Definitions of Role Playing Game that I found on the web just now.....

"Long games with elaborate storylines that involve going on a quest and building experience that makes the PC stronger (ie, Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons )."    Hmm... no mention about player behavior in game

"Basically, it is a game where the player plays the role of someone in a story. Plot is very important to RPGs so a game that does not concentrate on the plot is usually considered something else."  Realistically, how many of us are really following the plot in one of these games, we're just killing stuff and hanging out...

"Games like D&D, where the players control characters in a story"  Pretty much sums up how I see most people play

"A Role-Playing Game(RPG; often roleplaying game) is a type of game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters and collaboratively create or follow stories. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players can improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games."  Well, since I don't act like a Software Development PM or a married guy with 3 children in game, I think I'm pretty much doing a decent job of role-playing.  Note the comments about players improvising freely within the rules of the game.  Notice, none of these games have any rules about role-playing behavior, its not what most of us would sign up for.

OK, here's the bottom line. I've roleplayed so hardcore that my all-orc guild had an actual language that we had to learn to communicate and we never, ever were allowed to go [OOC].  While we were fanatical about it, other than 2 or 3 other guilds on the server no one else role-played and thought we were a bunch of loons for doing so.

But that was OK, we didn't own the game, and we certainly didn't think that everyone else had to follow our example.  Most people got a big kick when accosted by the Shadowclan (well, except for the people we killed of course) and we were highly respected on the server (again, maybe not so much from the people we routinely killed)

To the hardcore RP'ers out there, enjoy what you like to do, and don't ask others to follow your example.  LoTRO did a great job adding an OOC channel, and RP'er turn it off so they don't have to break their immersion.  As someone else pointed out, most of the games we play today are really MMOG's and how would you like it if players asked you to quit role-playing in them because you were ruining their game experience.

And the only reason you "RP" on the Matrix forums, is because the section is called "Role-Playing Forums"... hence the "Role-Playing".  Or did you mean the forums on mmorpg.com?  If so, then y'all are just obsessed.  :D  The Matrix Trilogy, IMHO, was mediocre at best, and MxO was its only redeeming quality... before SOE took over, of course. :)

All-in-all, I used to be into the whole RP scene, but I guess I kind of grew out of that.  Oh, and whoever said that the second most annoying thing in an MMO is all the RPers crying and whining all the time... SPOT ON MATE!  You hit the nail on the friggin' head!  You just can't please some people.

Lol he only takes the definition that he want, in one says

no mention about player behavior in game <--- because is good for his point of view

    While in the other says

Realistically, how many of us are really following the plot in one of these games, we're just killing stuff and hanging out... <-- no point of the definition? just telling "be reallistic" ?

So, be mature and objective, dont manipulate things to go reason, if u use some descriptions use in the same hand the two, dont take the word as it is in the first, and the second be so subjective "and reallistic".

The matter is that, because you say "klling stuff and hanging out". Not everybody does it... and as you see, ROLE means something, and this word is in the description, people is talking about wat it MUST BE, no what people like you are doing on it. Perhaps the term Action Game, dont means... action? an action game that have no action? a role playing game that have no... rp? its the same, the problem really is because mmorpg or rpg is used for everything that have "characters and statics", I think games like the free korean rpg are not RPG itself, are action massive multiplayer games, ACTION games, just to kill things and hanging out... but this is not a RPG... rpg involves a background, a bit of IC and no metagaming, perhaps you must see how some people PLAYS ONLINE Neverwinter Nights or you are one of this WoW players that says "UUU I cant jump, what a crap game" (if you wanna jump, go and play mario bross).

    I like that wording, create.

Based on their character, they determine the actions....

    Players can improvise.

So in a RPG game, players are able to create stories, have their characters act in ways that may represent their character, as well and creativly come up with improv-like dialect.  RPG.

Aside from the definition being as clear as it can get, I believe no one is forcing anyone to follow these RPG rules or ideals.  But if your in a game, such as a MMO(RPG see definition above) it can almost be expected to have and see this happen on a regular basis?  Now the OP may come across as forcing something on a player base, hell, I may even come across that way.  In all reality all I want is people to not be suprised when they are called out for conduct when they are playing a MMORPG.  Personally I am tired of getting strange "tells" from people asking me what I am doing, when it should be me doing the opposite.

