Well I honestly tried eve and found it to be terrible!!!
I want to fly wherever I want and have my skill as a pilot factor in the game... basically you get a ship... autopilot to an asteroid... mine it... fly back to a base and sell ur ore... then fly out, mine, dock sell... then eventually get pwned by someone you didnt even see... and lose everything you had!!! Great... I found the playerbase to be ignorant and unhelpful and very hard to engage with.
I prefer more friendly playerbases like Star Sonata's.

The thing about EVE is youc an't just just into any ship :P Your meant to play mmorpgs for years, thats the way they're built and it's the same as anyother gaem you can't wear the best gear when your level 1. EVE doesn't have levels so you move at your own pace and partly EVE's slow pace which is there because your not meant to rush through the game.
Also many new players come into the game going out and just mining however theres sooo much more to do, i started again this month and i havn't mined once. If you play through the tutorial you would have done agent missions and gotten a fre kestrel etc etc.
The community however in many noob local chats and noob corps is quite bad i must admit, it never used to be like that back in the day but sooo many new players coming in your going to get some dickheads in the game. So you'd get the same in WOW or anyother mmorpg however in EVE all the noobs generally start in the same corp and same area as they all go Cal and fighter spec
My tip for EVE as a noob is learn destroyers and salvaging and fast as possible because it earns you SOOOOOOO MUCH MONEY.

I went thru the tutorial when the game first released with the 2 week trial. Played everyday for aprox 2 hrs for 2 weeks and my experience was the same as OPs. The chat was lacking to say the least. Would be up to 5 minutes at times to get any response at all. If I did get a response it was a short 4-5 word answer that made no sense to me and left me even more confused.
As far as "getting into a Corp" to make it more enjoyable....I repeatedly sought out getting into one with absolutely no positive response or no discussion at all when someone did respond other than "yeah find a good Corp and you life will improve alot"...
Needless to say when the 2 week trial exoiered so did I from any interest in EVE Online. After reading many posts like this one and others from those that played it far longer than I did and left for the same reasons I will not be heading back into SPACE anytime soon if at all...
Just my 2cents
If you think the pilot system has no skill or removes control from the player somehow... you just havnt played it at a level that will teach you otherwise.
When I first started playing I thought exactly the same thing. I now appreciate how much skill is involved in getting your ship to do joystick like manuvers using the interface as it is. Its a highly skilled system and combat can often have little to do with SP and ship grunt.

