I realize this will draw lots of fire here. But I'm tired of seeing all the negative SOE posts by people acting like they know something.
SOE isn't going to have any say in the creative development of the game. They're just doing billing, release, etc.
Get off the SOE-hate bandwagon. It's baseless and wannabe elitist.
I'm looking forward to this game. If there's anything I don't like about the content of the game, I won't be lazy and blame it on SOE. They won't have anything to do with it.

I lost ALL my professions in SWG with the NGE, I was pissed about many things SOE did with SWG.
But thats that PAST, and SOE is only publisher of Pirates anyway!
Be rational. See the game for yourself. Make your OWN judgement, based on what you see for YOURSELF, and dont follow other peoples opinions or mere prejudice!
Give Pirates a fair chance! You want to be judged fairly so do that to other people's work as well.
Pirates looks like a damn good game. Please don't ruin it for us, because you had troubles in the past you have not resolved. If you decided never to have buisiness with SOE, fine, but dont spill hate here over and over, and leave the community board in peace to those that want to discuss the acutal game!

Well, I think that would depend on why you went to the Better Business Bereau. If you went to them for any of the same reasons most of the "SWG veterans" bitch and whine about on a daily basis, then I would say that it is baseless. Not to mention, super lame, and the folks at the Better Business Bereau probably had a good laugh after reading your letter, taking your call, or whatever you did. Your bad experience in playing a damn video game is not going to be very high on their list of give-a-shits. Now, if you had a legitimate complaint against them, then by all means, call, write, email, or pay the BBB a visit in person and complain away. Not that the BBB could do much about it. All they really do is write reviews about a company's customer satisfaction. Personally, if I go to play a video game, I'm not gonna go and look up the game's publisher with the BBB first. Anyway, in any online game's disclosures, it says "Game experience may change during online play" or something to that effect. If SOE went and changed the difficulty of becoming a wookie-jedi or something queer like that, and Obi-Wannabe is sitting around waisting their time bitching and whining (for years afterward in a lot of cases) about it, their complaints are still baseless. Seriously, get over it, and your will be that much better.

SOE are not the perfect people you make them out to be, nor are all of the claims baseless, as you so think. Is there a great deal of people complaining to just complain? YUP
Are there also VALID reasons why people think SOE is not the best choice of companies to choose from? YUP
Ok, my 2 cents:
Played SWG as hardcore as anyone. Had multiple accounts, created a guild, a city and it became part of everyday. Hell, I still talk to people I met in the game years ago and we game together still (in other games).
The game had bugs, the game needed fixes. SOE stated they would fix this, balance that, but it never happened; to this day there are still things in game that are broken and never got fixed. Well, we can all live with a few bugs or glitches if the game is fun, right?
Well, SOE took the fun out of the game by changing everything and snubbing their noses at the people that made the game what it was. They replaced the fun with some god-awful thing that was no longer the game we had all come to know and love. So now you have bugs, glitches and no fun (at least no fun to the people that were playing the original game-so flamers dont start with how wonderful it is now).
So, like most people, I cancelled my accounts. Time to move on, find another game and have fun. Well, game is cancelled, got the cancellation e-mails and all is good. Next month's credit card bill comes in and there is a charge for the game. I'm thinking that its just a mistake and contact SOE. Well, I get the blah, blah, blah, we are sorry, we will fix it, please forward the e-mails.........basic stuff.
Next month comes, no credit to the account and yet another charge. I call SOE again, same thing. Sorry for the confusion, we are on top of it, blah, blah, blah. I give it another 2 weeks and still no credit to the charge card. I call the credit card company, explain the situation and do a charge back. I dont think of it again. Im out that first month's charge, but, what can ya do. I should have done the charge back earlier, silly me for thinking that SOE would hold up to their end of the bargain.
Jump ahead to about 2 months ago. A few friends say, 'hey lets re-activate our old SWG toons on the free trial thing and give it a go'. SO we do. I got called out to an out of state job so I really didnt get a chance to use the 14 day trial thing and decide to just up for a month. I cant re-sub my old toons.....odd, I think. The other guys didnt have any trouble activating the old toons, why am I?
I call SOE, they tell me they cant do anything over the phone that all of those types of customer service and billing related inquiries are handled through e-mail only. So, off goes the e-mail about my problem. 3 day later, I get the reply asking me about 15-20 questions regarding the old account-things like what card did I use, what was the account number, when was the last time I played-I mean are you kidding me? Like I remember what card, what account blah blah blah. Anyhow, I answer it as best I can and reply to the e-mail. This time it takes a week to get a reply and I was told that I can not open my accounts because there was a charge back to that particular account, (actually both toons), and in order to re-sub I have to pay that charge back. SOOOO $OE is going to get that damn second month out of me yet that I should not have been charged for in the first place. So I send yet another e-mail asking how much is the charge back. now here is the kicker---------the reply was $149.99!
My reply was WTF are you people smoking? (well, not exactly that but you get the drift). The reply back, again 3 days later was; the account was originally set up on a one year sub and in order to reactivate, I would have to pay $149.99 to bring the account current, then what ever I wanted to pay AFTER THAT to play the game again. I reply that the last 6 months (not including the 2 months they should not have charged me for), were on a month to month basis, not a full year sub. The reply I got was basically, too bad, so sad, pay us $149.99 or dont play the game. My reply was simply, "good job, you have now lost me for a second and final time. Have a wonderful day, dumbass".
So, does that answer you question on why $OE lost me?
Forget what they did to the game I loved, its the back end office, the supposed customer care, billing and player support that is so lacking
Well I for one will probably take a look, as I have no real problem with SOE, sure the odd account issue while playing EQ2, but nothing I haven't had with any other MMO publisher.
People love to bring up SWG as an example of SOE's evilness but I see that as much a problem with LA as much as SOE - which btw I hate LA these days despite it formerly being my favourite publisher. I have read that the NGE was mainly a product of the imaginitive minds of LA, and I believe it because of some of the crap they spawn recently.
Then Vanguard was a sinking ship to begin with from all indications, and is more telling of an extremely bad decision by SOE's aquisition department then the company itself.
In other words I think their is a fair bit of reactionist hate against SOE some warranted others not so, and is more a result of people following the mob as sheep then any real opinion.
(that last bit isn't meant to flame, as I couldn't find a better way to put it )

