I have to agree with you there, i can never seem to DL any patch on their DLer. So i have to DL the patch from fileplanet. All the money they make and they have a crappy downloader, something isnt right.

i used to have to download patches from fileshack as well. it would give me a message saying i had an incompatible network card/driver and peer to peer is disabled but you can go to i believe the preference tab and select force peer to peer and wait about 2 minutes and it'll start downloading fine then.

I run a router and I had to forward the port as per Blizzard's instructions. I used to get the same error message before I did the forwarding. I don't get any errors now and It is a little faster now.

If you are running a router that might help.

I still download the patches from Fileplanet most of the time.

Lol like thats anything. They won't even pay for the space to hold there updates. Basically someone has to man up ( like I use to do) and go download it off some other site. Because I installed WoW on my main machine and it took a good 2 hours for all the downloads to finish because of firewalls, and other crap. Then when I installed it on my second machine for my lil bro I went online and get them all within 10 mins at max. So I don't even waste time with blizz downloader. I recommend to anyone just google the patch and you'll find it and download it 3x faster than blizz downloader.

Main issue with the Blizz Downloader?

    Its a crappy Bittorrent clone.

Blizz makes enough money they should host file downloads on their own servers.

    They don't.

If you are having issues with the downloader, run a Google on Bittorrent, and set your router or firewall to be as friendly to Torrent as you can get it. The Blizz one is not anywhere near as nice as the newer actual Bittorrent builds. And your own uploading can slow you down too, depending on your internet connection. yes, I said upload... like any other Bittorrent build, you are sharing the patch you are downloading.

or look for the mirrors for Fileplanet and such to download the patch.

thats what i usually do but there was a patch that was like 14MB, just 14MB. certainly that isnt worth all the effort of finding the file online well think again it took a good 10 min to DL 14MB. the thing is it runs fine when it doesnt detect a firewall. i guess i could look into my router like the other guy said.

i use utorrent as my bittorent client.

gameupdaest.org is a great place for torrent game files such as movies, patches, mods, demos, ect....

I think the crappy Blizz Torrent downloader is based on one of  Cohen's builds from last fall. When I get home I may dig about and see if I can find exactly which one, just to help get your settings configured easier, to save the hassle of digging for a mirror.

I used to have a problem, then had to  do stuff to the router and now the patches are super fast

It is pretty annoying considering the amount of money blizzard makes that they use bit torrent to distribute its patches instead of hosting them on their own servers. Its good for them because it doesnt cost them a penny to get their new patches out but its bad for gamers because many have alot of problems with Bit torrent.

Everytime this discussion occurs on the Blizzard Forums, i always have this link ready.

Take it away, Gabe, of Penny Arcade (whose WoW comic ones can be found on the main WoW US Site, and also in the official guides by Bradygames):

    http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/06/21

i do remember the Europe problem in the last big patch, with the Black Temple, if the downloader had stopped by anymore than 1 minute, you restarted the process... and then it worked fine until it got "stuck" again.

Some people needed 20 restarts to get the patch.

At least with LOTRO you can download the entire and install the  patch a full week before it's released. Once patch date comes up, the files are available for the patcher to read. genius.

I stopped playing WoW a couple of months back so I cant say about now. But in the past I never had any problems with the downloader. It always ran fine and at a decent enough speed. Maybe some of the problems people are having is due to updating at a busy time? Just a thought as I normally updated during quiet times and never once had a problem.

Bit torrent is actually the most efficient method of distributing data to large numbers of people. They should tune their client and make it more user friendly to config, but the ultimate source of Blizzards problem is there is simply to much data to distribute.  Blizzards requirments actuly exceed the speed of the connections that make up  the internet backbone.

Make sure you've turn on the option so that content is slowly downloaded when your playing or even when your not, Ive not really had issued with blizz downloader because come patch day the patch is download and only need to download a few Meg to finish up.

As to saying just becuase blizz make money from WoW *shock horror* they should host the files as regular downloads... lets just take the EU, about 1.5million subs, you'll have 1/2 million plus downloading a patch at the same time, I dont think there is a web server built that could handle that load and let you download at a good speed, if you have ever tried to visit WoW.EU on server maintainence day you'll know what I mean.. therefore bittorrent is the best way.

So you got to wait longer to download off the downloader, or need to take the effort to go to www.wowwiki.com/Patch_mirrors and click a link.. id rather blizz plough their WoW fortune into SC2 or Diablo 3 or the next expansion (if its not a PvP expansion.. then im getting my warhammer out).

So they can save money.  8+ million accounts paying $15 a month wasn't enough.

Lets say a million out of the 8 million decided to get the patch at the same time..  Wouldnt it be more reliable to DL from eachother than to hose  up a server?    That many connection would really bog down the speed.

I have never (since week 1 of wow) had a problem with the patcher.  Never had a bad speed either

Now imagine those 8 million people downloading a patch from a single (even several) host(s) at the same time. Channel will not allow this, so torrent is a good way to "host" a file.

Or maybe you would like to queue for several hours, if not even days to download?

Memento mori - remember, you must die!!!

i have tryied everything that blizzard has suggested i even called tech support. but it still just simply doesn't work all the time. its funny that all my other torrents work fine.

  • JackDonkeyJackDonkey Member Posts: 383

it's dumb that blizzard tells you ports to forward, torrents work just fine without doing that, why the hades is the downloader so stupid.

if you guys are also wondering why the blizzard dl is slow is

    1. so many people will be downloading that same patch

    2. they use bit torrent for their files so it goes that much slower

    I miss wow...