I stick the the theory that people must be led to roleplaying and not expected to just find it on their own.  For a lot of these kids playing now these games are their first introduction to roleplaying and they are simply doing what kids do, following the masses.  So if the people who know how to do it are rejecting them and the rejects are amassing together there is no real reason to believe that roleplaying as we pencil and paper players knew it to exist is going to survive.

Tenacious D is an anomally in the music business to this day because all of the classic rock and rollers just expected the new guys to watch and learn while they were busy living out their own fantasies.  Only now do you see that rock and roll didn't really die, it, like a lot of other things that were old but still very good, was misplaced and forgotten.

College, which might be more familiar to you all, is the same deal.  It exists to teach you all that has been done before so that when attempting to create something new you will have a good platform from which to start. I say, don't reject them, teach them.

Breaks into song "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way!!!!"

hehehe I lecture so much that it even makes me sick sometimes. LOL

I'll add though that there are more kids coming in to this market every day and what we rp'ers call rejects are more than happy to snatch them up and teach them all the wrong ways of having fun.  First you need to realize that all of your roleplayers are pioneer's in this MMORPG thing and second you need to take responsibility for your greatness if you hope to maintain your way of playing.

Well the RP community I generally do associate myself with is very open to others, even those who are very green at it.  Ryzom was a great media for RPer's new and old, because it offered a blank slate, a world with lore, but no real defined playstyle.  It was great to see what developed, as well as seeing new people get into the player driven stories.  There were many that did not RP, but they were respectful to those who did.

Everyone gets their start from somewhere, and if anyone comes across in my direction, I would be more than willing to give out a few pointers.

In truth you are always playing a role weather it's in character or out of character.  If you are not roleplaying your chacter you are still roleplaying yourself.

I do not believe neo's topic is meant to ask why isn't everyone role playing in mmorpgs. I took his topic to ask us if there was any role playing at all in mmorpgs. I can see the frustration.  Most games that put themselves in the Massive multiplayer Online Role Playing Game catergory do have in depth and detailed storylines. These stories have a fantastic lore by which players get an understanding of where their avatars come from and why they behave certain ways.

Or else we would be playing Progress Quest.

So , yes, as those who have said already, role playing does not have to mean you must play a certain way or you are not part of the elite club of gamers. the minute you choose your profession (if you play in a class/profession game) you have a role in the game. However, if you truly enjoy role playing another persona, is this the best MMORPGs have to offer? A role playing server?

Kylerans post intrigues me. The Orc guild sounds interesting. How did that play over with other non guildies in the game? Did you stay in character when in a pick up group? Was it a signature thing with your guild? Did other players enjoy your company when you were in character? Or was all of it just within the guild?

All I am proposing is that a game offer something for those who do like to immerse themselves in the persona they created. Offer opportunities for gaming in this manner. MMOs have provided content for causal gamers, raiders, crafters, PvP, GM special events, etc.  Is there a way to offer players of MMOs role playing journeys?

Maybe a player logs and creates a Warrior.  Perhaps a difficult obstacle is name generation. For some reason you can call yourself RonaldMcDonald3 or IownU. If you can't find a suitable name a name generator program is there for you. Now you have an alignment chosen or created : Chaotic Good. Behavioral traits chosen: Atheist and perhaps even a Xenphobe (just having fun here, those arent true definition links). Now the game loads a series of story arcs catered to this build as well as your standard story arcs and missions. This player has factions, KOS settings like other games. Now the player can work on his characters core principles as well as his/her adventuring experience.  Role Playing awards can be alignment based items, new abilities, unlock adventures, faction improvements, access to unspeakable NPCs, etc.

I am no Grammarian, but I will concede it is tough to keep on topic for the OP. Is he a Patois?

Now-a-days casual gamer is the epitome of what's wrong with MMO's.

Casual gamers just want to rush rush rush through, grind, level up, and get through the game with AS LITTLE THOUGHT, as littler effort, and as little time as humanly possible Consume consume consume. Parasites!!!