ok so Rick says that soe won't have any say in the game itself ..thats cool but soe as a handler for billing ?? that makes me shudder .I dont particularly care who or what soe is ,but I have delt with them .Getting your release from a account with them takes ages ..trying to get anyone to listen to you takes longer (played EQ2 and VG) They claim they have saved VG ?? how ?? I logged into that game and its still the same ..fixed it ? nope and to get out of it took me a week (learnt from the first time which took me 1 month ) I have given this company my time and money enough ,I just dont trust them and seeing that they will handle my billing for a game I am dying to play ..well ...

I completely agree with you....SOE had nothing to do with the games creation. Let go of the hate..everyone makes mistakes.
You know all this hate seems to be comming from the SWG crowd...they changed the game, the messed up everything, they took my stuff away...Gee where did I hear this before...OH yeah from the game I just left. Eve-online. Not to mention the constant BS comming from a certing alliance that cant fight a better alliance.
All the crap, CCP is doing now to Eve is "Not what I started playing" four years ago. I lost billions in future revenue, caused by a last minute change in patches....I along with 2000 others made eve what it is today....but nobody asked us the 'veterens' if we wanted to walk on stations....or even have a crew...after all in 2003 we all KNEW we were pod pilots surgically inplanted in that pod, never to leave again...
No you SOE haters, you aint alone in the MMO world, but your not mature enough to see, it was'nt your game, you did not own it, and you were free to leave anytime you wanted to.

My reasons for not wanting to give a penny to SOE has nothing to do with how they changed SWG or EQ2 or whatever. It has to do with how *I* was treated as a paying CUSTOMER. I have never dealt with a company that had such poor customer service, rude community managers and blatently ignoring customer's complaints and problems.
If people choose to do business with them, that's their choice. I also have a choice not to do business with them because I feel they do not have the customer's best interests at hand.
I treat SOE just like any other business. If I don't feel satisfied with their service, I go elsewhere... just like any other consumer would do if they felt my business didn't satisfy them.

You know what is baseless? Assuming why someone has an issue with $OE. For the record, I never played SWG, nor did alot folks.
Mastaccoli: I feel your pain. I had a similar issue arise with my sub in VG. In EQ 2 though I couldnt access my guild forums for over 8 months - probalby still cannot. They not only didnt fix it but deleted my inquiries and complaints, yelled at me, and ignored me for around 6 months. Then I get a letter from a manager saying "sorry - this just came across my desk, I am appalled at how tech support treated you" a few months later. The acknowledgement was actually nice but was too little to late.
We will see what happens...
There is a very big difference between being personally distrustful of the company and the rampant SOE bashing that goes on within these forums. I find it ironic how Lucas Arts came away from the whole SWG debacle relatively unscathed even though they played a massive part in its downfall, I can only guess its a blinkered 'George Lucas can do no wrong' view that certain people have when in reality it is completely the opposite (Episodes 1-3 for example).
I played SWG for a long time and was let down by SOE and Lucas Arts (they are just as guilty of the failures in SWG) with almost every change they made, but I am mature enough to accept that SOE have learnt from their mistakes and are trying to avoid making them again. Whats even worse is that this irrational hatred is being levelled against an MMO that is merely being published by SOE ... its like seeing a crap movie at the cinema and then deciding that you will never watch another movie that is shown at that cinema ...

And that's exactly why I don't send my money SOE's way anymore either. If I am not happy with a businesses services why in the world would I choose to purchase a product of theirs.. Even if they are "just" the publisher (for now). I still choose not to do business with them in any way. I will spend my money at companies I prefer to do business with.

I love how every time a large number of people can agree on something, people immediately try to claim it's all falsity and just everyone "following" or "jumping on the bandwagon." SoE has screwed up countless games, and has a long and rich history of treating their customers like garbage. It's not just "popular" to hate SoE, there are plenty of people that have more than good reason to feel the way they do.

SOE is not fine. They have lost sight of the fact that they are entertainment company. They treat players as adversaries instead of customers.
That's not the problem, because the way people feel about Sony is from games Sony ran, like SWG and EQ2. This is a different story.
The problem is that people see "SOE" and "POTBS" in one sentence and immediately think it's Doomsday. Even worse, people go one step further and stick a "Vanguard" in there just to have an excuse to bash Sony.
Nobody's really taking a look at it.
In fact, Sony's involvement is the best thing that ever happened to Flying Labs in terms of the mainsteam exposure it stands to get, cause I can definitely say a game that runs only off of digital downloads would simply never take off. The involvement gives the company its best chance to succeed on a more mainstream level. And the deal was only possible because Sony gave them the only deal they found reasonable.
No, the "SOE Haters" reasoning is not fundamentally *wrong* -- but it's very incorrectly applied to POTBS, and *that* is what this thread was addressing.
You assume that people upset about the SOE/POTBS connection are worried that SOE is going to somehow ruin POTBS. I think the bigger issue is that people have been burned by SOE and don't want to pay for a game that is going to financially benefit SOE.
