ok, i played silkroad for a while, but the community there is really, really, really, really, really bad, and there are a lot of programming problems.
can anyone recommend a similar -free- game that has a community that's not absolutely horrible and isn't so hard to get to work?

Well, depending upon your system specs, I would suggest checking out Rappelz. When I first started it reminded me a lot of Silkroad, but in actuality it has MANY differences. The biggest difference is probably Rappelz' endgame isn't a pointless day to day routine of pvp'ing or trading.
Anyways, give it a try. The graphics can take a bit out of you though.
You could also try Last Chaos, or any of galanet's mmos,.
