I'm a long time retired EQ1 player. I find the most fun in small groups/solo (while still being able to get good equipment) and doing trade skills. I really don't care for guilds or raids. Does it sound like EQII would be worthwhile for me? Thanks for the input!

it is why I cannot waste a lot of time in eq 2 because it is like all raiding and you must join a guild. Even more than eq 1 you must join a guild in eq 2.
Boycott EA Games. RIP Sim City.
You basically must join a guld in eq 2. And for all the good stuff must raid for end-game. So I just play once in a while. I play Vanguard a lot more because it is more solo and small group friendly than eq 2.

Don't forget to mention how horrifically unfinished and generic it is.

As far as I know there are certain things you need a guild for like buying some of the house types and getting some of the best mounts require you to be in a guild and that the guild is of a particular level.
I don't see anything that would stop you from crafting and leveling to 70 solo. I just don't think you'll like it because that isn't really how the game was designed to be played. Personally I dislike large guilds and prefer to solo a lot and play on my own free time. I wouldn't pick this game to try and do that though which is why I play with about 3-4 other people almost all the time.

I also am a long time EQ1 player, started with Kunark/Original in 2000. I have seen the pre-Luclin game and the post, I know what you mean.

Everquest 2 offers probably one of the easiest solo environments without being a totally solo game. The six person group is still the core of EQ2.

Let me tell you what I think EQ2 offers and what it doesn't:
Everquest II does offer solo, group and raid content. Originally it was built around a two faction system of Freeport and Qeynos. However since Echoes of Faydwer that is slowly changing. They are now in development of Rise of Kunark and it sounds like it will be more like the original game where each race has a starting city. The factions are becoming more varied. Also they recently released Neriak as a player city for certain races.
You will find that many of the goodies later on are tied to having a guild. For example discounts on houses (or access) and mounts require a certain level guild. This doesn't mean "guild=raiding", it simply means the game expects people will associate with a guild. Making a guild is easy as well.
Everquest II has changed the way encounters work in several ways. For one thing you have solo, group and raid mobs easily recognized by the symbols above their heads. This takes some of the guess work out of which kind of mob am I dealing with. Also mobs are grouped into pre-determined groups. So you know if you pull this gnoll, two more are going to come. The purpose behind this is to allow players and groups to take on multiple mobs without wiping. It gives it that more action combat feel when your fighting loads of mobs, and the mobs "hardness" is spread out between the mobs, so it's about as tough as a single.
Everything in EQ2 is much more "automatic". For example if you want to know the /con to you the title of the mob shows you already, no need to /con it. You can target your target's target. Meaning if I am the cleric and target the main tank, my melee and nukes hit the monster not the tank. Same goes with healing. If I target the monster who has the MT targeted, my heals will hit the main tank not the mob.
Quests, quests and more quests. Yes one of the big differences between EQ1 and EQ2 is that while you can play without questing, your gimping yourself. The game as an AA system but isn't tied to adventure experience, rather through achievements. So let's say you kill a named boss, or explore a new area, or collect a rare item, this will give you AA exp. Additionally completion of quests (not all, but most) give you AA exp.
Quests give you large amounts of experience and usually nice items in return. The game doesn't FORCE you to quest, but you will level slower for sure without them.
Spells are automatically given every level, but with a twist. SOE believes that more carrots in smaller chunks is better then large carrots less often. So at each level, with each ding you will receive 1 or more new spells/abilities. The twist is that there are varying degrees of power to your spells. Basically it looks like this...
The things that make EQ1 fun are still possible in EQ2 but without some of the headaches. In options you can choose to “lock” your solo and/or group encounters. What this means is that when you tag a mob you are locked in an “encounter”. If they were to kill the mob for you, you still get credit and rewards. I am not sure about this but I believe that is default, and if you lock your encounter other people not in your group or raid cannot heal you while in an encounter (not sure). There is a help button where you scream for help and break the encounter. In doing so you remove any experience or treasure that you would have got.
Ninja looting is a thing of the past with lotto setting. Additionally you can set it to “free for all” if you wish or “leader only”.
Death is probably the biggest change. When you die you receive a 10% reduction on your armor health. This does not affect your stats or the effectiveness of the armor. All it means is that after 10 deaths you cannot use your armor or weapons until repaired. The repair is a money sink. Also when you die you are teleported back to a safe spot. Sometimes there are several to choose from. You receive a small exp loss. You do not loose any items or have to make a corps run. Death is very light penalty.
Everquest II has these features and more:
And finally the best thing about EQII….
Holy Windstalker is dead!

