4 years ago the nex gen games were to be: Lineage 2, WoW, EQ2. SWG was a disappointment to most. You also had CoH and guild wars around the corner.
My question to you old schoolers is (I was MUDing pre WoW) what are the best pre WoW games still going that still have a population if any?
Comments
DAoC will always be in my heart, it was the first mmo i ever played, i haven't played it for some years now, but i still love it.

Hands down DAoC
MxO Vet 04-06
COV/COH 04-07
WoW 04-07
waiting for war.
You have to play the original MMORPG that made MMORPG .
Anarchy Online (the orginal is FREE monthly, there are like 3 expansions tho)

I accidently posted this on a new thread lol.
SWG preCU for sure!
Nothing beats it, and nothing ever will (though I hope one does!).
QFT. Pre-CU SWG was so far ahead of anything out there at the time and was a much more ambitious and in-depth experience than any of the current cookie-cutter POS MMO's that are on the market at the moment. With the current trend in MMO's I cant see anything coming close to the fun that could be had in Pre-CU SWG for a looong time, which is very unfortunate IMHO.
MMORPG History:
Playing - EVE Online.
Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion.
Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9).
Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.
There's no question that DAoC was the best pre-WoW game. I can't say I've ever found an MMO that comes close to being as fun (RvR, etc.) since...
I think I'll check out DAoC just for fun. Looks like there is a lot of expansion packs. And lots and lots of classes.
Definitely DAOC hands down.
eq1
Hands down Asheron's Call for me.
Everquest was probably the most popular MMO before WoW. It was D&D without the license. The clases so closely followed 2nd edition D&D it could be plagery. It was a lot of fun at the time as it was something new. No one had done a D&D style MMO yet. Ultima wasn't really a D&D style MMO. DOAC and AC1 came after it and both had their popularity, but never as much as EQ in my opinion.
Pre-CU SWG! Nothing ever came close to that!
Back then I would have said AO since I think DAoC was point and click, they fixed that though so now its a toss up. Exploring was more fun as I remember in AO, plus now its free. Turns into a major grind after lvl200. I liked the different classes in DAoC, but I remember some RvR imbalances. Ah the days of mudding.

While the thread's title implies a consensus agreement where none exists I'll dance.
1) EQ1 pre GOD (PVE)
2) DAOC (RVR)
Dutchess Zarraa Voltayre
Reborn/Zero Sum/Ancient Legacy/Jagged Legion/Feared/Nuke & Pave.
EvE for me as it did come out a few months before WoW.
UO
Nothing could compare to it and everything (even WoW) exists because of it. It defined the genre.
"My Fantasy is having two men at once...
One Cooking and One Cleaning!"
---------------------------
"A good man can make you feel sexy,
strong and able to take on the whole world...
oh sorry...that's wine...wine does that..."
Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot. They were the games that defined the future of MMOs, that set the rules for the new generation. And look at that, those two companies again step into a stale market where nothing new is happening with two new products. And they will probably redefine what can be done in MMOs once again.

This is you.
I'd like to put in a vote for FFXI. Better graphics than DAoC (even with the graphics revamp), great sound, great music, deep, interesting game play in several areas and (for me) a satisfying emphasis on grouping. (Even if avoiding the Imps in Caedarva Mire to finish the #$@% mission I'm on right now is giving me an ulcer...:-)

I would have to say UO hands down. I have not found anything that is remotely close to as fun as that was in it's prime. Everything was ruined in the game once AoS came out. It's just like the Pre-CU SWG days. Now it makes me really sad what UO has become now. Can't stand the game now.
Edit: I would still be playing if it wasn't for AoS.
pre cu swg seems to be popular still
AC and Ryzom.
AC for the [almost] monthly events
Ryzom for the sandbox, environment, and skill-based "leveling"

Wtf? Anarchy Online was NOT the original MMORPG....
And to the OP: EQ1 definitely.
Pre Cu swg will always be my favorite, one day I hope they make pre cu servers ( I will not count on it though). I also loved daoc for the rvr aspect .
Best pre WoW game?
