Beta - Thoughts & Impressions?

Just received my beta key but am sitting at work at the moment and was wondering if anyone else has one and has had a try yet?

Don't really know much about this game and don't have much time free at the moment for gaming so was just wondering if it is worth downloading and trying or if i'd be better spending what little gaming time I have on my current MMO's?

EDIT: Whoops, thought I'd posted this in the sub forum for Sword Of The New World as I clicked on the forum link there but it took me to General instead of the game forum for that one.

Beta key to what game?  If you got into the beta of any game you should take the time to play it and report bugs, etc. or else you shouldn't have signed up in the first place.  There are a limited number of beta slots available and they should always go to the people that will actually use them to benefit the game.

Yes, and if I was psychic and had known at the time I applied that a little thing called 'real life' was going to cut down on the hours I have gaming, I may not have bothered.

Also, I don't care how limited spaces are for any game in beta, if I get a key and don't like the game i'm not going to carry on testing it as an unpaid bug finder when I could be playing an MMO I do like and the MMO companies know that.

Playing Sword of the New World now.

Graphically, it is very very pretty.

I have only played for about 5 hours now... and I am trying to keep an open mind...

but so far I don't dislike the control and options... I *HATE* the lack of control and lack of options.

You cannot even configure screen resolution or fullscreen/windowed in game (at least not that I have found) you have to exit game and set windowed ot full screen...

So... at this point... it looks like another beautiful to look at yet as hollow as a beer can game to me.

But I am TRYING to keep an open mind. I will play it until Thursday if I can make myself...

Are you seriously judging a game on the basis of how you set the resolution or fullscreen/windowed options?  There are a lot of games that work in this fashion.  Many of the games that do have these options ingame force you to restart the game.  What in the world does this have anything to do with the gameplay?

That's your rationale for saying it's as 'hollow as a beer can'?

I'm not even sure what options you are complaining about lacking.  I tested this game out on my old computer and it runs at 60fps.  This is possibly the most beautiful game that can run so smoothly on older computers.  On my year old computer, it's running at 1600x1200 at the highest settings and still giving me really smooth framerates.

    My first impression?

Full of AFK levelers, good luck finding a place to hunt without 500 AFK people encroaching and kill stealing.

otherwise would be a great game

You don't have to play this game...
If you disgust the way it is made why would you (force yourself to)enjoy playing it.

The way it is controlled suits the gaming style wery well.

The way they handle fullscreen, yeah a big gamebreaker.

Killstealing in this game, how? When you almost cant leave a room without the mobs you killed respawning and running after you.

AFK leveling will bring you less mobs to fight, and comparing to time spent it will take longer time. You just dont have to be as active. And as some attack from mabs will get you out of hold mode you have to keep one eye on it from time to time.
Dont know how K2's view will be on this in the end. But as it is now with using a hold position it is avaible for all to use. Seems like a fair and fresh idea (well if it is intended in the end to keep) for grinding through those trashmob killing quests, you have to spend the time either way .

Actively playing the game will get you more mobs in the end making timespent leveling and grinding less.

And in what I have seen theres bigger difference playing the game, combatwise, then it is in the first 20 or so levels.

Theres also a big difference in the what to call it, boss mode instances, then the general trashmob area.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

For me it's a game that keeps daring me to like it.  So few games out there are not fantasy, and even fewer are circa 1700s with gunpowder.  Graphically the game is amazing.  The idea of the game is fantastic, conquest of a new world.  It's got some interesting monsters and locales, plus, as I said, firearms!

Then the game does some absolutely horrible things.  The camera shake, for me, is a deal breaker.  I just can't watch the game with the screen bouncing almost non-stop.  The music which starts off wonderfully, crashes into this horrible techno junk that just doesn't fit the game.  The immersion is broken by the horrible voice acting which reminds me it's not *my* character that's down there it's three characters that are doing what I order them to do, more like an RTS game than an RPG.  I find no connection to the characters.  Then of course the characters you make are not the most powerful or most important characters in the game, but collectable NPC recruits are.  This is a problem of almost every game out there your character always plays second fiddle to the main story NPCs.

The gameplay I find just monotonous.  It seems to suffer from the typical play umpteen million hours to get to the fun stuff.  Such as sword and pistol dual wielding for figheters, or just kneeling stance for musketeers.

Yet, I look at the games later levels, the costuming, listen to some of the nice music tracks, and wish the game would stop taunting me so.

