You are talking about pay by the hour.  I believe that was how it was first done.  But it was pricier.  I do think 15 a month is too much.  5 a month would be good.
  • SurtallSurtall Member Posts: 1

You may say, you are not paying for the actual hours to play, but for the ability to play during the time, but that is a ripoff.

This is how many companies operate.  Do you pay for only the time you watch cable TV or a flat fee per month.  How about  DSL internet.. flat fee again, there are hundreds of examples.  Also where do you get the number 720 hours.  The only way one person can play 24/7 is ?.  The only way i know an account is played 24/7 is "Gold Farmers" and people that share account with many others ripping off the MMO
  • nuthanutha Member UncommonPosts: 47

That would never fly. Like any other monthly subscription you pay a monthly fee for the product/service, typically not for how much of it you use.

720 hours would last me an entire year of gaming. Thats 60 hours a month, approximetly 2 hours a day but since I don't play everyday I can play for 4-5 hours at a time on the weekends.

Anyways, that would be ~15$ for a years service for me, and undoubtedly there are many others like this.

I can't see how any developer could afford to hold a staff and keep the game updated and supported for that. And don't give me an example of an Asian grindfest F2P game as an example, they don't have much or any support and the updates are far and few inbetween if any. F2P = Poor service at best.

I know there are some games that you can buy hours and time for and actually do go by per played basis.

A fun thought but hardly feasible for the "Top 10" developers.

This is basicly a "$15/month is too much" whine, nothing else. Go for free MMOs if your obsession is saving a few bucks.

Sure its not gonna fly & nobody is gonna change to do this type of a method.

Its just to point out, we pay for aprox 720 hours of game time per month & we dont get it. :( lol

well if everyone did ply 24/7 for each and every month the fee's would be more like 100 a month with server cost to run so many

If you are having trouble paying 15$-ish a month, maybe an MMO isn't what you really want to focus on right now.

It's 0.5$ a day to play an mmo!...

  • ZanthosZanthos Member Posts: 11

Big name MMORPGs are usually going to be $15 a month, no exeptions.  They need the money monthly to pay their developers, animators, artists, etc.. It may seem rediculous but it takes a while to start making extreme profit off 15 a month from each subscriber.  Big name MMORPGs costs tons and tons of money to release, and a lot to keep them running.  It may seem pricy, but 15 a month to keep kids away from the streets, drugs, violence, etc.. I think that's a good price.

I agree with the OP. a pay per hour system, with a cap at 15$ would be great. However this would only benefit the customer, not the company. In fact, the company will probably make less money. So I don't think it will ever happen.

lol no, I am not having trouble with paying $15 a month for an mmo.

"paying" the $15 a month was not what the post was focusing on.

no matter if my post would fly or not. It would be nice tho :)

sigh....guess il say it again just for you.

    I dont have a problem paying $15 a month....ok.....you got that ?

Are you sure ?  ok,  fine now that we have that out of the way.

Hint: the focus of the post was on the actual "TIME WE PAID FOR"

not that I or you have to pay $15. lol

Sure its not gonna change & we will still just be paying for a flat 30 days of "availability to use"

but it sure would be nice if we actually got to use our 720 hours that we PAID for. :)

month, then I did not get my money's worth. I paid for 30 days worth of play time & I didnt get it.

This needs to change to when you pay $15 for 30 days of play time, you actually have a play time counter that starts when you log in,

and then stops when you log out, then continues to count down the time that I have paid for the next time I log in.

In essence you pay $15 for about 720 hours of game time which is about 1 month.

You pay your $15, you log in & see a counter for 720 hours of game time beginning to count down, lets say I play for 1 hour, log out,

I log back in 2 days later and the counter says 719 hours to go & counting. " until I log out again.

You may say, you are not paying for the actual hours to play, but for the ability to play during the time, but that is a ripoff.

We paid for 720 hours & that is what we should be able to use.

you may say, then the mmo companies wont make as much $, I say if their game is actually good, then this pay method would

keep more players playing the game & drive more sales to make up for it.

Its time the MMO community stood up for what is fair. WE PAY $15 A MONTH FOR 720 HOURS & WE WANT OUR FULL PLAY TIME.