Have A Nice Day.
That line tells me you arent trying hard enough or simply didnt bother to look at the rookie channel. This is one of the few games where vets take time of their day to give players tips and advice. I myself have done it and not to mention there is always a GM on that channel answering quesntion realtime 24/7.
The game isnt for everyone, afteral its a niche game. The skill system it has is one of the more unique ones out there and ofc not everyone is gonna like it. The idea that You lose everything you worked for is one of the reasons people play this game for. PvP with no risk get bland after a while, PvP where you put something on the line is exiciting everytime. Another thing is that isk isnt that hard to make. You dont need to mine for hours on end either. I for one hate mining, i dont like missions too much either. But there are complexes in game and ofc my fav way to make isk is to pvp and loot the enemy's can.
Sry this game wasnt to your liking, but as ive said its not for everyone. Hope you find something you can enjoy.
Strap up those boots soldier and take it like a man or move on to one of the 132453242 games out there that make you feel like a god in 10 minutes after logging in.
Eve is not for the faint of heart or for people who have no patience.
The intricacies of eve combat arent found in how well you can point and click, its more cerebral than that and therefore not for everyone.
Your deluding yourself if you think rock/paper/scissors is complicated....Eve combat does have some things that does take getting use to (stuff in market is hard to find or how to figure out what names are things called to buy and what skills you need to use those items), but the overall the combat system and Eve Online in general isn't that complicated. It does take a little bit of time to learn all the little intricacies ( they throw a book mark button in a wierd space in the UI for instance), but nevertheless the game is relatively simplistic and boring....
The combat system also isn't that complicative. Lets take a walk thru some of what Eve really is about....
You got like 4 different damage types....and 2 reasonable ways to defend against those damage types....you can boost your armor or shields, and different ships have different bonuses, so your presdisposed based on your ship pretty much what you do, gallente ships are better for armor defense, and caldari ships are better at shield defenses generally.....
all ships have shield, hull, and armor, but to buff up one type(shield booster to double your shield points, etc) and then put a repairer on that type, maybe a regener on that type also so it regens faster,.
For PvP you want a fast ship, the faster the better, why most PvPers prefer speed as a defense, figuring if you cannot hit them, then you cannot beat them, they use transversal to run around you....they often still use one of the above regen, repair, and/or boosting of either shield or armor....minmater have the fastest ships, amarr is just a tad slower....
basically throw what you have skills for on a ship, and fight stuff....its not that complicated....you can spend some time thinking about all the different ramifications to the various things, and its often hard to fit as much as you want on a ship because you don't have the electronics skill or engineering skill to bump up the CPU or whatever the other name of engineering skill gives...
I think the FONT often makes you think more is happening then it is, its pretty small.....
If your a vet, and you think the game is very complicative, its not....
regarding team tactics....lets walk thru some of those things.......basically you get a small squadron, say like 10 ships, and of those 10 ships you want a tackler, so they stop a ship from moving, and/or warping out, then since its moving so slow, its easier to get transversal on it, meanwhile the other 9 ships are blowing away the target of the one tackled.....
why you want the 9 to target one ship is to blow it away as fast as possible, so they are doing overall less damage to you, the faster you blow away the enemy by all targeting the same ship, the less damage you have being done to your squadron or side...
If the 9 are wasting shots, then you want another tackler, and divide it more so, say 4 targeting one ship and a tackler, although if they aren't blowing the ship away fast, its not worth it, because its getting too many shots back at you....,and your slowing down your destruction of the enemy....
besides a tackler you have another ECM ship, and another ship that is ECCM, one ship lowers the ability of ships to hit targets, the other raises the ability.....basically they cancel each other out if they are equal skill/equal ships......
besides all this, there is also another ship that can bump up shields or armor of other ships, and this is another type of ship that takes special training to do just this particular type, which can also help keep ships in trouble surviving longer against the above standard tactics I mentioned of alpha striking.....
That pretty much covers most of the basics, there is some interesting things with different types of sizes of ships, basically the bigger the ship the more expensive, if you have more numbers, flying smaller ships vs bigger ships can help mitigate the cost of battle, while still doing considerable damage, you get 10 frigates, and their combined might can take down a battleship.....(especially if the battleship isn't prepared to fight smaller ships).......
oh, there is a thing with different missiles types, as they get bigger they do more damage but only against the bigger types of ships...a heavy missile does about the samage damage as a normal missile against frigates ( or very slightly more)....the same goes pretty much for rail guns, or other types of weapons.....so often if the bigger ship does hit, it won't be utter destruction to the frigate, although it will hurt more than fighting a frigate generally....
So, in a little description I above pretty much described most of the details of combat, and various tactics used, and if it was truly so involved that it was truly baffling, it would take pages and pages, chapters to describe.....its not that hard to understand.....its a game afterall, and people figure out what they are doing relatively quickly....
My personal belief is that the tutorial is actually a waste of time, and your better off learning all the little details on your own.......the tutorial hides parts ot the UI from you(seriously), so you cannot learn those on your own unless you stop the tutorial, or get to that part of the tutorial....Also if you truly cannot figure something out, you can go to the tutorial for the particular thing you cannot figure out....like for manufacturing stuff off blueprints....

The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
So much for a simple explanation eh?
I can describe most other MMO's in 4 words: Tank, DPS, Healing, Mezzing.
There's no keeping track of a moving target in most other MMO's. There's 'I'm in range' or 'I'm not in range'.
You've also left out a lot of things as well. There's 2 kinds of Shield tanks, passive and active and there are different ways to armor tank as well and each of them have their strengths and weaknesses. All of this is moot however if every person in the gang doesn't do what they are supposed to, and that is where the player skill comes in.
Maybe if you actually had some you'd have experienced battles where you are jumping into larger forces and wiping the floor with them.
This isn't a flame. Unlike some of the responses above I'm going to try to give you a bit of constructive criticsm here:
1) Do the tutorial. I know it's somewhat boring but if you'd actually bothered to do the tutorial you'd have learned about:
Why didn't you do the tutorial? Every person who has ever played EVE will tell you that, while it's boring, doing (and paying attention) the tutorial is imperative to getting a proper glimpse of what EVE has to offer.
And the tutorial barely scratches the surface. No EVE isn't a easy game to get into. It doesn't carve a path out for you as most other traditional MMO's do. EVE gives you a toolbox to work with. What you do with the tools in it is entirely up to you. It's not a game that appeals to the masses. It appeals to those who enjoy the sandbox type of gameplay that it offers. If you don't enjoy it that is fine.
"A ship-of-war is the best ambassador." - Oliver Cromwell
Its a hard game to get into. EVE is a game where you need to find the fun, and not expect the fun to come to you (like WoW). Theres a lot more stress on joining a corporation and getting involved with teamwork. If you find a good corp, Eve can be a great game for you. If you just fly around on your own you'll get bored quick.

