap" out of each other... yay.
Gaining XP from PvP - will attract hundreds and hundreds of griefers and gankers. Is it fun for you to get your ass kicked while soloing a random quest-mob?
No, the critisim towards Barnetts view and the obvious announcments of Mythic concerning WAR is that this game does nada to prevent a kiddie-infested gank-o-rado to come true. PvP is great fun if it provides real threat, real challenge and real enemies in a reasonable context.
Apparently coding a game that parctically serves as a reason to provide a platform for endless, mindless, pointless bashing is... forgive me, just stupid...
I can already imagine the credo of this community "Lolz, u red Ill be pwnzering u in n0 time"

EDIT: AND, you cannot play a rogue. That would have been at least one way to evade mindless idiots who just attack everything on sight.
Which is absolutely _not_ true. The game might be about PvP, but they do protect other players.
First of all, odds are that a person thats killing questobjectives has killed more mobs than the ones attacking them. Winning and fighting makes you stronger in WAR, your attackers will most likely lose.
Second, high-lvl versus low-lvl should be massively discouraged because of the severe penalties you get(when attacking and when in low-lvl area's) versus lower lvl's. As the gap becomes larger, you also get stronger debuffs, lets say, WoW's res sickness as an example. This might actually bring your attacker to such a disadvantage, that you could win.
I'm a badly informed person, but I'm 100% sure these two facts have been promised.
And one of them is already in game.
And no rogues = no griefing.
I agree, I can't wait to "beat the snot out of people" so they "cry like girls". HEHEHE. Did you see the video where he talks about the Hammerer?
"What can they do? Can they use bows?"
"Take a look at the name and have a guess. HAMMERS!" Paul said.
"Axes?"
"Hammers!"
"What about..."
"HAMMERS!"

What was a pest on WoW PvP servers could be taken even further here, because you can actually win something by farming other players. And the WAR system is encouraging people to do this by allowing even level open PvP AND giving people "loot" and XP from """"defeating"""" other players.
I bet in these areas you will be attacked on sight by people that play this game only to bash people. And there won't be any penalties. In EvE or other games you get severe punishments for constantly killing people.
So oh, it's war, what do you think would happen if - in a real war - you would kill and loot everything that's in sight? Right, you would find yourself in a tiny cell in the military prison of your choice.

But I won't buy WAR because of Paul, but because of the superior RvR System and the Fun it'll be to play.
Jezus, I'm a carebear (prot war since 2005) but you even beat me :>
But it's also been said that the pvp/rvr zones will eventually outnumber the pve zones, hence, it's likely to end up in an RvR zone. His complaint isn't unlikely, I'd just say, not the game for him.
It's surely not the game for me AND I HAVE read into the game (true, PvP zones will greatly outnumber PvE zones).
All I wanted to say is, as this is a thread about Paul Barnett, his attitude towards his own game was the final fact that sealed my decision not to play this game.
And hell, I'm NOT a carebear, everyone who was hunting pirates in a pack or prototype equipped ships in lowsec space in EvE is far from carebearish. As I said, I LIKE PvP, what I don't like is the "Kill on sight killing is good everyone kill everyone now gogo" attitude that infests WoW for example. PvP should actually MEAN something in my book, not enabling a rabid, mindless crowd to run amok on anything thats not on their faction.
It's about picking your fights, about tactics, about working as a team, not about "stockcar crash challenge reloaded"...
I hope you get this *lol*

In the past, I've been much more interested in the PvE elements of games, but WAR definitely peaks my interest. From Mr. Barnett's blogs, I do get the sense that the PvP in this game looks like it will be "bound to a world with actual MMORPG character" as you eloquently put it. I like how this game is promising that PvP will have a direct impact on the world in which the game is played. If there is any truth to the marketing stuff Mythic is putting out there, it looks like WAR will very well lend itself to a lot more than "I'm gonna gank that orc who's picking flowers because I'm an elf."
I see your concerns over XP from PvP attracting mindless gankers and griefers, but I have to disagree. There will always be those types in any game, but I think XP from PvP can also attract players interested in PvP with a little more depth than what is currently offered. I'd much rather bring back 10 dwarf beards as a beginner quest that has an impact on the game world and the environment around me than gain XP bringing back 10 rat scrotums that at the end of the day, has zero impact on the world in which I'm playing. Wouldn't you?
As we mature as gamers and settle into being cranky bastards, of course we want more depth and content in our games. But there still is that adolescent part of us screaming, "smiting a big green monster with an axe is really cool" or "making that dwarf squeal as I bludgeon him with my mace" is neat in a sadistic, guilty pleasure, fantasy kind-of-way. From what I've read thus far, I think that WAR might be on the road towards doing a good job merging depth and lore with hack-and-slash.
Sure, as MMORPGers, I'd like to think we're a cerebral lot, especially when compared to fans of other types of videogames, but that doesn't mean that a PvP-heavy game is solely the realm of angry kids and reclusive basement dwellers taking out their misguided frustrations towards the world in a pixelated kindergarten class.
If you bothered to do any research you would know that they stated only some areas are PvP, and from what it sounds like you can't go in to lower tiers and PvP.
