This has got to be one of the most entertaining news stories I have seen in a while.
VENICE, Florida (AP) -- A man who lost his ball in a golf course pond nearly lost a limb when a nearly 11-foot alligator latched on to his arm and pulled him in the water, authorities said.
Bruce Burger, 50, was trying to retrieve his ball Monday from a pond on the sixth hole at the Lake Venice Golf Club.
The alligator latched on to Burger's right forearm and pulled him in the pond, said Gary Morse, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Burger used his left arm to beat the reptile until it freed him.
"I saw him reach down to get his ball and he yelled" for help, said Janet Pallo, who was playing the fifth hole and ran over to drive the man to the clubhouse.
Burger, from Lenoir City, Tennessee, was taken to a hospital but was not seriously injured, Morse said Tuesday.
It took seven Fish and Wildlife officers an hour to trap the one-eyed alligator, which measured 10 feet, 11 inches, Morse said.
The pond at the sixth hole has a "Beware of Alligator" sign.
"Unfortunately, that's part of Florida," course general manager Rod Parry said. "There's wildlife in these ponds."
How is the title not: HUNGRY ALLIGATOR TAKES BITE OF BURGER

Carl Weathers is clutching his hand terrified somewhere....
I almost called shenanigans on this, but I guess it's real. I'll just wait for the now retired Bob Barker to start laying down whoopings on random celebrities.
He beat an 11 foot alligator with his left arm untill it let him go? Right... I find it much more likely something else came up. whacking at a gators head one handed is a bit like shooting a .22 at a tank.

It's not that far fetched. Gators mostly kill by dragging things into the water and drowning them. Their jaws can do alot of damage, but they're not indestructable. If it latched on and it's teeth didn't pierce any critical blood vessels, it could have been beaten off. If it couldn't drag the man into the water to death-roll him, he had a good chance at beating it off. The gator isn't stupid, it's got nothing to gain sitting there biting something, exposed out of the water, while it punches him.
It just said that it did succeed in dragging the fellow into the pond, and remember that this is a 50 year old man, not some youth fresh from the gym

Oh dear, must have glanced over that. You're right, it did get him in water. Still, if you put up enough fight a gator will often let go. It's possible to hurt one, badly, with your bare hands. If you took your bare palm and slapped one on the side of its head as hard as you could it would hurt it. People have fought free of gators before, frequently. I hear about it alot living in South Florida.
A bit off topic, did you know you can rubber band their jaws shut? All the muscles are there to shut it hard, but not so much to open it.
im sorry man but just becasue this is so close to a movie about juvinile humor i just have to say. "HUH HUH he said beat it off" ok my juvinile humor moment has passed on with the thread.

<sigh> I honestly didn't mean to type it like that. :P
What have we learned from this topic: Golf is dangerous. And those who organize golf courses doesn't want any "wildlife" to exist on them.

Somewhere, this thread went horribly horribly astray...Honestly I was expecting the next post after this to say something about Chubbs....
