They have either all just sucked lately or the magic is gone... I'm not sure which, but I'm not spending another penny on them untill they stop sucking.
Is it just me or is this the way it is... Maybe I just dont like them anymore and these are really great games afterall.
What do you guys think, am I delusional or just bored with the genre or is it really that bad?
Comments
I agree... The first MMORPG i stepped in was truely magical. I couldn't believe it, i was having a blast.
Now over the past year things haven't been doing so well. SWG (sucked) DAoC (meh) FFXI (dissapointed) Lineage II (Ahaha, yeah right) CoH (Boring, and repetetive).
All those MMO's I have tried and haven't done too well with.
Hopefully EQ2 will bring me back into the MMORPG genre.

ATI - The way it really plays, if it's working....
Well I think there are a few peices to your displeasure lately.
First, the "WOW" factor of the genre is certainly gone and never coming back to the extent that it had originally, at least not for someone that has played past MMORPG's a lot.
I remember the first months I was playing EQ and I couldn't get over the size of the game, the amount of people I met from all over the world, etc .... I truely felt like a little kid again ... learning about the world I lived in slowly. After having experienced that feeling, I doubt I (and I think most people) will ever experience that again in the genre.
The second problem lately is that the recent releases has tons of hype and some flashy screen shots, but almost all of them missed the mark one way or another in my opinion. I certainly like certainly aspects of Lineage II, City of Heroes, and others, but none have given me the full experience or immersed me into my character like EQ or DAoC did for me.
I really think these recent releases missed the immersion peice of the puzzle. If you do not connect with your character and feel like you are a part of the game's world then it is hard to stay interested for very long. City of Heros is my most current example for me. I think it has great stuff going for it, but there is such a limited amount to do, IE just do missions, I find that I am never really into building my character and feeling like I am a part of the CoH world. I know others love it, but that is my take.
So to me, the genre is going to really need some polished content heavy games with tons of new places to explore, mobs to kill, etc. I am really hoping that either WoW and/or EQ2 bring this to the table. Personally I am leaning a little more to EQ 2 just becuase most of my friends are aimed that way and for me playing MMORPG's is about having a good time with my friends.

Anarchy Online. oh my god. i did some reading up when iwas looking for a new game. and they are all correct when they say AO is the game to be playing. even if it is 3 years old, its bomb, and im addicted to it. anyone looking for a good game, ao is it.
AO was the last mmo that I played and actually had fun with. I guess SWG was ok too.
Did you guys hear about the 3 free thirty day game keys that theyre giving out to current subscribers for their anniversary. If anyone wants to give one to me just send it in the mail either at mmorpg or logohere@msn.com. P.s. when i played it , it was the bomb!!

In my opinion, just wait for the next wave. I think UXO, World of Warcraft and Dragon Empires will set the new standards.
I wish I could say I was still excited about all the MMORPGs that are coming out but I see the same thing over an over in them. Not much new but alot of excitememnt going on to make them seem better.
I have left several games of late and I restarted EQ as a level 1 charactor and am truly enjoying OLD SCHOOL gaming. I am not accepting twink items or power leveling and I am having fun again.

It's just you.
In my MMORPG history i still have witnessed some moments that brought back a slight bit of magic. I remember being the first group to raid the tusken fort in SWG. We camped outside, socialized a bit, and went in for the adventure.
I remember in DAoC my realm had the keep in Albion.. I wasn't too sure what was going on, i ran up to the top of the castle, looked over the ledge and saw a whole bunch of Midgards at the front of the keep, shooting the people up top, breaking down the door, i felt a rush of excitement... And then afterwards i took a stumble off the castle wall, but that's a different story!
Anyways, still on the quest to find a "good" mmorpg.
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot
Upcoming: EverQuest II
I did the same thing just last month and am trying to hit hunting grounds I never spent much time in and playing classes/races that I never tried. It is fun to go back and do it the "hardcore" way...I know it isn't for everyone...but I actually ditched my old account just so I wouldn't be tempted to twink or anything.
Although, I do have to say with the new tutorial and items/pp you get...it is easier earlier on, but you still have to work at it

The key to me is varied content that makes me want to experience it through the eyes of my character.
That was the problem with SWG for me... just felt like power leveling and content came out/was debugged at a snail's pace. Nothing was worse then spending an entire night trying to get through a set of missions just to find the last piece broken.
What this also says to me is most games are being released once game mechanics are somewhat stable (not perfect) and content has yet to be completely thought through/implemented.
It also suggests to me that the key designers are already working on expansion packs (ride that revenue treadmill) and your second tier people are left trying to keep people interested until that expansion pack ships.
I really do have high hopes for EQ2. Some of what I've read makes me think that power leveling won't be easy to do and will force people through the content... thus making a community and bringing back some of the magic.
It's just you.
It's me too.

% i jus have one thing to say bout this and that's that mmorpg's will never die cause they are the greatest invention since the pop tart and the only thing you'n complain about is the fact that they cost money...so you should stop worrin bout quality and realize that its not just the graphics that make a game, its the people you play it with and the staggeringly awesome character that you'n sculpt...i prolly didn't make much sense just then, but if you understood me, bravo XD...thats my cowboy opinion...your entitled to yer own... cya round %
Well, over these last few years, the MMORPG genre hasn't been too great in my opinion, with some big time flops, and nothing really dramatically new. Hopefully 2004 hopes to change this, with games like EQ2, Guild Wars, MEO, Tabula Rosa, etc... Perhaps they will be able to bring back the pizzaz that the MMORPG genre had during the days of EQ and such, perhaps not, but at least it hopefully will bring back some joy in this genre, otherwise we just may see a bunch of verteran MMORPGers to leave the genre, because at the moment, that's how the genre is shaping up. But I still think there is hope with this year of games coming out, just maybe, just maybe.

My first MMORPG was really magical too. UO it was, and everything was amazing. From there on its been a series of different MMORPGs which have all provided a lot of fun for a month or two but then gone down the drain. Im awaiting EQ2 as well. I think it just might bring back the magic.

I have yet to have as much fun in a Graphic MMORPG as I did in a few of the old text MUDs.
I hate level grinding. I like having fun with a group of people interacting in a game world setting. I like to play off the wall characters, tell terrible jokes and rotten puns.
LevelQuest, DoaC, Shadowbane, SWG... all disappointing. I was supposedly holding out for CoH, but I refused to purchase the game for a change until some reviews came in. No content. Forget that. So now I'm hoping for WoW. We'll see what happens with that.
One thing that would help would be the game designers set aside roleplaying severs from the moment of launch. If I could really find a game that would enforce tossing the script kiddies off at least one dedicated server, I would be much happier. I'm not a hardcore roleplayer. No thees and thous here. I just want a place I can play a SF or Fantasy game where they REALLY enforce little things like characters not named "The Rock" and "aRag0rN6" and removing people doing shouts for scores of Yankees games. That's not that much to ask, ya' know?

Yea i agree. I hate it when people are named like "devil666" or any name with numbers. They should first develop a naming system like if you want a number you can make it "Goliath the 3rd" not "Goliath3" you know? But i think they should hire more people to stand around in cities making sure noone is yelling things which don't relate to the game.
Hell, i'de do it for free! I'de love to moderate servers. I mean i could still play the game, but if someone yelled something inappropriate i could just send them a quick /tell in a different colour which let them knew i was serious about their attitude. I hope EQ2 will provide this magic im looking for
