    The ability to jump...................

It has ruined more games than you can possibly know. Bunny hopping is an epidemic in every FPS shooter on the market along with every MMO that allows it. As if people would jump around like that during an actual real fight. it is ridiculous and as far as I am concerned completely unnecessary. SWG had great PVP combat and didnt have vertical jumping.

I hope that more and more games remove this stupid tactic.

Every game has its fair share of grind but this game seems to be taking a step in the right direction away from it.

I understand the feeling. Bunny hopping is really annoying, however, for some reason loosing the vertical movement makes me feel constrained. I think that a fatigue system like in BF2 wouldn't be so bad. (more powerful probably, bunnyhopping was still possible in BF2)

Gotta agree with starman on this one!  Its ridiculous...

I like the way planetside dealt with it...  In planetside when you jump your cross hair opens up wide making your bullets miss far more often.

Of course, thats a first person shooter, but the same can be done with RPGs, just make your shots less likely to hit if the player has just jumped or is still jumping.

Also planetside made jumping drain stamina which encouraged players not to hop all over the place (especially because most have a sprinting implant that lets them run faster via stamina).

Oh, and in Planetside you usually have some different entertaining things to do besides stand around waiting for people like in many mmorpgs...

well you could i guess but it wouldnt be very ineffective since you have to be stationary when performing combos

But...but...if you remove jumping, then all my mindless monotous spamming of the spacebar will be for not!

I've had a jumping addiction in every game I've played since Morrowind (where jumping around let you skill up).  Now I jump everywhere I go in any game that has jumping.

    It's a curse really.

Why not just disable the ability to jump in combat?

I'm thinking that since your attacks hit only what they actually go through and if you're not in the range of the swing then you don't get hit, there will be a lot of jumping and circle strafing since that will get you out of the swing area.  Especially if there's inclined terrain.  If you're higher up on the hill, you just jump and you avoid being hit.

This wouldn't help you out if you were fighting, but it would if you were running.

And you can swing while moving, so I'm thinking circle strafing and circling targets will be seen a whole lot, since that can get you out of the way of the swing as well.

EDIT: This is the reason I think the combat system will be flawed unless they pay attention to what people "will" do, not just what they "intend" for people to do.

The videos we've seen are of developers showing off the game, so they're not doing anything that isn't intended.  When in the hands of actual players, they find every exploit they possibly can.

And with the high-end graphics, if the lag ever gets bad, you're liable to not even be swinging the right direction if the person is running around you and you're lagging.

Jumping to try and prevent yourself from being hit by bullets and arrows though, that seems pretty silly to me too    I reckon it doesnt work because it is meant to work, it just works because of latency issues...

Like I was talking about planetside before...  Jumping during combat isnt an issue in planetside since it messes up your cone of fire so much and it costs stanima points...  But instead enemies always run back and forth as they attack, which works along the same lines, causing issues with lag, making the players very difficult to hit.

    What I'm saying is,

some people jump during combat to exploit lag in games

some people jump other times because they are bored in games

So which is bad?  I dont really love people who jump because they are bored and full of energy, but I dont really think its a big problem, to me its just the ones that try to take advantage of the jump key during combat.

This thread has made my day.  Why not take out the ability to move in combat too!  All that circle strafing and snare kiting makes me a sad panda.  Rock 'em Sock 'em Conan all the way!

Shouldn't be too hard to simply have jumping affect your combat stats... Jump = Ability to block way down, ability to hit target way down and once you land, you can't move right into combat you have to actually land and rebound from the jump, giving the grounded opponent just enough time to take your damn bunny hoppin head off.

idk why but i really just cant get into a 3d game where you cant jump, just makes me feel restricted, doesnt let me satisfy those urges i get like

"ooo lets go jump in that stream"

"zomg i need to get on top of that huge building somehow"

"heh i wonder how far up that tree i could get"

yanno i cant get into games without it

I used to feel the same way about jumping but I played FFXI and Gears of War and enjoyed them both immensely and neither of them have the ability to jump.  It is possible to make a great game without jumping and losing immersion.  It just has to be done right.  If it makes you feel constrained, then think about the reality of the situation.  Jumping like crazy in combat is neither plausible or effective.  You want the reality of jumping but not the reality of it being an incredibly stupid thing to do in hand to hand combat.  Fatigue is a good solution I suppose.  That would allow for jumping but not an excessive amount.  I can get behind that.

