A loose and quick review on content between the two...
PotCO is based on the fantasy world created in the movies. Somewhat cartoony feeling from the screenshots. Not much to say. From all of what I've read it seems really similar to the console games, only you make your own character, put your role in, and are not chained down by endless missions and objectives. Also ATM you can only be a pirate which has been a big turn off for the PotBS community. (Opinion) Games seems rushed (Guranteed to be delayed release, I doubt it will release in '07). Id be surpised if there is much depth at all in avatar combat or sea combat but it still seems promising and I am looking forward to comparing the two games. Also it seems to be targeting a younger crowd, but I survived through WoW I can handle a Disney MMO.
PotBS is on the line of Historical game (FLS has said its not 100% accurate nor is it suppose to be) in development since 2003, title release was actually before the first PotC movie release in July so please don't spam its a rip-off. Unlike PotCO you can pick between being a Pirate, British, French, or Spanish captain, and in those factions are different roles like merchants/shipwrights ect. What seems to be the recent turn off is they have signed with SOE for the publishment deal. FLS still has 100% development rights, SOE just deals with distribution, launching, and billing. ATM it looks like an October release but could change. (Opinion) really looks like a highly polished game and I've def been looking forward to it.
Both games in either case look decent. I didnt write much on PotCO because its as simple, you want to get the movie experiance and love the pirates triology PotCO is for you it seems. You a history buff and would love to live the carribean life of the 1720s PotBS is for you. Honestly, reading up on both these games, glancing over screenshots, reading forums/fan forums PotBS just seems like the better game, visually, content, and community wise. But SWG did very very very well for a movie-based MMO before NGE, but they seem to be building a new community. LotRO is much as I regret to say is doing very well, and Star Trek Online for not liking Star Trek at all looks fairly decent and promising. Lets just see if PotCO can live up to this new movie mmo generation.
As much as I'd like to see PotC do well, I gotta go with PotBS here. It just looks more interesting and re-playable.
I'll be watching both though, to see if I change my mind. Always open to it. If it's close, I may buy both and play for a few months until I have a preference.
I am in the PotC beta and while I will probably go to PotBS there are some things I like about PoTC.
1. The ship to ship combat is quite good. What I like most is you aren't fully in charge of your entire ship. If you are driving it then you are driving it and you need to hire crew to man the cannons, etc. This is a major plus in my opinion. I don't know if PoTC is like this or if it is more like Eve where no matter how big a ship you have you control the whole thing.
2. The melee combat "feels" different then most. Instead of picking powers in a hot bar you right click and a power wheel pops up. Depending on your skills you can select one or even select more then one to combo. Fighting isn't automatic like most games. If you click attack and stand there you don't auto attack. You have to click to swing. Depending on your skills and your timing if you click again at the right time you will turn it into a combo swing. If you have enough skill in melee fighting you can actually combo it out many times.
At this moment what I don't like...
1. The graphics are SO cartoonish. This is a big turn off for me. And I thought wow looked cartoonish. This one takes the cake. Its like toon town online with pirates.
2. Lack of quests. I know it is beta but there is quite a lack of quests
3. LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAG! Lag is common in most MMOs, specially betas....but when its so bad you don't even want to beta test...that is where I draw the line.
Starting out: provides good optional tutorial. If you don't got hrough the tutorial though you miss out on the following- Free ship, Beginner sword, beginner pistol. If you are stating a new account you can easily buy them so you don't have to do the turtorial all over again. 6/10 wonder why the 6/10? see below.
Quests: There aren't very many quests if you don't do the first quest. It's basically feels like a xbox game with other people playing at the same time because you can only follow that one string. There are other easy almost availible everywhere quests which earn you ten gold. Gaining levels also unlock more quests 6/10. if you follow the first quest line, it's a 9/10 though.
Combat vs. CPU Land : Better then Runescape Battles, worse then WoW. You have control over when you attack by clicking, and can use speicial moves by right clicking then clicking symbol with left click. Worst part is diffuculty of getting thee specials off in a quick amount of time. Leveling up in combat will provide more weapons with more advantages and more skills.8/10
Weapons: The game's main faltering point besides lack of quests is this. There are three portable weapon systems, with three classes. That makes 9 total weapons. Swords: Rusty, Steel, or Iron Cutlass. Pistol: Single, double, or triple barrel. Voodoo: Don't actually know three classes. Runesape offers a better weapon system then this.Higher classes offer little advantages, other then pistols, which let you fire more bullets before reloading. 3/10
Graphics: Cartoony, but not completely horrible. Compared to runescape, these graphics are godly.7/10
Character Designing: Gives a lot of control over facial features but all body shapes and figures look odd. Needs more clothes and Hairstyles. Picking a name is odd because you can pick a name from the lists andyou can type in own names to bbe used but most are turned down for reasons unknown to me. They turned down Horatio Nelson. 6/10 because of charachter body type options stink.
Getting Around: Can use three ways: Walk, Sail, or Transport. Walking is fine, Sailing takes a little while. I think lengthy sail times is why they provided teleportation. I feel glad about having a way to get around fast but it all feels like cheating. 7/10
Sailing: You can get nine ship choices. The main categories are Sloop, Galleon, and Frigate. Then they have light, regular, and war sub categories. Ship advantages are good including more cannons, room for crew, and speed. 8/10
Cpu sea combat: Great! Can get a large crew member and fight ships to gain cargo, experiance, and money. If you only have your self there's nothing wrong with running from helm to cannon. Getting a crew f other players is fun, and the crew ca shoot the cannons. 9/10
PVP Battles: Sorry I haven't tested this. PVP is a lot of times the make or break of a game so I hope it's good.?/10
Level Gaining: Only skills to gain levels on are sword, pistol, cannon, sailing, and voodoo. This game does not offer some great non-combat skills that can be done. They really ant to focus on being a pirate. You main level is called Notoriety and the main way to level this up is to complete quests, which are hard to find if you don't do the first quest line. Gaining levels on combat skills is fun and offers rewards, however little. Like buying better sword or ship. Main rewards are learning skills like double shot or sword hack combo and more damage.Combat: 8/10, non combat: 0/10
Making Money: Main way is to sail around on a crew and kill ships. And doing quests. Otherwise money is hard to get. Hint: Get good at cannoning or sailing, because more captains or crew members will want to employ, or be employed by you. 7/0, because making money leads back to being a pirate.
Speed: Certainly is not laggy for my computer. You need a fast connection to be lag-free. No rating Necessary, depends on your computer.
It's only in beta, so I hope they improve it. Overall: 6 or 7/10 Fun at first with being a pirate and all but will lose interest later on.
Potco seems more geared towards fans of the movie (well , duh) Potbs seems more focused on people that could be MMO veterans, movie tie-in games (usually) don't do very well, so I would say go for potbs, that is what I am thinking of playing.