No actually your ripping your self off if you feel that way... I paid for LOTRO this month but have played less than 1 hour ... yet I understand i'm not paying specifically to play a finished game... I paying to play with other people and for them to keep updating the game and make it better. Currently the pay per month price has went up to 15.00 and even up to 18 for SOE subscribers but this will have to fall sooner or later. The way I see it if some "great" game can break the monopoly at hand with all games charging 15 and go down to 10.00 again like it used to be we'll be good off. BUT MMO's cost so much money to keep running that I cant see the monthly fee's going any lower than 10.00 this decade.

Remember what your paying for on P2P is the difference of gameplay, additions and material that F2P does nto offer. In P2P gold farmers and hackers can be banned but in F2P the mmo really doesn't care ... Enjoy what your paying for

    Games Enjoyed: UO,EQ,AC,EQ2,COX,LOTRO
    Games Played(-Above):WoW,MXO,GW(beta),RFO,ArchLord,V:SOH,Rappelz,Ryzom,DDO
    Games I felt were a rip-off: DDO,ArchLord,V:SOH - all newer how ironic

QFT. I have no problem with paying a monthly fee, and millions of others agree. If you feel the service isn't worth paying for, then don't pay.

If we moved to a pay-per-hour system, people would whine that they felt they had to make the most of every hour. Then it would be pay-extra-per-hour-to-gain-exp-without-leveling and pay-for-a-character-to-avoid-leveling-altogether. It's a slippery slope. Besides, everyone knows that Americans in general enjoy their monthly fee services. Everything nowadays is being moved to a flat monthly fee, even things that were typically pay-per-use. People like to know that the service is available to them whenever they like, without time limits or restrictions.

One thing about a pay-per-hour system... I believe merdian use to have that feature but you cant have it work to your advantage like that... If you choose to pay 15.00/mo fine but if you choose to pay per hour then you should pay even the maximum if it accumulates more than the 15.00 per month.  So if it worked this way then I would see it implimented like cell phones ... you can sign up for the cheap plan but end up using as much as the expensive plan on overage ....

    you guys are are pitifull.

you take everything way too seriously I see.

does anybody now days actually know how to do the following:

1..read a post & actually get the just of what is being said.

2..reply in a grown up manner & not just the normal 12 yr old flame ?

This is my 1st day of signing up on mmorpg but I see the community, like most boards, only

like to post flame posts. :( thats sad.

    Ummm...no.

15 bucks a month is totally fair, just look at how much entertainment you get for it. You COULD play for 30 days straight, a movie with a coke and popcorn costs you just as much, and only gives you 2 hours of fun.

You pay for the right to play the game...

I mean, I could also say: "Hey, a car insurance costs me x bucks a month, even if the Car stays in the garage all time. What a Rip-Off!"

If you don't even want to pay 2 Chewing Gums a Day for playing a great game, don't do it, leave, and let it rest.

Current Subscirber Numbers show that the Price is totally fair.

Well, the "sad" part, is that you can't handle ppl who don't agree with you. And that's the "12 yr old flame" part of this thread.

per hour play, regardless of price is a step back in the days of  BBS muds which was fine in it's own time but really doesn't make much sense.  At present it would have been very much the same scenario as asking your cellphone company to bill you only for the time your phone is communicating with BTS.  Certainly there are many new ways in which revenue streams may be generated but this is hardly a case. The monthly sub is based and calculated on the presumption that you won't spend 10 hours a day 7 days a week, using the service.  Having the invoice calculated based on hours played and direct costs associated with the use of the service, would drive the cost up not down as current price/cost model assumes that for every logged player there are at least 4 that hold active sub but aren't logged at the time.

Remember just that you're subscribed doesn't mean you have to play 24/7 ;)

720 hours for 15$ that's 2.1 cents per hour.  I don't think any mmo companies could survive with such a fee.
  • deplorabledeplorable Member Posts: 418

be glad you're in the US, here we pay £8.99 for the typical monthly sub in an MMO, which is around $18 with the current economic exchange prices.

    Good old VAT :)

Worth every penny, you should see what we sometimes pay for full priced games :-p

Allthough i don't see it implemented in the west and can see why , isn't this the way they play in asia?Isn't WoW played by a "pay per hour" system in china instead of the pay per month?
