    Bael'Zharon from Asheron's Call.

WoW did a great job with boss mobs as long as they weren't using recycled trash mob textures. Ragnaros was one of my favorites, although the rest of the Molten Core bosses (and the Blackwing Lair bosses too, for that matter) were just recolored skins from normal mobs.

    Ragnaros was definetly badass.

He pretty much looked exactly like a blown up version of the larger WC3 fire elementals.

Patchwerk and the Four Horsemen from WoW

Hah, I thought about it and instantly came up with Bael Zharon from Asheron's Call 1. And then I saw I wasn't the only one.

I ended up a rotting corpse in his lair more than once, and that was in a MMORPG that didn't have corpse dragging or rezzing. So you tend to remember!

Yeah, a bit, but at least they gave him that wicked hammer.

Neocron doesn't really have bosses..but huge mobs and there are some mobs that are truly terrifying. Especially with the latest version of neocron..Neocron 2 and Neocron 2: Evolution.

First encounter I had with a Warbot Titan (gigantic terminator-like machines that have lasers and rockets that fuck you up sideways ten times), I nearly shat myself. No other game has given me the extreme "holy shit im going to die" feeling that Neocron gave me. That and Asherons Call 1.

maybe a little old school for some of you, but you guys don't know what fear is, until you go to the third level of Despise, explore it a little, and then all of a sudden you hear a dragon roaring, and soon after, a fireball wizzing towards you.    I never ran so fast in my life, in any MMO.

as for new mmo's.. i dont think we have the technology yet to have boss monsters that actually get my heart pumping.  there was an nvidia demo at one point showing off what game designers COULD do with their card,  it was a cave type place with a dragon sitting in the middle, and just watching it gave me shivers, it looked REAL lol..  I want video game designers to make boss monsters HARD, every fight should NOT be the same, im sick of bosses like in WOW and EQ where dragons just sit there while 40 people wail on it.  it should blow fire, spit fireballs, slash you with it's tail, fly around and swoop at your, knock you down with it's tail, or maybe impale you.. dragons should be fierce and wield EXTREME TREASURE, yet you should have a really, extremely hard time defeating it. every fight with it should be different and challenging.

but, like i said, i dont think we are there technologically.

    here are a few:

some of the big baddies in GW....and  the main guy in Carpe Diem/Cardinal Saga...hmm...also, outside of MMORPGs, some of the bosses in Gauntlet Seven Sorrows seemed evil enough, hehe

EDIT: not really threatening but the beholder thing with all the eyes that was from D&D has always creeped me out...some MMOs have really creepy looking zombie and dragon bosses, too

And what bosses look really cool in Guild Wars? Need names..

Innoruuk from the Plane of Hate. Cazic Thule from the Plane of Fear. Bertoxxulous from the Plane of Disease. Legion from Darkness Falls. Phinigel Autropos from Kedge Keep. Lots more names I could toss out, but I don't have all day to look them up. They just don't make NPCs like they used to.

Well, LOTRO does have a few nasty characters like Ivar the Bloodhand and Skorgrim the father of the Dourhand dwarves (this is actually the alliance of three or so dwarf clans, oddly....), which are down right vicious in their design, and annoying to fight in their instances. :/

C'thun from Ahn'Qiraj in World of Warcraft. Imagine a mass of tentacles and eyeball stalks that shoots death ray at you.

Doc Vahz from CoH is a great villian.

your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

  • I am surprised anyone put anything from WoW in this thread.  Nothing from anything in the Warcraft series ever struck me as "evil".  Its all so white bread.  I can understand liking some of the bosses, but compared to the truly sinister stuff from just about any other source they just are not that evil or threatening or anything.

I mean compare the completely insane, completely corrupt, completely bloodthirsty Chaos gods and followers of Warhammer and then compare to Warcraft (which is based on Warhammer).  Warcraft is one of the most vanilla-ized IPs around.  The demons of warcraft are such a pale and mundane version of Chaos that its sad.  I

Note: I am not critizing Warcraft for being unoriginal.  The Chaos of Warhammer is heavily influenced by Michael Moorcock.  Warhammer is basically Tolkein meets Moorcock.  So whatever.  Warcraft mythology is simply white bread and stilted that is it.

    Ooo good post!

Trakanon from EQ1 -- zombie dragon in the bottom of a huge dungeon FTW!

    Rallos Zek from EQ1

Legion from DAOC (I forgot about him, great villian!)

This is also very much why I only included pretty much old games in my list. The bosses were much more sinister and evil. However, you do have to remember that for many people, WoW is the extent of their MMO experience. So they have nothing else to draw from. For us old time gamers that killed mobs like Cazic Thule, Rallos Zek, Legion, Trak, the Avatar of War, Venril Sathir, Lady Vox, Lord Nagafen, Doctor Vahzilok, and numerous others, the WoW bosses are very watered down and tame in comparison. I lost most of my old EQ and DAoC screenshots when a hard drive crashed on me so sadly I can't post up close and personal screens from the stuff I've killed. There are lots of pictures on the Internet of these bosses though.

Going into WAR, I am expecting to see more of the old style boss looks. An explanation Paul Barnett gave of a demon you will fight is you quite literally cannot see it's head from the ground where you are standing it's that large and this gives me hope we'll see more of this. I wish developers would bring back the old style of boss looks. Some of my best memories in MMOs are from Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, and City of Heroes/Villains. CoX is quite a bit newer, but it captures a lot of that look I enjoyed going up against in the older games.
