Does anyone else care about Real Estate?

Hey everyone. I'm fairly certain this hasn't been posted recently, I haven't seen it anyway. So, to me, real estate is awesome. UO had it, I loved it, and SWG had it. I just think it's a fundemental part of being 'elite' in society. Land also gives somthing to PvP over (though no MMOs have implemented anything like that). Anyone agree? Or does anyone know of a game with really good Real Estate?

It's old, but Asheron's Call 1 had pretty cool real estate.  It was not uncommon to find houses out in the middle of nowhere and exotic places while exploring.

Asheron's Call has one of the best housing setups of any game. You actually have real land and a real house, and some houses are in some pretty dangerous places, which makes it fun to shoot wolves from your front porch :D

Hmm. I'll check it out. I remember with SWG creatures couldnt follow you in buildings. So my guild set up 2 houses in the middle of an area with these huge things that gave absurd xp. It was pretty cool, though an exploit.

Actually Anarchy online implemeted PvP for land with "notum wars" and it was done quite well and is perhaps the only mmo to make PvP mean something. The more land your side owned the more bonuses for certain abilities you received.

There were certain areas that were more valuable than others as well. You didnt build housing you set up mining equipment and neccesary safeguards.

If another faction attcked your mining area your whole guild was alerted and you could instantly transport there to defend it.

IMHO there has been no expansion for AO that lives up to that 1 to this day.

    What is your physical limit?

I remember playing on Darktide and seeing like a lynch mob surround the property of the guild I was in.   Good stuff back in those days.

Lineage II is all about PvPing for real estate. In fact it's the only way you can get most of the real estate in that game.

wurm is a big fan of land ownership.  not to mention that player made towns can be the trade hubs.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Ultima Online had the best real estate IMHO. Asherons call was alot like it, but UO did it first. Shadowbane actually had good real estate with owning a house outside of a castle (back when it was first released). UO:X was going to have the same real estate as UO...oh well.

There is something about owning your own property.

You are right, UO had it first. THEN the ultra-revolutionary Anarchy Online had it next. Then cSWG had it.

You are incorrect when you say no mmorpg has ever had PvP over land. AO had PvP for land as one of its first expansions. DAoC kind of had it. Though its not exactly the land the winners take. SB kind of had it. EvE has it, instead of land, it's space territory. AO still has done it best soooo far.

    http://www.anarchy-online.com/content/game/notumwars/articles/01.html

Not only that, AO also allowed players to defend their land even while they/their guild are offline. This took PvP over land to a whole new level.

It's free for anyone to view the current AO gameworld map, and see WHO controls what part of the gameworld land:

    http://www.anarchy-online.com/content/game/notumwars/map/atlantean.html

(on the top left where it says "dimensions" you can view the land control maps for the other 2 servers. AO calls each server a "dimension")

I could be wrong, but, I thought Anarchy Onlines real estate was just an instance kind of like Everquest II, where you just walk into your place. Not something you actually constructed on land, where everyone could see it. I could be wrong though.

Entropia Universe has a good real estate, some guy called Neverdie spent like 100,000$ on a space station.

If you are talking about the player apartments in AO, then yes, you are still correct about that. The entire public on the server can see the apartment building complex that players live in. But to go inside  the apartment, only players who have keys to the front door can go inside.

AO did it this way in response to looking at the bad side of player housing/real estate in UO. AO made it so every single player of every level, every skill, every economic level - would be guaranteed to have their own piece of real estate in the form of their own apartment. Which can be furnished, and even used as storage. Players can make copies of the keys to their front door, giving them to other players and inviting them inside. The apartment complexes in AO are already pre-built, and pre-located by the game makers. A new player simply picks what city or town to move into their new apartment.

    -------------------------------

As for player controled real estate in PvP.... any land in the gameworld taken over through PvP can be seen at any time by the entire  public. And visited by the entire public any time, at will.

Real estate is quite enjoyable, but it's so easy to create a flawed housing system.

I agree...real estate is awesome but, like SWG, it gets way outta hand.

having a home in a game gives it a more personal feel. UO has by far the best housing system avilable. DAOC has a decent one where you choose from templates of houses. UO allows you to fully customize your home to how you want it. It also allows for extra storage. Storage is a big deal to me, when u get into higher levels or you start selling things it's good to have alot of extra space. Also realestate allows you to run a business from your home. UO u can run a small business selling goods or u can run a super mall that thousands visit a day looking for anything they need. This is a better alternative as compared to WoW werer you go to the auction house and post everything. 1 by 1 by.  So i think real estate is a big deal in a game
