"Next-Gen" MMORPGs... will they ever get here?

To answer the OP, depends on what you're looking for. IMO, next-gen currently refers to graphics, and they are here. Go look at some screens of EQ or UO, and then the latest MMORPGs to see the difference. That's the only thing next gen about the current releases. Plus DX10 will soon be standard, and we should see some graphics leaps there as well.

Adding twitch to MMORPGs? Nothing next gen about that IMO, that just leads to bigger and better First Person Shooter games, which we already have. Nothing wrong with First Person Shooter Games, I like to play 'em too, but they aren't next gen.

Free For All Player vs Player? Nothing next gen about that. We've been there, done that (anyone remember UO pre-trammel) and figured out that most players don't like it.

The next generation of games I'm looking for will add dynamics to the game world. That's really the only thing I see missing from the current MMORPGs.

I don't know if that's hard to do, or the developers think it's to risky, or maybe players actually don't like a dynamic world, but that's what I'd like to see in the next gen of games.

omg so we are arguing the meaning of words again.  Why does this happen so much here at mmorpg.com.

But ladyattis you obviously have something to say.  You are complaining that what goes on between objects in OOP is not currently handled adequately.  That mimicking real world physics with member functions is clumsy and too restrictive (ie. if it isn't specifically coded for on a per-class basis, it doesn't happen).  If i am on the right track then when do you suggest as a replacement for OOP, or do you suggest a combination with something else?  I will not pretend to be a professional coder so please keep it light if possible.

Depends on how you want to view MMO generations.

An oversimplified generalized view :. . . .  I have seen impovements in size, depth, graphics, AI,  then they got dumbed down. Quests that almost spell it out for you step by step and a marker on the map so you don't get lost. What is the next generation to be???  Click npc, accept quest, sit back as game guides your character to the next npc to complete the quest for you??    I say Take away the mini maps put a crude compass in its place.  Have the NPC's give you sketchy info on the quest s. Have a large selection of statsand attributes to have to decide to pick from and have skills gained by actually using and learning them. Have dozens of classes of weapons to choose from and your choice in stats and attributes affecting them all differently.

But that is too much work!  The game community has voted that out by flooding the  dumbed down games and shunning games that make you think .  Games feel like they are just march of the clones. Everyone has the same ability based on set numbers and the only difference in play is now between the speed of thier clicking the right icons or stabbing the right buttons or even dumber yet!!  Selecting the right macro so your grouped moves play for you.

Yes thats it!  Lets keep getting dumber and dumber until you sit back in your chair and watch it like a movie.

Lets go back to our roots and bring forth the diffculty from MUD's and single player games like Arena and Daggerfall and the likes.

Just my own feelings but i like to share them with others.

Its all about Body Check Online.  The only Hockey based MMO.  They did a really ingenious job at it.  Note this is a Korean Developer.  On character design there is a huge black guy; a medium sized yet bigger then WoW characters German Guy; and a hot hot chick who isn't that big but fast.

What really sets this game apart is how they took peoples #1 favorite part of hockey and emphasized it while downplaying all the parts people really don't care about.  Fights are made big in this game with special moves that would be illegal in a normal Hockey game.  There is a Hockey Ring with flame throwers shooting out of the wall.  However, it is seriously lacking in character diversity, the first 3 are good choices, but I would like atleast 100 possible variations so it won't be clone wars.

Eventually we will get a 3rd gen MMO; but it will be blatant...nobody will be arguing (almost), and the devs won't have to keep saying it is next gen...a kid may repeat something a lot and believe it will become reality, or that they will convince peoples around them...but, it won't change anything.

Not yet...and not really thinking any I saw so far is.  Of course, sellers are prolly up to 8th or 9th gen or whatever nonsense, eventually they will have soo many they will drop back to our separations, where UO is 1st gen, EQ and WoW are 2nd gen.

Simple is good.  3rd gen will be blatant and obvious when you play it.

Hate to break it to you, but 3rd gen mmos have already hit the market.  Specifically Granado Espada.  You guys might like to bash the game for whatever reason, but it has clearly built upon Korean 2nd Gen titles and clearly has a different playing style then other mmorpgs out right now.

I would only consider Darkfall, Age of Conan and pirates of the burning sea as next gen. Since they are adding so much, and actually trying to innovate, every other game releasing or in development is the same old shit we have this and last gen ; / with new graphics lol
