It was definitely SWG Pre-CU, no other game has even come close to the feeling that you got from logging into that game for the first time. Thrown into a random city, no hand holding telling you what to do. You just did whatever you wanted with no penalties. Thats how a game should be, and I think thats what really turns me off of other games since playing it.

I don't think anyone is.   Just because you can be more unique in SWG doesn't mean you can't be unique in CoX.  This isn't a contest.

While you can make your power selections and slots slightly different from other people.. you are still essentially a Scrapper or Defender or Mastermind or what ever.

Sure it isn't complete freedom, but it's more than "slightly".  I have seen a one pet master mind who used nothing but pool power combat do well.  I had a build with all 4 travel powers.  I also have a dominator with only one skill from the primary skill set.

woot im glad so many people are posting in the topic

ya i use to play city of heroes/villains for a bit, but i never got into it to far, how is the population doing in it?

and if vanguard got fixed i think its fairly unique because of the sandbox feel, but god it needs such a powerful computer to run it

im still trying to get a trial key from somebody to give it a shot but nobody wants to give them up lol

Everquest definitely.  Being the only froglok paladin on my team was pretty unique.  You can say , "who is the best race x and class y",  You would usually only think of 1 or 2 players.  Imo, MMORPGs these days seriously lack races.  I think there should be about 20 races in current MMORPGs.

Looks: City of Heroes / Villains

Abilities: tempted to say none, as no MMOG has more (viable) options than it has players, but Vanguard might score high for the sake of mentioning one. It also helps that the game doesn't have a lot of players, as who could feel truly unique in WoW even with hundredfold the choices and variations it has now?

  • ShohadakuShohadaku Member Posts: 581

City of Heroes/Villians By far. No other game I seen even comes close to the near limitless options for designing a toon.

The character creation is a game in itself. Many possibilities to make the toon your own.

The skill setup is also very customizable.

Biggest thing, is your costume don't effect your abilities. You don't need that uber armor and weapon like other games. Meaning you don't have to look like anyone else. Your power is in your toons powers. You can get enhancements to boost these as you see fit.

The only other game I used to like for being unique was Galaxies, but that game is total garbage now. Screw you SOE for killing a once kick ass game.

As for the trend of MMO like you mention, I am sick of these MMO that are oversimplified games based to get all the mindless sheeple to pay. Mc-MMo's. It's no longer about creation, and imagination, it's about demigraphics and money.

    Dance Dance Revolution Online :P

Ultima Online. Since there were no real classes and they had a cool equipment system (where you could pretty much wear anything....like in reality), you could be whoever you wanted. If you didn't want to be a swordsman anymore, then you started training something else. Each toon was unique.

Shadowbane. There are an insane amount of different ways to make a character.

And you can make a character that is unique and also very good in PVP

I have to say EvE for me. Rght now you can alter the avitars facial features a lot. But also you can alter the charecters abilitys through the skill system.

Soon tho we are getting proper walking avitars which ar aparently very customisable [even as far as buying new clothes and doing new hair styles via a special shop. This comes late this year i belive.

Not exactly. I just have a slightly above average processor, geforce 7950, and 1.5 gigs of RAM. Runs WONDERFULLY. A lot better than most high end systems, actually.

But yeah, Vanguard makes me feel the most unique.

    rehashing.. Old SWG

right now i'm playing COX which seems to be very unique in itself

Eve is a great game for being unique.. or more or less specialized but that wears off after awhile... it's a long while though

UO is a good one too... forgot about that one...

I wanted to try Vanguard but it got such a bad rap when it came out... pity

    so yah, my 2 cents.

