the feel and style of eq 1
the oroiginal pvp of warcraft
lore that makes you compelled
tradeskills that dont feel like a 3rd job
no questing to speek of
i feell questing is whats killing mmo anymore because instead of folks getting together and grinding and getting to know one another its all about soloing quests because noone is hardly ever on same ones you are on.
battlegrounds keep me interested in wow but without changing terrain everyone figures out best way to go.
if anyone has any suggestions id love to hear them but atm i feel like wow is best product out there to play atm

eq2 i could never find anyone to just group and kill stuff

There are skill based sand box game out there. You people just need to stop being lazy and do some damn research. Here's a hint look to the left of this post. Yeah see all those links to other MMO games ? Try clicking on one of them to find out what they are all about.

Hey Sinent, I'm right there with you.
Played EQ1 forever, tried DAoC (fun on Mordred and Andred first few months), played Shadowbane, Lineage 2, AC2, COH, WoW, LOTRO and Vanguard and probably some others I can't remember now.
I was banking on Vanguard being the next great game but ... oh well, maybe one day it will have a comeback.
I agree with you 100% regarding the questing.
The best thing about EQ1 was the community. In-game and out of the game. In-game communities in MMOs are the lifeblood to their success.
If you think about MMORPGs on a basic level, the idea behind the game is to improve your character. This is typically done by leveling up and getting better equipment. People will naturally try to find the best and most efficient way to level. When a game relies to heavliy on questing for exp. all a person does is pick up the quests and rush through them as fast as they can. This means that there are no consistent groups or areas for people to fight in. Because of this, there is less time to get to know people on the server, less need to group up, and overall more solo / anti-social play.
Games like EQ1 required people to find a place with mobs and fight them to level up. People would gather at specific locations to kill monsters and they would be forced to get to know those around them. I've yet to see anything like old Orc hill outside of kelethin, the Aviaks in S. Karanas or Crushbone in any of the new games out. I can still remember other character's names that I used to fight next to in Highpass hold and Mistmore.
I seriously doubt any game will ever boast the type of community play that EQ1 created. I will never forget early saturday mornings staring at the scrolling /AUC text while sitting in the E. Commonlands tunnel. Back then it was barding and hocking goods, not just posting items on an NPC auction house and waiting for them to sell.
Granted, I do think WoW is a decent game, but overall its kind of an "easy-mode" MMORPG. If it didn't have any PvP it would be as boring as LOTRO.
Where has the sence of adventure and discovery gone. How fun is it to just run around looking for NPCs with ! above their heads and then stare at the mini-map to figure out where to go. What is the point of trying to survice when all you have to do is run back to where you died and start up again.
How can you strive to be unique when everyone else in the game has the same equipment. Its funny, but for a non PvP game (in general) EQ1 still had some good competition in-game between people, in terms of loot and equipment on your character. It didnt just have to be high-end raid gear either, it could be that rare pegasus cloak from a mob that would only spawn once a week/month, or that Shiny Metallic robe that would take hours to get.
Oh well... I guess we can't live in the past. As much good that has come from WOW bringing in millions of new players to the MMORPG market, its unfortunate that they will probably look at wow the way I look at EQ1. I don't forsee any games coming out that will bring back those things that made EQ1 great.
If you find any good game out there let me know.
*Edited for typos*
One game: Star Wars Galaxies.
Do not knock it until you've tried. I have been looking for that EQ 1 game as well, and I have found it. I could not have ever believed in a million and one light years that it would be SWG. Not kidding. Do yourself a favor, a big one, get this game for 20.00 then tell me what you think about it!

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
Ahh SWG I forgot to put that on my list under played...
Although that was before the NGE, has it chaged that mucg for the better?
Do people still play it?