Not to mention the control system.  I think the keys to activate abilities could be moved to the number line or the F keys, open up wasd for movement of the lead character and you'd have a more intuitive system.  The point and click, while not a deal breaker for me, becomes aggravated by the shaking camera.  Others I'm sure don't have a problem with that, but I find it nearly impossible to target a specific creature and find myself using assault mode most of the time.  This further distances me from my characters.  Then again, as I said this is an RTS style game.

The NA version could spend a wee bit more time doing some *good* translations.  As of the moment, they are pretty poor.  Though in the NA version's defense the character costume options at the start are a dramatic improvement!

This might surprise you, but I didn't notice the camera shaking until I had already played a few days and I saw your earlier post.  I guess it fits the action for me.  But I can definitely see how it could be a problem for some people.

The music which starts off wonderfully, crashes into this horrible techno junk that just doesn't fit the game.

The population seems to be really divided about the music.  I've read about some people who love the music so much that it's their favorite game music period.  Personally, I can't stand it the music either.  I always shut it off.

I guess this is the side effect of having multiple toons.  I try to think of it as my FAMILY rather my TOON.  It doesn't bother me since for MMORPG's, I've always felt like I control my toon, rather than I am the toon.

Then of course the characters you make are not the most powerful or most important characters in the game, but collectable NPC recruits are.  This is a problem of almost every game out there your character always plays second fiddle to the main story NPCs.

The recruitable NPC's aren't necessarily more powerful.  They are more specialized.  If you want versatility, the stock characters have more options.  Also, I don't think there is a better elementalist, wizard or scout than the stock characters.

The gameplay I find just monotonous.  It seems to suffer from the typical play umpteen million hours to get to the fun stuff.  Such as sword and pistol dual wielding for figheters, or just kneeling stance for musketeers.

I don't see why this game would be any more monotonous than the typical slow paced autoattack grind of other MMO's.  I'm not sure I can say the additional stances is the fun stuff.  After the initial novelty of a new stance, it just becomes another aspect of your toons.  I'm looking forward to the PvP.

Not to mention the control system.  I think the keys to activate abilities could be moved to the number line or the F keys, open up wasd for movement of the lead character and you'd have a more intuitive system.

So instead of set hotkeys for each toon's abilities, you want hotkeys for only the lead character?  And be forced to switch the lead character every time you want to use another toon's special attack?  That seems really clumsy to me.   In any case, this is just more of the same ole WASD vs point&click debate.  I seriously don't think WASD would work at all.  Like many have said, the gameplay is more like a RTS.

    MMORPGRTS <--- Ill take it..

I work for a local gaming retailer and as soon as i recieved the preorder kits for this game i laughed thinking what could be worse that an MMO that has people dressing in top hats? However im a beta junkie and so of course i drop the minimum required cash to preorder it fully expecting to come back and cancel my preorder.

My first assumption of this being a waist of time couldnt have been more off. This is the first MMO iv been excited about since.. ... hmm.. forget this since.. this is the first MMO iv ever been excited about.

Now ill be the first to admit that this game is NOT for everyone. This isnt your typical MMO, it seems that you need to have a hardwired love for RTS's as well as MMOs in order to REALLY appreciate this game. As commented above about the "getting into your toon" its really not the same. i dont feel as linked to any one character as i did in games like EQ or even Ultima Online. However there is a serious level of RP ability with having three characters that you can actually speak through. In doing this you feel sort of like the borg mind.. (lol in reading this its dawning on me how much of a geek i really am.) now i realize thats sort of a weird thought but you just have to try it to understand lol. i saw this one famly(all 3 character controlled by the same guy) haveing a full out conversation with his own characters and also families around him. i couldnt stop laughing. So i try it myself. it felt identical to the feeling i had as a kid playing war with my GI joes. (Joe1-"Get em!" Joe2-"Its to late! Hes set off the bomb!!... RUN!"(Oh yea.. you know what im talking about))

    Sorry.. ... sidetracking.

Anyways. RTS Style Point and click(either individually tell each of your 3 toons to go some place or send em all to the same place at once) Personaly i love it for this type, wouldnt want to play it any other way. It really makes it so you can plan ahead for some huge mob that would of course take you on solo. Making strategy a huge part of the game if you trying to solo mobs above your level.

Point and click throws alot of people off just cause it is really different than most mmo's. However i grew up on Command and Conquer so this is nothing new to me.

I could keep going about this till the game launchs however work summons.

