Lol $180 for a soundcard?  Unless you have a bangin 7.1 surround sound system and it is the focal piece of your home (like in your living room) then do not waste your money.  Pick up a $90 one from Creative, sink the rest of the money into a better Motherboard, and get a really nice monitor to compliment all that.  I myself have a sweet 21" HD montor for a similar system.

I would agree with the above poster. Get a x-fi gamer card instead, it will help your frame rate.

I would opt for a better mobo too and a more powerfull power supply. 400W is minimum for a 8800 gts card you should really be looking at 600W upwards. 420W with your case might not cut it.

I would go for an Intel Dual Core and a P35 mobo rather than that AMD chip and cheap Mobo, but thats my opinion.

Also you might want to buy something that will let you install things on the pc !

To be honest... My integrated Realtek sound gave me even better sound in both my 7.1 speaker system as well as my 7.1 Zalman headphones than my Creative sound card (around 150$ i would guess it was at christmas) so i chugged it into the closet instead.

It may just be me liking Realtek but... how could you not? ;D

And about the 8800 GTS needing around 600W   that is Bullshit.  If you get a low-power Dual core-ish cpu you can be fine with a 550 or even a 500 even when using 8800 GTX... A 400 is a tad on the low side tho...

    Here are some suggestions...

First of all, NEVER use a power supply that came with a case.  They're always crappy, and your PSU is very important.  The Xclio StablePower 500W is a good PSU at a low price.  The CoolerMaster Centurion would be a good case to go with it.  It may run a little hot with that monstor 8800GTS, but it should be fine.

The X-Fi XtremeGamer is pretty much the best gaming sound card available right now.  There is a more expensive version with onboard RAM, but I don't think it's supported by many games.  Best thing about this card, is that it's only $89.99.

Intel's Core 2 Duo processors will generally give you better performance and overclockability (if you plan on overclocking) than AMD's current line up.  However, I'm not really up to date on the price drops that AMD has made.  You may want to check out a hardware site (Tom's Hardware is a good one) and see which processor will give you the best performance in your price range.

Lastly, you may want to consider a better motherboard.  For a PC such as this, I would suggest the Asus M2N-SLI.  Asus is a solid name, and that board has the nForce 570 SLI chipset at a good price.

The RAM, GPU, and Harddrive are both great.  Corsair is great, and I recently got one of those Western Digital SATA drives and it's fantastic.

    Some hardware links:

    ExtremeTech

    Tom's Hardware

    Firing Squard

    Good luck.

    Ohh I know I know I know.

1st get the 65nm processors from AMD if your going AMD.  They perform pretty well from what I hear, and don't cost alot like IntelCore2Duo.  The main thing that made the Duo perform better then Athlon is that AMD was using a larger 90 nm die size that created more heat and used more energy.

    Here is a link:

    AMD 65nm Processors Brisbane Core

Also your case looks wimpy.  I love the thermaltake cases, but its a minor thing.  Also I think the 8800 requires a bit larger of a powersupply.  I know an x1650 requires a 400 watt supply, and its a much less intensive card.

You don't even need to buy a soundcard because the built in soundchip on your motherboard works fine.

I only use the built in soundchip for the games that I play and I have 2.1 sound (two 4W speakers and a 12W subwoofer)

And I have nothing to complain about.

Heh, thats my case, bought it over 2 years ago.  Yeah, change the power supply, mine screwed up my whole system and the one they replaced it with caught on fire, so ya, change it to a 550+ quality one.

Also, no reason to get a sound card, the built in one is fine, whether you have a 5.1+ surround system or a headset.

Research a good Motherboard, whether you go Intel or AMD the Mobo is crucial.

    One suggestion:

    never underestimate a power supply.

Deadly serious.  I have a 650w one to be "safe."  I have had my power supply fry my systems.

Here is a good buyers' guide.

    http://anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2998&p=2

Gives you a better explanation of the choices/recommendations than you'll find in most forums.  The guide is for systems a bit more expensive, but they have SLI systems, so just buy one card instead and that'll put you in the right price range.

you are probably going to need at least 500 powersupply to boot that setup... Also may want a better case to keep all that stuff super cool with only 2 internal fans...
  • AlphamatroxoAlphamatroxo Member Posts: 32
I got only slightly less than you have for half the price on Newegg. But hey, if you have money to burn go for it

It looks good ... thou i have it in my box id avoid corsair memory (its high quality normally, but most often cost more than = good memory).

You can use the standard power supply but i sure as heck don't . A good brand few people know about is ttgi i have run them for a long time never had one go bad and they are cheap. (also know as super flower). I got a TTGI tt-520w [still using it becuase... why not?]  (ps tell me why this matters really if you know then i will admit you know computers)

Sound cards id never leave creative until there was a reason too so far there has not been. If your not using cerative speakers you have to SET  THEM UP RIGHT  and that can be hard.  But i like mine (x-fi pro w/ a logitech z5500s [modded to tighten subwoofer]). Still you can use on board sound it work much better these days then it used to.

people are right about p4 dual over the amd atm but honestly pick what you like.

Look for parts that look about as good as those you have pick but maybe cost 1/3 or more less, to cut costs.

Swap the AMD for an Intel Core 2 Duo,

    get a better motherboard,

    get a better power supply,

get a Creative soundcard (onboard sound is the lol).

MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

Comes with two but you can add four more.  It's a good case for it's price but it is pretty old so I to would recommend a newer more well made one.

God I honestly hate some of you people, when you don't consider a thing called a budget. You can always go higher and higher till even Bill Gates have to say stop.

This computer is good, but as the other said, you need perhaps a better mobo and PSU and then ditch that soundcard.  Otherwise it's pretty nice rig.

    About the CPUs:

The intel CPU equivalent in price to the AMD X2 6000+ Windsor is the Core 2 Due E6600 Conroe. The E6600 scores about 200 LESS on a 3dmark06 CPU Test.

forget about that sound card that is waaay tooo expensive, you dont need one unless youve got a very expensive sound system as well, your motherboard sound will suffice. Instead buy a better motherboard (read reviews as to which is good) a better PSU and for your sake change the pc case... it is fugly... get a thermaltake or something like that

    That is a solid system.

I would agree with everyone here to get a better powersupply.  Also I am not a BIOSTAR fan so I would suggest to look into a different MOBO, but that is only opinion.  Another opinion would be to switch to a creative card and save some money.  Especially if you plan to use your computer mainly for gaming.   You cant beat the sound it gives for gaming for the price.  IF you used your computer for anything else mixing/music, tv/dvd, etc.. I would suggest otherwise, but again for gaming the price is great.

The Intel 2 and AMD thing is all preference.  However, in my experience of overclocking, and I have overclocked all my machines and all my friends....  AMD has provided me better performance, and ran cooler, which is key.   IF you do plan on overclocking you will also have to budget in money for a good CPU cooler, and good Case fans.

dump the sound card i found them totally pointless unless u want your pc to be a sound system too
  • snapp69snapp69 Member UncommonPosts: 113
If your going AMD dumpt the Biostar board and the Sound card and find an ASUS or MSI nvidia board with onboard sound, they perform very well and it's all I ever use. I believe someone already covered this but never use the PSU that comes with a case, instead find a case with no CPU and pick up a Thermaltake 600w PSU. As far as Hard Drive, thats a decent one but if you can get a board with RAID I would suggest getting 2 x 10k rpm drives and running RAID 0. Your performance will be insane at that point.

You may also want to check out these guys as you can get the same parts for the same price but built for you and with  a warranty. www.ibuypower.com