And I'm not like 'most people'. I fly Recons & Covert Ops almost exclusively. I get huge satisfaction & fun from sneaking through an enemy blockade, gathering vital intel for my alliance mates & disrupting our enemies' plans.
To warp your gang straight into the middle of an invading force and then watch your gang take them to pieces gives an amazing sense of satisfaction.
As long as I can afford to replace my ships when they go pop & improve my skills, I don't care how much money I have. As for capital ships, no thanks! Like battleships only worse- big slow lumbering things. No fun at all.
Fun ftw!
If he really wants to try to get to grips and understand the game then I recomend trying the game once more now. Apparently with Revelations II there is a new more easy to follow tutorial so it doesn't drag on as much as the old one. Also it should spoon feed you more of the game or something but I haven't created anouther trial account to try it out so I wouldn't know
Jade Dragon, your right that the OP is just trying to plug Star Sonatta.....
I did play thru the tutorial, because I was under the delusion that t his game is complicated....as I stated the tutorial actually slows down the learning curve.......
you know, I could of used the words tank, healer, etc and few other things, but I didn't.....so even those who didn't know anything about the game could. I was only talking about combat....of course I know there is mining and other things.......none of these other things are complicated either.......with regards to passive and active tanking, and armor and shield, if you read what I said, I did actually cover it without using those words.....active tanking is using shield boosters that heal your shield, or armor repairers....passive tanks bump up their shield/armor number so its high, and then use regeners so their chosen type of tank passively regens....the problem with passive is that it can only handle so much damage all at once....its constantly regening the same amount, the active tank does require more energy but can better handle alot of damage all at once....
City of heroes-scrappers regen vs invuln are similiar to passive and active tanking in Eve, except that once you pick your city of hero char your stuck with him unless you reroll him, and alt-ism is easy to do in city of heroes because making a char is so much fun....its fun making new costumes....
College is hard, most topics in college are complicated.....
Eve Online isn't complicated, and that is why people with 90 IQ can play this game....you only need a 5th grade education or be the age of 12 to effectively play this game........
another way to look at what I said is that this game is for anyone, its not so complicated that your average computer user couldn't play it and figure it out...
your actual keypresses do not vary that much from most mmorpgs, your still just pressing a few buttons and moving your mouse a little bit.....your pressing F1 thru F9 or 1 thru 8 to activate your weapons....just like you do in wow, EQ, etc......most other mmorpgs....
ratting/missioning is similiar to most mmorpgs, blow stuff up, collect the dropped stuff.....they did add salvaging which is another boring thing you can do after missioning/ratting, but it is just as boring as mining....because its so lucrative its hard not to do this....a mission award can be 50 or 100 K, but the salvaging could be twice that or more easily for the same mission.......it is very time consuming....
a good yard stick for how difficult something is -> can your average joe shmoe do it......most people cannot do professional sports, most people do not have their doctorates in anything....
How many people cannot figure out Eve Online? If it was truly as complicated as people try to state that it is, most couldn't figure it out, it would take more than several paragraphs to go into exact details on how to do combat......
there is a learning curve with the lingo of Eve, like most mmorpgs there is a definitive lingo, and if your refer to your player group as a guild, your asking for redicule......
There is a learning curve to Eve Online, it does take time to learn the UI and learn where stuff is located in game.....this game isn't as simplistic as tic tac toe or checkers.....

The community for this game is OUTSTANDING. I would go as far as saying it's the game's biggest selling point. However, this is only the case if you take the time to look for a good corporation (guild), if you do not do this, then yes, I can see how your game experience would be quite dreadful.
