WoW vs. GW - Review

A full time player of both WoW, and GW, I have 2 level 70s, 1 level 60, and in GW I have all 8 of my free player slots from all of the expansions at level 20, so I know what Im talking about, if you have any suggestions or comments or hate mail ( love those ) email me at John_n_grime@yahoo.com. Now we're ready to begin.

I. Starting out

Guild Wars - As you make your character you have a few "squares" of what the option will make your character look like, these are in 3d and move naturally (breathing and blinking) to see what your character will actually look like. This game offers you a few less quests than WoW but I must say they are more interesting and you probably will read your quest descripition instead of just accepting everything and reading the key bits. The game starts you out with standard looking armour and a standard weapon, nothing great or outstanding there.

World of Warcraft - This game offers alot less customizable features, character creation in this game does not show you 3d renders of what your character will look like with the new option, so its pretty much you click the button until you find something you like. There are alot more quests although with the " quest tracking " device you will not need to read any of the quests because, well it shows you exactly what you need to do in a little square on the screen.

First round - Goes to Guild Wars, keep reading daily as I will start a new section of the game every day.

Doesn't even compare... WoW is an mmorpg while GW is a CORPG... its like comparing apples and oranges. Both games have their good and bad side and trying to pit them against each other is just asking for flames.

Well I think, its important to get info about both games because like me, If I would have done more research I would have never picked up World of Warcraft.

Isn't this about 2 years too late?  Unless your comparing new features of each of the latest expansions or something and since you started with the character creators and initial quests it doesn't appear you are, I don't know what purpose this serves.  Especially since anyone can download WoW and play it for free for 10 days and try it out.  Much better than someone telling them what the game has to offer.

I like WoW.  Easy to use interface and plenty of new content getting added all the time makes for a great game.  As the earlier posts have said though, a topic like this is just asking for a flame fest.

Right ok, I think it's time for a fist fight between people who play WoW and GW.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

  • Its pointless to to do a one vs the other because they have a different fundamental design philosophy.

WoW is about investment.  Without investment in gear and xp the game is essentially meaningless.

GW is about tactics and stragegy - GW is far far  far superior in tactical and strategic gameplay and character builds to not just WoW but almost all MMORPGs ( except maybe Eve ).  However some of the the things that make this possible also completely undermine a sense of investment in one character.  Almost everything in GW is geared towards rapid deployment and perfection of tactical gameplay and strategic character builds.  Its is the main reward mechanism and the way all gameplay initiation is designed around.

I find that intellectually I am far far more impressed with Guild Wars.  However that says nothing about which one person will like.  One of the main draws of RPG's in general is the investment.  The idea of making progress.  But for some people the actual execution is also very important and being able to have lots of options with a cool building scheme.

Wow... You have eight level 20 characters and you still haven't understood that GW is not MMORPG?

I understand how they are diffrent, but this is for the people who have not played either and are looking into which one they should play, like i said before, it is important info if you have not yet played either.

Hahaha well to me GW is an MMO has the same functions of one just with a different style of quest/world exploring, but WoW i think would win in making a character only because of the # of armors and weapons that make someone unique.(Still to start with GW has the advantage in making the character in the biggining, but after wards more than 1k of people will look just like you ^__^ )

BUT i still play GW a lot more than WoW ^__^

I think it's pretty simple.  Guild Wars is for PvP and WoW is for PvE with some PvP mixed in.

WoW requires a larger time investment, but is still a lot faster then most MMOs to date.

Guild Wars has nicer looking character models, but WoW has better animations and is a true 3D enviroment in which you can jump and swim underwater.

Guild Wars has a single player style PvE game that doesn't last very long.  The quest IMO are very boring.  Of course this is my opinion.  I enjoy the WoW quests as I don't always want to read the whole quest.  I've done a lot of quests in WoW that I have enjoyed.

Guild Wars relies more on the characters skills.  WoW also relies on a players skills, but Equipment has more of an impact.

Basically they are games for differnt types of people.

guild wars has good pvp and requires skill, tactics, and stradegy to win.  pve is ok.

wow has sucky pvp that requires you to invest alot of your life looking for good armor and weapons in dungeons just to stand a chance in pvp. pve is pretty good. lots of quests to do. the thing is it takes alot out of your time to do and to get to lvl 70.

sup guys, I agree you really can't compare GW and WOW.  Both have there pro's and con's... the character selection and creation in GW is pretty sweet the quest are not to hard for a new player and the arena pvp is ok. As for wow  the game content is nice, the raiding /pvping is fun when u have a good group. character development is aslo sweet. I just can't stand the questing/lvling grind. I'm a war monger. I live for the PVP, so to me the best pvp game ever made period is ShadowBane. there is not 1 game on this market that comes close to it.... I say that because I have played every mmo out  there.....