The most unique for me would be EQOA unlike other games, you place your stat points yourself as you get them from lvling so you CAN completely screw up your toon if you're not careful.they also have Master Classes and if you was a Magician like i was they had the most choices. With Master Classes your class title changed and you became more specialized version of your character/class you had Geomancer wich was a mage that specialized in the Earth type pets my MC pet was named Badi Elder was this big green female amazon thing with a vail over her face.Next was Pyromancer wich was a mage specialized in Fire pets his was named Efreeti Lord BIG DARK red genne with hairy hooved feet and a turban.Hydromancer was a mage specialized in water pets had Ghilan Noble she looked ALOT like the i Dream of Genie lady but blue..lol. last was Aeromancer had the air pet named Djinn Vizer, think Mr Clean with a Raden hat on..lol

that was it for the Class based Master Classes but there was also an Arch-type Master Class wich for ALL casters was Sage the arch-type was the hardest to get and had the most requirements.the Sage abilities was a 75% damage mitigation spell that lowered all dmg done to you by 75% for i forget how many seconds and the other ability was a HUGE mana tick spell.

Last was a Race based Master Class wich for Dark Elves was Chosen wich would be best for like a tank class. the abilities are a damage shield ability (Innoruuk's Aura)that was like a taunt everytime it proced and it proced everytime you get hit.other is a HIGH dmg attack(Spite)

sooooooo just for my Dark Elf Magician i had 6 different ways i could build that specific race/class and thats just the obvious things not counting details like where i put my points and what gear i had on.

most classes only had 2 class choices, mages have 4 different elemental pet types so they needed 4. and their pets being completely different from each other.water was a portable healer only healed me tho,Fire was a melee, earth was the tank pet and air was the caster.

and unlike EQ2 where they have 100 AA points, there was 1500!!! class mastery points to place where they want in EQOA. could customize everything from sta,hit points, mana mana regen,HP regen, down to your resistances.

crap almost forgot you could also become a Were-Hunter master class forget what all they get i know an attack forget the other. and ALL other Master Classes (accept Were-Hunters for obvious reasons) could go out and become infected by a WERE of some kind.the choices are Were Wolf,Were lion,Were Bear,Were Rat and Were Gator and its not 100% eitehr could take months to get bitten and infected by a were. so you could be a Dark Elf Geomancer Were Rat. you had a were form that was a small buff that you could upgrade through cms and improve the buff it gave also changed the look of teh were-wolf form to be a Wolf form.and also could get  like a "Bite" ability wich was a melee type attack (casters could even get it) and some other added bonuses

EVE online.  No two characters are the same.  Each person playing EVE Online will have trained different skills for different uses.  In addition it is rare for two ships two be fitted identically and for the same use as a result.   True definition of a sandbox game.

Even though I havent played alot of MMOS the one that has made me feel the most unique has been SWG, from weapons that you own and decorating of your house or city to the stuff that you craft.

The only MMO's that made me feel unique was UO and CoX. UO because it was SKILL based, as opposed to CLASS based, as well as you can dress up in a variety of different ways, without making you gimp. (Well, not anymore, but the old days were that way.)

CoX because of the character customization, as well as the no-loot enhancement choices and power choices to combine with your character's costume.

With a good skill-based system, you can easily be unique. With customizable look & feel (UO, City of Heroes/Villains) you are definitely unique.

That's it. Every other MMO, which are any that follow the EQ mold (EQ, EQ2, DDO, AO, FFXI, LOTRO, WoW, VG) I have NEVER felt anywhere near unique.

Definitely City of Heroes/Villains though. EVERYONE is unique in that game.

As long as there are classes, it's very very hard to be unique.

UO is my all-time favorite MMO, and IMO the best ever, next to CoX for costumes/unique theme and EQ for its immersion.

I dislike class-based MMO's, because there are too many of them, and I hate being a carbon-copy of everyone else who is my class.

With class-based MMO's, instead of "We need RonnyRulz, the powerful warrior." it's "We need anyone that is the warrior class."

I hesitate to wax nostalgic... but, unfortunately, I must.

Asheron's Call.  There was so much room to breathe with character creation that you could have a chef/mage/archer if you wanted.  Getting in character was so easy for me, even if we were all a bunch of block people that bounced when we breathed.  You could wear silly hats or masks if you wanted.  You could do just about anything within reason.
