Like everyone said wow was always gear dependant, although some classes are more dependant on gear than others. Rogues arent really dependant on their gear whereas a warrior needs to have really great gear to do anything.
However, 99% players doesn't realize that as they fall in love with the game.
If 200k players are happy with how the gear-dependancy is done, I would be extremely surprised. The overwhelming majority of WoW players come to play a game that was like Diablo...not like EQ!
Someone might argue that Diablo was gear-dependant or not, it depend on many thing. But the gear acquisition methods in Diablo is something the players knows and love if they care about gear acquisition anyway, while in WoW, they where...surprised.
Blizzard just ruins a LOT of it fanbase with WoW, BC aggravates it. But like SoE, they think it is a bright move and that everything is perfect, that pink-flying-elephants is a good idea and won't pooh on them...

Thats why I can't wait for POTBS and a couple other titles where gear is not the priority but the minority.
What makes you think POTBS is not "gear" centric?
The whole point of the game is to keep building bigger and better ships. It may not be swords and armor, but it seems like the same basic concept to me.
Every MMO is going to have some form of mechanism for improving your character, whether it be levelling or gear or both. Otherwise, you might as well just play a multiplayer FPS or something.

WoW was always a gear-dependant game, why would there be item qualities then? Yeah what is the purpose of dungeons and raids other than blue quality or higher items. We're not entering the Black Temple other than for the Tier 6 raid set.
this game is majorly gear dependentm, i need to get new speed boost, graphics cardsd, and ram upgrades and my comp like 8months old but i very good condtion

You obviously do not know anything about POTBS and gear dependancy, go study up on POTBS then come back here and talk. What you said made no sense.
Gear dependency also allows developers to rest on their laurels rather than develop new content as frequently as they should. They can milk several months' worth of runs out of the same instance rather than worry about constantly creating new content for players to explore.
Think about it. If you were in a raiding guild, how many times did you repeatedly run MC/BWL/AQ etc. for some Tier XXX gear? Then ask yourself how many times you ran the instance after it stopped being fun? Would you have ran the same darn instance over and over and over again if you didn't have that carrot of Tier XXX armor dangling over your head? I'd imagine for most there is a huge discrepancy between the number of times you ran the instance versus how many times it was fun for you...unless you have OCD in which case you may have had a blast.
I think it depends on the server at first. If you are pve it's far less dependent. But for pvp it totally is. The better the armor and weps the more powerful you are as compared to someone else at the same level and with same spec. Weapons are a huge deal with your dps. dps can decide a pvp match almost instantly. Armor also in many cases. If someones got purple shoulders there gonna surpass someone with green shoulders. Also If they've got a purple wep and armor they are gonna own there opponent with the increases to strength, stamina, agility, etc. So yes in some ways depending on server type WoW is definitely gear dependent.
Most games are gear dependant its becoming the way of the MMO which is sad i think. Grind, Grind, Grind Hit max level, Grind, Grind, Grind. Its a way to keep people playing keep everyone busy etc..
Anymore for me its not if a game is gear dependent but how many complete ****tards do I have to put up with to get gear. With WoW the morons massively outweighed the number of people with brains.

Yea i agree with everyone WoW is,and has always been gear dependent.
With the new expansion TBC lvl 65 greens are really good and cant beat a lvl 60 with tier 2.
Even so...a lvl 50 with full greens can die to a lvl 40 with enchants and blues(depending on class)
This is what we call a twink