EQ2 is about raiding and guilds more so than EQ1. EQ1 has a lot more content to offer smaller groups and soloers. If you are an original EQ1 fan it is highly unlikely you will like EQ2. EQ2 is nothing like EQ1, nowhere near as good.
Exactly right, man.
Too many people are misleading. EQ 2 has forced gameplay. You are forced to join a Guild. You are forced to raid if you want to experience content and progress.
The new expansion (Rise of Kunark) is only going to make it more forced to guild, group, and raid.
Exactly right, man.

If you want to expierence GROUP content and RAID content and progress along those lines then yes EQ2 will require you to group and raid if you wish to explore those areas. But to play the game grouping and raiding are UNNECESSARY.. You dont have to have a group to get to 70. You dont have to be in a guild if you dont want to. I dont understand how somone can say that eq 2 has force gameplay when really all three gameplay styles seem to work just fine. If your soloing dont expect the best of the best, but do expect to be able to play the game and have fun.
When you want to fly guess what, you need a plane. In your words though, if you wanted to fly dang it Flying has a forced plane ride..

You obviously haven't got a clue, or you didn't play EQ2 long enough to form a sensible assessment.
You are NOT forced to do anything in EQ2 to enjoy it.
Lets make one thing clear, you DO NOT have to raid to experience the game to its fullest, raiding is but a small fraction of EQ2 in terms of content.

Fine. I will play EQ 2 a lot more if that is the case. LOL
I anticipate the expansion to be very in favor of raiders, groupers, though... what do you think, Flem? You also post excellent information on EQ 2 and are a reason why I bought the game. I bet the epic quest will require a lot of grouping and raiding.
I am a DIEHARD EQ2 raider. I raid every night and scout contested raid targets all the time. Our guild is devoted to raid content, raiding, and improving our characters to... you guessed it, raid more. You can check the screenshots thread in this forum for proof.
With that said, raiding makes up 10-15% of EQ2's content. The best items in the game for some character slots (equipment) is from solo and group content. That is why a lot of raiders ran off to Vanguard when it opened looking for greener pastures and MORE raiding content.
Also, guild rewards for certain level guilds allow you to get REDUCED pricing on housing and mounts that are AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE IN THE GAME. Only the city vendor sells anything restricted to guilds, and there are no housing or mounts on that vendor. Mostly trinkets and titles.
"Granted thinking for yourself could be considered a timesink of shorter or longer duration depending on how smart..or how dumb you are."
Hm
How did I manage to have two characters at max level and done nearly all major instances.
But have never been in a guild except briefly back in the low 20's?

Really, I'm not opposed to the very idea of a guild, I just wasn't up for one that was filled with bickering and people all stressed out about getting the very best.
As with life, it's much more enjoyable when the people around you are happy to be there and don't mind taking the time to stop and smell the roses.
So, if I do join a guild I hope they share my point of view.
Anyhow, I'm getting excited about playing again!
You should always join a guild that shares your ideas and honestly in EQ2 there are a bunch that do. I find more social guilds than raiding guilds but there are all types. Also the guild recruitment tab makes things easier to find a guild you will like
EQ2 is a very easy game compared to EQ1, at least the EQ1 I remember... So if you are looking for solo or small group content with nice rewards, it's a great game. EQ1 is definately more challenging and has much harsher penalties, but then who wants to be LFG all day? EQ2 has ALOT of solo content for EVERY class, and I don't just mean mobs that are soloable... I mean oodles and oodles of quests made just for soloers and small groups. like 75% of the content.
Wanna be a tank or healer who solos most the time? NoProb you can do it in EQ2, good luck in EQ1.