[Here's a list of all the games I've played and/or my computer specs to show how much more seasoned or technologically advanced I am than you.]

I liken the situation to the full use of jedi powers shown in the new movies (to a lesser extent) and in the Clone Wars series (far, far better) or good martial arts, evn Matrix-type combat.

If you take the skills and abilities of a "hero" type, there is no reason why they cannot use a better than normal strength and agility to combine movement around a target as both an offensive and defensive ability to overcome an opponent.

Just because you personally can't do it doesn't mean that it is immersion-breaking when considered in the proper context.

    Some anti-bunny hoping suggestions....

    1. Disable jumping during combat (the easy way out)

    2.  Have a cooldown to all attacks and abilities after jumping ( I'm thinking 2 second cooldown for all combat abilities should be enough to discourage,  maybe even just 1 second would do)

    3. Maybe jumping heights more realistic.  Seriously, not many people have even a 2 foot vertical jump. Seems like in most games characters have a 4 foot vertical.  Now add in armor and weapons and realistically you would be lucky to have a 12 inch vertical jump.  Someone jumping less than a foot high would still be pretty easy to hit. (and btw,  vertical jump is not determined by how high you can jump AND lift your feet/bend knees.  In other words just because you can jump over a 2 foot object doesn't mean you have a 2 foot vertical.)

    4.  Although I doubt any game would take this approach.... Make jumping have a delay and cancel all other actions before and after jump.  It would work something like this.  You press jump button, your character pauses and can't perfrorm any other actions for 1 second, character jumps after 1 second delay, character can resume actions 1 second AFTER jumping.  You shouldnt need to to jump unless you are jumping over something.  This might make it hard to jump over stuff so I guess make so jumping has to be a running jump,  the 1 second delay before jump could be your character takeing 1 or 2 strides before jump.   No one sane runs around jumping like an idiot for no apparent reason or while in combat in real life or heck...  even in fantasy (save for Yoda,  but he is little and green so spam hoping should work for him).  I know nothing about programming or game design so I don't know if this approach would be worth it., but I do know game play and bunny hoping in combat must die right here, right now, with this game.  For the love of God!

Suggestion 4 may be a bit much, but I see no reason why they couldn't implement something along the lines of 1,2 or 3.

I also have ideas about the circle strafing.  Circle strafing like in WoW is pretty dumb too.  Its just as rediculous as the jumping.  But lateral movement IS important in combat, espcially in melee combat ,and with the combat system in AoC,  lateral movement should be an option during combat just not to the extent of how most games play.  BUT, I'm tired and its bed time so I'm not going to post those ideas now.  Maybe tommorrow..... and I'm too tired/lazy to spell/grammar check right now so excuse me for any wierd sentences that make no sense.

Annoying!! One of my main reasons for leaving my first WOW guild the first 3months of WOW. This kid would jump around you on screen in everything we did, he just jumped jumped jumped and never stoped. After telling him to calm the F down he continued, it is really bad to jump in MMORPG's because it takes the immersion out and besides that you can clearly tell that the person on the other end is an idiot for annoying people and not respecting them when they say stop jumping.
  • Thunder_HeadThunder_Head Member Posts: 304
I have no problem with bunny hopping and the likes when you do PVP. But taking the jump function away because some people feel immersion is destroyed by it is senseless.
  • TibuTibu Member Posts: 23
I never knew whining could reach this level... Of all the things you could ask for betterment (word?) in an MMORPG; you ask for the removal of jumping and running in circles

Seriously can you imagine WoW without jumping? What would you possibly do to pass time between BG queues? /jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump/jump

i think i heard something about them at least planning on having a sort of jumping cooldown system so that bunny hoping is avoided. I really hope its not like WoW, the pvp system with the hopping really worsened the game for me.

Jumping wont help you in combat, in fact it would likely get you killed since you aren't doing anything productive ;p But you can jump