Hardcore gamers, of course, are just as bad, if not WORSE, but in the opposite way. They want it to take a year just to level up, they want to grind for hours just to get 1 XP, and they want to get through the game requiring you to dedicate your life to it, with more effort than you put in anything else, taking AS LONG AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.Hardcore gamers want it so that if you die in the game, you have to die in real life. Instead of constantly eating like a glutton, they are like an anorexic, who purposefully tortures themselves with the lack of consumption.

The difference is that no one cares about hardcore gamers. They are a very small group, in the very small MINORITY, and don't pose a problem to the game; only to themselves.

Casual gamers pose a HUGE problem, because they comprise a HUGE portion of gamers.

Thus MMO's will cater to the majority (Casual Gamers) to create an MMOMCG (Massively Multiplayer Online Mass Consumption Game)

Only core and hardcore gamers know what a real video game is made of, and what video games are meant to be. I don't understand why they can't just make a REAL mmoRPG and ignore everything the hardcore players want.

For MMO's, the days of Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger for the SNES are over. Now are the days of casual gamers and the Mcdonalds fast food generation.

I wish MMO's never made it big in the financial world (Stupid WoW!!!) Maybe then they'd cater to core gamers and make some real video games. I don't want my video games to cater to the Average Joe Moron who has to have the game retard-friendly, neither do I want my video game to cater to the Rare Hardcore Breed who is maschosistic and equates challenge and gaming difficulty with suffering and frustration.

    Why can't they make a game that's

    1) FUN

    2) Amazing (art style, classes/skills, graphics, sound, world dynamics, minimization of frustration, ease of play)

    3) Challenging, BUT NOT FRUSTRATING

A game that has perma-death or a penalty for dying isn't more difficult, it's MORE FRUSTRATING. Difficulty and challenge has to deal with intelligent AI, witty PvP, or a system developed to require thinking, planning, intelligence, knowledge, and just plain skill.

Oddly enough, UO and EQ were the two MMORPG's I spoke of in reference to RP.

Although you went off on some completely different tangent, although it shows a few good points, is a little off topic.

I'm a fairly hard core RP-er... but not in any MMO.

I dislike video games for true RPing, I prefer better systems with more possible actions, like Dungeons and Dragons. (Not DNDO -_-) I don't understand why anyone would RP with text when you have an avatar thats just sitting there. I'm fine with just text RP, I do all the time in Play-by-Post DnD games, but when you have a character who sits there while you "supposedly" "walk to the fire and gaze into it's powerful flames" or something like that, I find it loses it's charm.

Anyway, I dislike RPing in MMOs myself, but will respect anyone else who does, because, like I said, I RP in different mediums.

Also, OP, learn how to type cohesively...  I  doubt your status as an RPer with crappy chat-speak like that.

I think WoW RP is decent; there are specific RP servers, so non-RP l33ts on RP servers can be told to go away w/o them saying that it's everyone's realm.

Anarchy Online RP is entirely different. You try to RP and get into the storyline of the game and some ruge player comes up and just says "OMFG NEWB! WTF ARE YUO DOING???" And it just ruins the RP environment. I agree w/ the thread starter, but some people, including me, didnt know about RP when he/she started playing an MMORPG game. You just have to calmly tell them about what you are trying to do, RP wise, and ask them not to inturrupt. If they continue being rude, just walk away/ignore them/report them. Easy as that.

And second of all, if a game was generally made to be roleplaying only, and not to make money, then yes it should only be played by roleplayers. But I know (correct me if im wrong) of no game that was made just for people to roleplay in. What company would tell someone that they can't purchase their game because they aren't going to roleplay. Also, about MXO, It's aot easier and more accepted to RP a modern style character like the ones you play in MXO, opposed to other fantasy characters in other games.

That's why MXO has more RPers overall I believe.

Ok I played MxO, and I will say now that I did not roleplay for a single minute

nor did anyone care..things like RP are not and should not be enforced upon somone who has no real intrest in doing so. I hardly roleplay in any game, though others might do it around me, I understand what they're saying and usually reply in a way they wont mind.

Saying someone shouldnt play lets say..MxO because they havent seen the movies or really care about the story is just childish. Same with Lotro, i havent read the books, dont really care either, its just a game and no harm is done to anyone because id rather not waste more life than I already do reading those awfully large books.

Point is, its just a game, and some people could care less about the storyline, but that in no way hampers your gameplay

Are you for real? The way you're promoting RP'ing is just hurting it.
