I bought Vanguard today!

blondehblondeh Member UncommonPosts: 540

Hello fellow mmorpg gamers.

Well I'm a little bored while waiting for Vanguard to update. Thought I'd make a little topic.

Even with all the bad press I've decided to try it out. I remember when SwG was released majorly unfinished. It had its fair share of bad press. Credit duping, game breaking bugs, peformance issues etc.  Hell I put off buying the game because of it.. and guess what? In Novemeber 2004 I bought it bugs n all and I loved it!

My 1st MMO was planetside then WoW beta. I bought SwG and had a blast. Infact SWG PRE-CU was so much fun even with the lack of anything that was considered end game content (except becoming a jedi). I was devestated when the Cu hit and tried the NGE. I never really found a MMO I enjoyed as much since. Tried EvE, SoR, WoW, CoV, GW, EQ2, Matrix Online, and now I play LOTRO. But I still cant get myself immersed like i did SWG. I'm bored of levelng and being a clone of the next guy. I'm bored with the lack of choices I can make in an MMO. They dont feel like virtual worlds. Feel like I'm being spoon fed. I dont feel like I'm exploring a far off land.

I'm getting sidetracked. Anyway the thing that interested me in Vanguard was the amount of races and classes. The world looks huge and I hope its not as bad as everyone says it is. I know its not gonna be SwG Pre-CU but I'm pretty sure it isnt gonna be a WoW clone which sounds very pleasing.

Welcome, I hope you enjoy.  The worst thing you might encounter is very low populations in the starter zones.  Server merges are near and will be a good thing.  Otherwsise, I love this game and the adventuring aspect of it.

I think you will enjoy Vanguard if you like SWG.

I just bought SWG days ago, and I absolutely love it! I love it so much I have offered to buy it for friends to get them to play it, but they want to stick with Vanguard. Heh.

Anyway, I am trying to play EQ 2, Vanguard, and SWG on my station pass.  I play Vanguard the most, though, primarily because most of my friends are playing it now.

Its really hard to say what another person is going to enjoy, especially when I have no clue about your gaming preferences.  I picked a month or so..but hey, you could still be there 5 years from now...who knows.....

But you are doing the best thing...trying it yourself...the only way to ever really tell.

what no option for 1-3 weeks, LOL i thought it was good, after the 1st week, after that the bug problems became soo frequent i started to get p/off. Then they would release a patch and say such and such quests have been fixed, though in reality they hadnt. This started to become really annoying and the bugged quests would start to rise, going from 1 in 3 quests working to my last count of 1 in 5 quests worked to completion (thats being kind cos i really thought it had hit a 1 in 7).

However after trhe 3rd week i couldnt care less (by this time i had cancelled my account subscription), before the 4th week had ended, i found myself not even bothering to log-in. Also there had been 2, YES, 2 double XP weekends, to keep the player base happy, can you tell me of any other game with a subscription, in its 1st 4 weeks, giving not 1, but 2 double xp weekends? I cannot think of 1 game that gave just 1 double xp weekend in its first month of release, let alone the 1st 6 mths of release. Too me this shone with a big red danger light for the game.

I left after my account ran out (which was after the 2nd double xp weekend, i did take part in the 1st weekend, but not the 2nd, cos i couldnt be bothered to log in to the game), don't know if there has been more Double xp weekends since then though.

I did put an 8mth wait to see what the game has become, but reports i have read, and reports that i was (but no longer cos those players who were adamant in staying have since left the game) reports on the game were less than favourable. At this moment i would give it another year to wait by which time this game could have died or have been re-born, but it is going to take nothing less than a miracle.

P.S - i did the same thing as you, i had heard it was good from 3 players, but at the same time alot more had said it was bad, and should not have left beta this early. I didnt listen to them, and decidedd to try it for myself. Bad mistake. From now on, i will start using teh, if i havent had a look at it first hand then i aint going to buy it. Thats either a free trial or getting into a beta stage.

SWG pre-cu was my first MMO,  I enjoyed it soo much, even with all the bugs and such.  I played it for 3 yrs straight, even tried to cope with the CU and of course like many, the NGE killed the game for me.

I too moved on to various games, my current and all time favorite being Counter-Strike 1.6 (www.motelcali.net) then I beta'd several mmo's looking for that "home" feeling.  It's hard to say  if you'll ever find THAT feeling again, but one must keep looking.  I currently dabble in WoW (mostly for my kids, but it's a nice break from time to time from CS).  I've been reading up on Pirates of the Burning Sea, looking forward to trying that out.

Back on topic, after trying DDO, the multiple asian mmo's (*gag*) and such I found Vanguard, I beta tested vanguard from Beta 3 or 4 I think and played for about a month.  The Bugs and performance issues are the reason I quit that one.  I do keep up on it and may take the game back up once SOE has been given time to do the things they have planned.  When I wasn't constantly crashing to desktop or lagging madly (my comp well exceeded the recommended stats) I loved the game, but having limited time to play I just couldn't find the reasoning to keep paying a monthly fee to spend most of my time restarting the game.

Anyway, I do hope things continue to improve for VG, and I do hope you have a great time playing.  Please share your experiences on the current state of the game and such, I am quite interested to hear a fresh perspective on the current game.

    ps.  WOOT FIRST POST!! lol

    Welcome mate.

The servers will be merging shortly, so any server you select will merge, possibly not the rp one (florendyl).  I suggest you avoid PvP servers, though. He he.  I hear that Gelenia has a good population and I think Florendyl....

I beta'd the game...and played for a month when it went live.

Personally, I don't think it's the worst MMO out, but at the same time I don't think it's worth my 15 a month.

    I hope you enjoy it!

Server mergers... bad sign. Get out now, before you waste any money there.

Well, to me the variety of races is more limited than you'd think...Each continent has an animal race 1 or 2 elf race 1 or 2 giant race 1 or 2 human race and 1 or 2 small race...It may seem like thats a lot of races but they spread it out so it looks like a lot...Only difference is their racial abilities and the looks...But if you were going to play I'd really suggest you start a race in Thestra continent because 80% of the population lives there and plays there until they reach the higher levels...I think you're going to like this game though...

If you are the kind of player interested in playing the WHOLE game....ie...crafting, harvesting, diplomacy and adventure then I think their is a good chance you will enjoy the game alot.

A majority of the posts people see here are only from the adventuring perspective and overly critical at that.

So many people forget or are unwilling to allow themselves to learn the other 90% of the game....and then sit there and wonder why VG is suppose to be considered so deep.

To really enjoy a mmorpg ...a good one..deep one ..like Vanguard..one must move beyond the realm of adventure and learn to enjoy other aspects of the game.

Get involved with the community...get to know some people...explore everything you can. If you play outside the box.....expand your horizons...I think you will be enjoying the world of Telon for a very long time to come.

I know I will. My to-do list is a mile long and getting longer. Between adventure, craft, diplomacy , harvesting, and guild activities...I NEVER have an issue with finding something to do. The only issue I have is figuring out what to do NEXT !
