Good game?

Hi!

Well, to make a long story short ive playd mmorpgs for the lst 4-5 years and now ive come to a halt. I'm bored of most of the games i play at this time (Eve,Wow,Voyage century) and i'm kind of just holding on til Potbs or AoC hit's the market (or open beta). My questions is, is this a "fun" game? i know you'r idea of fun might not be my cup of tea at all, but, i rather have the opinions of vet's rather then all the forum trolls jidderish! Seeing as the 14-day trial is for US only, i can't do that, either:(

Another questions is, is it immersive? I do like to roleplay (well, mostly for my self, not really like being in a rp guild per say) and just wonderd if it is easy to get the "true" villain feel (or hero, if you choose to play that aspect of the game for that matter)

Over and out//

I play both CoH and CoV and have a 45 blaster so id like to consider myself a vet. This games character creation is incredible. Once you forge your own super identity your off. Everything about this game is different from all the other MMO's out there. The missions addmitingly are repetitive. But boring? Not at all in any way. I find levels 30-50 are the most fun to play but this game is just incredible. There are many solo RP'ers out there i myself am one. So you will not be alone on the RP part.

    Its definatly worth a shot!

    Just a word.

I hear the server Virtue is the unofficial RP server.  Try there first for RP.

I'm loving CoV personally, much more so than the prissy Hero side. I have a level 45 Stalker on Justice and just really enjoy playing the game. And the things I've heard about in I10 with the Invasion sound like they could be very interesting. I'd say at least give it a try. They have free trials so you aren't out anything but time if you do give it a shot.

Well I think the game is really fun, the missions do get repetive, but they are still fun. I have a lvl 50 Mastermind and a few other mid lvl villains, and working on getting a lvl 50 on CoH on the Champion server. If you have a good team the game is really fun, and if you get into a good supergroup it adds to the game alot.

By the way, where do you live? Europe? Because they have a European only  free trial on fileplanet . Here's a link if it applies to you.

Yes man it's worth a shot.  I too have played MMOs for 6+ years but I don't feel the burn out on this game.  It's fast paced fun action if you are in a big team.   The missions can be repetitve as people say,  but what MMO is not repetitve?

Side note,  if you want to play villains all the archtypes are good but I really like being a brute.  With the right build they are super powerful.

And just for the record, that link doesn't work, even if you "fix" it..

I am a 15 mnth vet the game is always changeing and adding new flavor i have 3 50's and close to 40 toons all active. Graphics are sick in my opinion so lifelike it hurts sometimes and with I9 you can really differ yourself from other char with similiar builds and if you are into rp the virtue is definatly the spot for you.

I love the CoH/CoV mmorpgs...although I can't ever stay playing for too long. I'll normally play for a few months, then play something else for awhile. But I always come back. I've played since beta CoH...and although I get burnt out from time to time it's always the first game I think of when I am bored and want to have some fun destroying everything.  :)

Edit: About the immersion...I think the Heroes side is a little more immersive then Villians. Although my favorite side is the Villains,I don't feel they did all that great of a job making you feel like a big bad evil mastermind.

I agree...the coh content is alot better then the cov content meaning this is much more content..there are many different directions you can go in coh but cov is the same path.

From the point of view of someone who believe in unlimited levels...(and in a level on every zone, such as we see in the PvP zones)

Yeah, the best MMO out there, or the least bad.  Of course I want more levels.  But I can settle with the game as is...when the nerfs don't aggro me...or the balance between some sets in PvE.

I play for PVP. COX is great fast paced PVP

  • sgtbozsgtboz Member Posts: 14

I'm an MMORPG vagabond, playing something different every 3 months or so.  CO(X) keeps me coming back.

    Pros:

Best character customization in the industry.  Get exactly the look you want, from level 1.  There are many additional items to get later too.

Easiest "older" mmo to break into.  Teams are extremely easy to get on at lower levels and fairly easy at higher levels too.  There's no shortage of players spread across the level range.

Fast-paced combat.  The higher level you get, the more combat options available.  It's as active a combat interface as I've seen in an rpg.

    Cons:

Crafting - An "invention" system was recently added that gave some limited crafting to the game.  Someone looking to be a pure crafter will not  be satisfied with this.

Sameness of missions - The mission instances look great, but become same-old same-old after you've played several months.

Depth - This is a pretty shallow, go barsh stuff, game.

I am in the same situation as you and gave COx a shot recently. I thought the character creation was outstanding. I like alot about the game but I got bored very fast. It was definately the missions that did it for me. It just seemed like the same exact thing over and over. Yes all mmo's are somewhat repetitive, COX missions though seemed more so.  Enter mission, kill everything inside which  are basicly just bunches of the same mobs, rinse , repeat. Granted I did not play to higher levels, but the cool characters just wasnt enough to keep me going. Something about the graphics engine was odd to me as well, not bad or anything, just seemed less polished. I hope you have a better experience than me...I might have missed something, but I did give it a go.

They both loose their luster around level 30.

  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726

I disagree with the post 30 comment. That's when the game really became enjoyable for my Stalker.

Really? I have a level 33 EM/NIN and the repetitive missions usually start killing me slowly around that time. Btw, it shouldn't matter what character you do it with..

Just want to expand on a couple things.