Anyone who Likes RTS games and MMOs both has got to give this game a try. Im Hooked! (Just remeber to look past this horrible english.. since beta launched iv already seen a HUGE fix in the grammer. Start day it took me 5 minutes to understand a paragraph. Now you just notice little qwarks  )

I think I have made my opinion pretty clear on these boards.  I love this game.  It is fun, fast paced and a new variation on a very old theme.  There are a lot of people who are knocking it, for reasons that are understandable.  But in the end, the only reason I play a game is to have fun.  And Sword is delivering in that department over and over again.

Honestly I think its a sound game, reminds me alot of Ragnarok at times expecially with the music and the loots. One thing I didn't care for was how you have to control 3 people. Its a feature they shouldn't have added in my opinion. Another thing is it seems to kick me out of the game after a certain time of being in one stance. But I'm not afk, I'm just killing in that stance... so I don't know what's up with that. Overall, with some tweeking it could be a sound game.

It's a recognized bug being beta and all.

The 5 minute timer on defensive mode doesn't reset when you clickmove only when you cast a spell/other skill.

(If you are up and remember to manually pick mode, hold or defensive, after you reached your destination you can turn it off in the setting. Lock mode or something it 's named. But now you will may have to keep looking that you are on the stance and it is not being canceled by mobs special attacks.)

In the end it is a fun game, me looking forward to the the PvP later on.

Yeah it is fresh in many ways, maybe something is brougth back from long forgotten shelves. But still gameplay is good, fastpaces, lots of action and fun. It is.

Noting after doing the quest. Al Quelt Moreza - Arcade, the first time killing the questboss Dilos Latem. Next time going into that map youre are done with the boss and actually moves forward into a new map. Just a little thing, not that new maybe, but still I'm done with that part of the dungeon so I won't face it again.

Controls are also quite nice once you understand them. The game is point and ckick because you control three toons. Hit Ctrl and click and you'll attack everything on the way to that point. Hit Ctrl and Shift then click and you'll loot everything to that point. Hitting Space will put you in attack mode. Hitting Ctrl and Space will have your toons loot the imediate area. Hitting Alt C will bring up chat. Alt Z will bring up map. Special attacks based on your stances can also be usedvia hot key. These command will work in group mode and when controling a single toon. Once you grasp this control is quite intuitive.

You cannot even configure screen resolution or fullscreen/windowed in game (at least not that I have found) you have to exit game and set windowed ot full screen...

You can change all these settings as far as resolution. The initial screen lets you select full screen and rez. not the options.

So... at this point... it looks like another beautiful to look at yet as hollow as a beer can game to me.

There are a tons of deeper elements in this game. IE. Weapons and armor can be enhanced and enchanted. Gaining rNPCs and their Stances is challenging. The other nice thing is that you can find a good spot and set your toons up to auto attack while you're afk. Great for busy people.

But I am TRYING to keep an open mind. I will play it until Thursday if I can make myself...

What??!!! Controling three toons is what sets this game apart. It gives it an RTS element that really adds alot of  variety to your game play.

Are you playing GE or SotNW? Because Sword just isnt that populated now. AFK people are in one spot, so that means they arent moving through your area. You can always ask someone to move if they intrude on your spawn area. Most people dont mind... it's better for them anyhow. Being able to go AFK in this game is a great way to alleviate grind fatigue. Also great for people like me with kids and family to spend time with.

This might surprise you, but I didn't notice the camera shaking until I had already played a few days and I saw your earlier post.  I guess it fits the action for me.  But I can definitely see how it could be a problem for some people.

Nah that doesn't surprise me,  I figure I'm pretty much in the minority on that one.  I agree it fits the action, my complaint is that it happens just too frequently for me, to the point of physical discomfort.  If the camera shake was reserved for actions by my characters only, and only for really big hits (like huge AOEs and the sort) it probably wouldn't be a problem.  I do wish there was an option to turn it off, that would help me immensely.

The population seems to be really divided about the music.  I've read about some people who love the music so much that it's their favorite game music period.  Personally, I can't stand it the music either.  I always shut it off.

In my reading I think the population is divided on whether or not they like the music but seem to agree that it generally doesn't fit the game.  The techno tracks at least.  I think the period pieces are wonderful.  However, like you I just turn off the music.  I'm not sure there is a game out there yet that has music I can listen to at length.

I guess this is the side effect of having multiple toons.  I try to think of it as my FAMILY rather my TOON.  It doesn't bother me since for MMORPG's, I've always felt like I control my toon, rather than I am the toon.

