Xbox 360 to bring in a younger crowd?

I know that AoC will be a great and revolutionary game. However, are you guys at all worried about the Xbox 360 bringing in a younger crowd? I know that the game is rated Mature, but so is Gears of War, and there are a ton of kids on there, ones that make you just wanna leave the match you're in. I realize the two games are very different, but I was just wondering what you all thought.

Well, I suspect that any game, irrespective of it's official rating, will attract audiences below that recommended age.

Mind you, once the guilds start to coalesce, you can be pretty sure that the immature gamers will be weeded out - that even worked with one of the worst game for that type of gamer - WoW. The guilds will attract certain types of players, and their own filtering will ensure the right people are represented. Although, age alone is not always the decided factor - it's maturity.

The other catch is that the 360 version will release far later than the PC version.

While I realize that they have not ironed out the servers, and if they'll be co-op, I cant see much reason for the 360 players to actually WANT to join servers that have been populated for months in advance, rather than start fresh on servers for just the 360.

That alone, to me, makes it less of an issue. Either or, subs are good for Funcom, and for AoC, so I'm happy to see more interested players.

It's not something you can "worry" about as a developer because you cannot control it in any way. The best way to manage it inside of a game is by the immature kids being forced to make their own communities or find out they have to act more responsible to join the rest of the playerbase

Good point Athelan, was just curious. It is really cool to actually see a game's staff posting on these boards.

The best part about playing GoW with little kids is that when they irritate you, you can destroy them.  Plus when arguing with them its easy to out think them.  I think it's added entertainment.

Indeed, but it can get old after a while, lol.

I don't understand why people are constantly complaining (not saying the OP is) about "kiddies" coming into games because developers are releasing them on consoles as well. I've had my share of ups and downs with immature players and consoles as well as PCs.

Point in case: Counter-Strike. How many times do I have to listen to kids scream racist/sexist/bigoted remarks at everyone just because they can? Or complain, at 120 dB about how everyone's a hax0rz or can suck their donkey balls? Same goes for World of Warcraft, which I haven't played in quite a while.

And just the other night, with an almost full room of 12 people, only 3 of which who knew each other, we held an impromptu discussion about the benefits and demand for electric cars on Xbox Live. A touchy subject, especially when we got into comments about who was resonpsible for holding back the development of the electric car (where things became slightly heated for a moment, especially when political party orientation came into play). The entire time everyone respected everyone else's opinion and gave everyone a chance to speak in rounds. We had no moderator and since it was on Xbox Live so only one person at a time gets to talk.

I'd say that's impressive for meeting people in real life also. So no matter where you are, you'll just have to face the fact that kiddies will come. You can pretend that the PC is an oasis of mature, well-behaved players who all respect the electron-o-sphere or that consoles are the dark, damp nesting area for the cockroach-like "L337 h4x0|2z", but neither one is completely true or false.

In the end, I'll be playing AoC on my Xbox 360. Partly because I can't afford a new desktop, and partly because I'm dying to play an MMORPG sitting on my couch in front of my TV while talking to my friends.

Look at the maturity of people on the forums here as well, and tell me that it's a mature base of people who are just headed for PC's....

Maturity has very little to do with a number, although in an effort to find it, it's at least a place to start, since they cant give a psych test to people before the add CD-key and CC info.

We'll see if the "kiddies" are *allowed* to play AoC on the 360... Most of them have a Gold XBL account already which their parents pay for (we're sticking with the "kids" thing). AoC and other MMOGs will have their own fee in addition since they don't use XBL at all. Parents might say "hey, I'm already paying $50/year so you can annoy the piss out of everyone on XBL, now you want me to pay $15/month on top of that so you can annoy the piss out of everyone in one game?"

Overall though I think it's great to see MMOGs make the move to consoles. It opens a new market for new players, gives existing players a choice to sit at their pc desk or lounge on the couch with an HDTV and get the same gaming experience.

I want to make it clear, as some of you have already mentioned, that age has something to do with it, but don't assume young kids are really immature. I played Diablo when I was four, and it hurts to admit it, but I was annoying as heck. I played with my uncle online and after he slowly taught me that such and such was not okay and such, I slowly became more mature. I play WoW at the moment, until this comes out, and people are really surprised by my voice, and they often ask why I am not spamming and shouting immature comments and the like. Anyways, my point being that age plays a factor but some kids can be just as mature as adults.

Not to nit pick but diablo is 11 yrs old this year, how could you be "four" when you played it when your profile age is 26 yrs old?

However, some children can "act" more mature then adults i agree, but alot of adults do own a 360 too :P

im not worried about xbox 360 bringing in a younger crowd. Its good for the game to go more mainstream, so long as Funcom listens to the community, like it is doing and always has done.

    Maybe I am 26... Maybe I'm not... :)

Agreed, not all kids are immature and annoying but in my experiences, that is the exception not the rule. I could probably count on one hand the number of times since the days of Duke3D and Quake/Quakeworld until now that I've gamed online with kids who weren't just screaming obscenities and intentionally trying to make everyone else's experience horrible.

Not that adults are any better... a round or few of UNO on XBLA is enough to prove that, with all the freaks who whip it out and start masturbating for the camera during the game. UNO! ffs...

It is certainly not our intent to get younger people into the game by having it playable on Xbox360, the reason we wanted to do it is we felt the combat system would lend itself well to game-pad control.

If you think 360 players will annoy you, you could always play on a PC-only server. That's what I plan on doing.

Now to find the money to build a new PC by Halloween.

I'm very worried about the console involvment.  I just can't imagine an MMO worth playing that is associated with console play as well as computer.  Perhaps AoC will prove me wrong in my theory.  I imagine it will bring an immature player base.  We'll have to wait and see.

  • severiusseverius Member UncommonPosts: 1,516

I doubt that that will be a problem.  It was one thing when computer users had had a reason to be elitist... but now computers are about as difficult to run as a microwave.  Get over yourselves.

  • kingofnothinkingofnothin Member Posts: 112

IMO i think there are different reasons it'll bring a younger crowd. well this is a way of bring in everybody and not just a limited few.

    1. far more people i know play consoles than computers. say out of about 20 of my semi closest friends i know 1 other that plays on the computer. but 3/4 of them play console. because it's "so much cooler" to play on console than computer. i can get on uno on xbox 360 and see 5 dudes sitting around in the same room playing.

    2. xbox 360 is cheaper. a parent can buy an xbox for their kid and wont really need to upgrade it, to an extent. computers you constantly need to upgrade with new stuff multiple times. that cost money, and parents aren't going to keep throwing money into a machine when you can pay a flat fee and be done with it. so they already have a system that can run it. they will let their kid play on that instead of spending money to upgrade their system.

    3. privacy. as for me my system is in my room. a kid can be sitting in his room away from his parents, and pretty much do anything he wants to do. i'm sure the computer of the house is sitting in the living room/family room/kitchen or what ever and parents are walking by monitoring their activity. throw them in a room alone, they'll do whatever just because they can.

but whatever they can bring the younger crowd, i'll be using pc only servers i'm sure. haven't seen the sys. requirements yet, but i'm sure i'll be ok.

LOL.  Well done!  This is exactly correct.  All those dumb f*****n names that these kids make up as gamertags will be screwing up the authenticity of the environment.  If AoC lets this crap happen you can count me out.

Speaking of dumb names... I've seen two people on XBL with the gamertag of Gears Of War ##