First, as sgtboz says, teaming is usually very easy and quick.  Unless you're looking at a time when very few people are on, you're almost always going to find 2 or 3 folks who will join you.  Plus, the sidekick (hero) and lackey (villain) systems mean that even with a massive level difference, folks can still team up.  Last thing on teams, one thing I always enjoyed about CoX is the fact that no one class is indispensable.  It's technically possible to have a full team of tanks (no pure "healers") and, if everyone plays smart, survive the mission with no deaths.

As far as the game losing its attraction after level 30, well that just sounds like a lack of perseverence.  Unlike some games, you don't get to the level cap in CoX by just showing up.  Sure, everyone and their brother can get a character to 10 in a couple hours, but at the higher levels your progression is going to slow down.

Editing this a bit, I'm not slamming you Thunder_Head, at least I don't mean to sound like it.  I'll agree with you on the repetitive nature of the missions.  That's why I play quite a few alts, and take a break from my main.  Even now that he's 50 and I love how powerful he is, I have to get some variety.

  • Thunder_HeadThunder_Head Member Posts: 304

I'm not saying variety is bad, heck I tried that myself when I played it....but quite honestly, when you do it enough, making a new character just doesn't do it for me anymore. I just feel like this game forces me to make it enjoyable, and i don't really favor that. :P

Fair enough.  For full disclosure, I've left CoX a couple times, but it's the game I'm playing now and if and when I get bored of PotBS (next one I'll be playing, when it releases that is), you can bet I'll dust off my leather jacket and whistle for a few thugs to come and help me whip some ass.

  • Thunder_HeadThunder_Head Member Posts: 304

It is a good game to come back too, but I personally burn out too fast. And with WAR, AoC, and Tabula Rasa coming out....I don't think I'll be doing it anymore.

As I posted earlier I agree 100%. It truly is a shame that alot of people don't get into the longer lvl's. And not just with a stalker a fire/dark cor is crazy fun in the deep 30's and early 40's. I have yet to find pvp I like in any mmo and even though I love cov/coh I'm not crazy with the pvp It normally turns into a inspire poping ho down that ends in frustration because  you almost kill someone and he pops 4 purps and rips you apart. I would like to see a inspire free pvp zone in coh/cov then i think I would be completely satisfied also if RV was like warbug a free for all.

Just a brief comment on MMORPG.com- I love posting here I wish I had been posting here for a longtime this is a great community. With that said I am new to xfire and I'm getting blind invites from people on this site please mention mmorpg when you send a friend invite thx.

If anyone needs anything regarding cox please feel free to email me I run both side's of freedom and would love to help anyone out with freetrials and a good group to play with :)

Im going to get my hands on this game soon, and ive been going through these forums, ive noticed the one thing that most of the threads fail to elaborate on is the customization system in CoV, now since this games primary focus is on super villains/heroes and characters themed as such, im guessing it wont have the conventional item drops, how does it all work? i mean, if you completely design your character from scratch, then wont something like a "chest plate" dropping ruin all of that? or is there something im missing? other than that, im not hearing many good things about the PvP, i personally lean more towards the villainous aspect of most games keeping in mind that the majority of people prefer the good guys, theres always too many good guys, so yeah, all in all, how does the character customization work, is there a looting, item drop system and whats the pvp like?

Thats quite a mouthful but please, enlighten me.

    And then, there was silence..

Your item drops are in the forms of enhancements, inspirations, salvage, and recipes.

    • Enhancements help increase your powers.
    • Inspirations are temporary buffs to either damage or accuracy, etc...
    • Salvage are parts and pieces you pick up that you can use to craft player made enhancments.
    • A recipe is the building block of anything player made.

I have not played much PvP, so I am not qualified to give you my opinion of it.  As far as character customization goes, its whatever you make it to be.  As far as costumes go, you can do just about anything, and use tailors to make changes in exchange for currency.  But generally speaking, with the exception of recipes, anything you pick up along the way from mobs isn't equipable in terms of costume appearance.  Everything you pick up will go towards making items or tweaking your powers.  The enhancements that are player crafted are expensive, but powerful and can really set you appart from others.  Also with the ability to add multiple slots to powers, you can tweak your powers just about any which way.

My best suggestion is to just pick up the trial, and give it a try.  Thats what I did with CoH long ago, and I have played it off and on since.

  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726

Going a bit deeper into the inventions mentioned by Souvec, yes they are more expensive. There is a reason for this though. Traditional enhancements degrade as you level, forcing you to have to replace them every few levels. With the Invention Origin enhancements, they don't degrade as you level up. The value always stays the same, so you end up spending less overall as you don't have to constantly upgrade every couple levels to keep the same effectiveness. A level 30 IO is roughly equivalent in bonuses to a level 50 Single Origin Enhancement. (SO was the best, easily obtainable enhancement for characters.) A level 30 character can't use level 20 SOs and get any kind of benefit. However, if that same character had level 20 IOs, they would still get the bonus until they had enough Inf (Influence Hero side, Infamy Villain side) to be able to replace those with level 30 IOs. And when you equip those level 30 IOs, you are getting the same kind of numerical bonus as if they were level 50 SOs.

I love Issue 9. I'm very easily soloing even level Elite Bosses (+2 con level, hit really hard), including Positron, Manticore, Citadel, Swan, and numerous others. I can reliably solo +3 bosses as well as long as they don't have insane Lethal resists like Freakshow tanks, though I haven't run into any Freakshow since moving to Grandville at level 41. I really enjoy CoV. Yes, I don't have as much content as the Hero side. But for me, it's a lot more enjoyable.