I did try that when I first played.  I suppose since I play a lot of pen and paper RPGs and pretty much exclusively GM them, I'm hoping an MMORPG will help me get the character play time that I'm wanting.  Yeah yeah that's a long shot to say the least!  However, the game still felt very distant to me.  However, Tarian noted speaking specifically as individual characters some roleplaying going on that way.  I'll have to look into that and see how it feels.

The recruitable NPC's aren't necessarily more powerful.  They are more specialized.  If you want versatility, the stock characters have more options.  Also, I don't think there is a better elementalist, wizard or scout than the stock characters.

My impression is that there are certain key recruitable NPCs that a family just "has to have".  Anyway this is a minor point to me and really just a note on how PCs always seem to end up playing second fiddle to the NPCs.  This would not have been a deal breaker for me at all since it abounds in every MMORPG I've seen to date.

For the most part I agree that all MMOs roughly the same.  However, certain games such as Guild Wars and EQ2 do have (comparatively) a lot for the characters to do in combat.  Guild Wars has the "build your deck" concept of character design with skills.  EQ2 a character can be doing quite a bit, assassins, illusionists, troubadors and dirges, and inquisitors spring to mind.  Of course how much to do is rather dependent on the character class in that game.  SotNW, on the other hand, I'm pushing 20 levels with my little threesome and all I have to do (really can do) is hit fireball every once in a while.  There's no real need to position characters, there's no real skills to bother using.  Plus with the camera shake issue (for me) I can't even choose with monster to attack, just use assault movement to get anywhere.  The game feels very automatic to me, more so than the two games I currently play (GW and EQ2).

My apologies, I wasn't clear on this point.  I think the hotkeys could have been set up as a single bar across the keyboard.  The function keys would have been an excellent set to use.  Granted that assumes one or two fewer hotkeys per character if the function key bar was used.  However, such a set up would have allowed for the more intuitive WASD movement system.  This would have made entry into the game somewhat more accessible for more people, just judging based on the number of posts on various forums about WASD movement.  I agree this is more of an RTS and games like Dungeon Siege also work just fine with point and click movement.  I don't have a serious issue with point and click as I expect it from RTS games.

As I said, in general I thin SotNW is a great game in a great setting with beautiful graphics.  It's a game I really want to enjoy.  The deal breaker for me is the camera shake, which just seems to compound with lots of little problem.  Those little problems taken on their own would not be a big deal but it does add up for me.

I think it's great that people are enjoying this game as it shows there are other themes and settings that players are willing to explore, which should be encouraging to game makers.

If only I could turn off camera shake!

Now I haven't gotten very far in this game but what's the point of grouping up in a game where you already have 2 group members. Honestly, it kinda feels like a console game cause you're controlling 3 people.

Its a feature they shouldn't have added in my opinion. Another thing is it seems to kick me out of the game after a certain time of being in one stance. But I'm not afk, I'm just killing in that stance... so I don't know what's up with that. Overall, with some tweeking it could be a sound game.
What??!!! Controling three toons is what sets this game apart. It gives it an RTS element that really adds alot of  variety to your game play. Its something I don't care for. If I wanted to play a RTS I would go play one...

Now I haven't gotten very far in this game but what's the point of grouping up in a game where you already have 2 group members. Honestly, it kinda feels like a console game cause you're controlling 3 people.

Because plain and simply put.  Even with 3 characters there are plenty of things in game that you just can't beat without a Squad.   My group is 89 about to hit 90 and there are mini-bosses in Jaq Prison that even I won't go near because they can pretty much down my group, by doing more damage then my scout can heal for.  Yet if I was grouped with another family who also had a scout.  That would be two scouts healing my tanker and the mob would be downable.

Not even going to go into how silly it would be to attack the raid bosses with a single family.

Squads are also good if you are apart of a faction.  They are useful for helping out new faction members power level their characters.  The tricks I could make a guide about on how to power characters using a squad from anywhere from 52 to 80 would be quite interesting.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

On my year old computer, it's running at 1600x1200 at the highest settings and still giving me really smooth framerates. i don't know what sort of games that you've been playing pal, but most high quality games have those options ingame and the don't require you to restart the game.

i haven't even been able to play Sword of the New World yet, but i checked out the character creation after i got it downloaded, and i'm already not impressed with it. character creation is a joke, zero ability to customize my characters looks--face/body, and apparently the only customization i can do is decide between about a dozen or so outfits....

that is completely lame, i do not want to look like everyone else, MMORPG's have been out for how long and we're still having to deal with crappy character creation?! wtf. i want a game with good character creation like when i played Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes/Villians has a pretty decent character creation also--unfourtunately the graphics suck in my opinion.
