Ok well dude, I know that they get hard work for this stuff. Though making a game is more like fun work. Do not fuss with me, becuase I've programmed lots and I know what works involved with it. I know its a lot of work, and they should get payed well, but the fact is.....these people are probably like head over in money. Plus yes you go to see baseball players and such, and they do get millions of dollars, and guess what?? I think thats stupid too. Teachers should get more money than baseball players. You know why? Teachers have a WAY more important job then these baseball players, thats why.
What Teachers should get and do get is another debate altogether. In general highly intelligent and motivated people do not go into teaching. If you want to be vocational be vocational but guess what you will never get paid for it. And you know why because vocational is easy !!!
last time i checked teaching requires a great deal of intelligence. perhaps the more intelligent you the greater your understanding that money isn't everything and you should do something that brings satisfaction.

I know I might get flamed for this by others, but please do not. I'm not trying to be stupid here or anything. I just dont understand...I mean. World of Warcraft has just about 8.5 millions players now. Thats $15 dollars a month, and that means they make just about $1 billion, 530 million dollars. Now correct me if I"m wrong but.....thats crazy. I know that they need money for servers, bandwith, employees and for new content. Though thats just about 1.5 billion dollars there making per year! They definitly do not need that much money. I think that they are just doing this to have there pockets full of 100 dollar bills, and the thing is....people actually beleive that they need all this money. So they glady pay for it. If WoW or any other MMO was to put there money down to about $5 a month. WoW would still make half a billion dollars a year. Thats still enough to keep up there maintance. Also...for those who do no know of these things. A lot of companies that are f2p, what they do is...they have sponsers that pay for a good bit of there stuff and they have item malls. I mean the item malls that do things like....nicer mounts. Not things like...main in game things. I do not support games that make you pay for better weapons and then you can beat anyone. I mean little nicer things. Perfect World for instance survives on donatons, sponsers, and a item mall with just nicer things. They have no main items in the item mall. They have a pretty huge game and very nice things in the game. This game is totally F2P. Now, if WoW would use sponsers, have a small item mall, and do some advertising for side money. They would easily make a $5 a month profit and uphold the servers. If you ask me...I think there just ripping us off. Now, feel free to flame me all you want, BRING IT ON lol
Ye blizzard is making lots of money, but blizzard do not get everything for servers, employees and new content stuff. Blizzard is a part of Vivendi Games, and vivendi takes a part of that income, and who knows what Vivendi is planing ahead and how many other projects is running by both Vivendi and Blizzard.
Plz, start a company and see how your money is spent.
Money is always needed, thats how it is.
And if you dont work for blizzard or Vivendi dont say they got to much money cause you dont know what the heck is going on over there.
Keep in mind, each region/country has its own billing plan based on its economy. People play far less to play WoW in china than they do in the western world.
So, your estimates of Blizzard income are wrong. But, life sure doesn't suck for people at Blizzard. I just wish more developers had a chance to cash in like Blizzard has. There are plenty of dev teams that have made games as good or better than WoW and did not get the popularity that Blizzard has. Funny how video games are like snowballs rolling down a hill. Most snowballs hit a tree or a rock while some make it down the hill. Some snowballs roll farther but don't get as big. Weird.

MMO's from the get go had subscriptions, but the subscriptions were lower to 10 or 5 dollars a month. The reason was that companies needed the constant cash to keep the servers up, customer service etc., but remember during the early days of MMO's they did not have millions of subscribers.
Blizzard now charges 15 dollars a month to an astronomically huge playerbase. They claim the same thing I have stated before, but they could probably charge 3 bucks a month and do just fine. Sorry to bust your bubble Blizz-supporters, but they are cheating everyone who plays. Blizzard/Vivendi does not nearly need the amount of cash they need to "upkeep the servers and customer support". The money thats coming in is ridiculous.
It is also sad to see people defend the companies saying "its a business" and "deal with it", "its the business's job to make money." Yes, it IS the business' job to make money, but it is also YOUR job as the consumer to question the business's practices and set things straight. I know this will probably never happen in WoW, there are too many idiots who defend the company and too many addicted - but hey, whatever.
Keep on paying the 15 bucks for a crappy game like Wow. Its not coming out of my pocket.
EDIT: by the way, telling The OP that he has no grasp for economics based on his age - when he made a well thought out post and a much more mature one than yours - is not only stupid, but childish in its own right. You made yourself look like an idiot buddy, especially when his argument makes even just a little sense.
This has got to be the dumbest logic I've ever read.
First off, World of Warcraft is a business - the point of business is to make money, and as much money as possible. If right off the bat you have a problem with businesses making as much money as they can, then you need to find yourself a country that doesn't have a free market.
That sums it up. Sorry but this is a dumb thread. They make stuff, to make stuff you need money. You get money but selling stuff. That's just how it works.
Aye, you wouldnt walk into a goods store and take what you want and walk out would you. I don't mind paying a subscription per month. However the subscription has to be reasonable for the game.
e.g World of warcraft was and is worth the £8.99 subscription, EQ2 was/is NOT worth £9.49 a month, £8.99 maybe. Vanguard just isnt worth paying for in its present condition at all, Lord of the rings is not worth their asking price of £9.49, i wouldnt even say its worth £8.99 either, Maybe £6.49-£6.99. It's just missing some key elements to make it last. I said this through beta and got blasted for saying it, now quite a few players are complaining of boredom of the game.
So to some it up, Subscriptions per month is fine, JUST as long as there fair for the product they charge for.
P.S i do not agree with segregation for games players (US and that side play on US servers, Europe play on their own servers), if for gods sake SOE can have everyone joinign together (rarity for SoE to have something good), i damn well am sure that other companies can do the damn same too. But no they say they will during pre-launch and 1-2 months after launch, but 6 mths later they say no. Beaurocratic BS in my opinion.
Personally I have no problem with MMROPG's charging a monthly fee. What i do have a problem with is when game developers say they will use that fee to develop more content, and then release the content that the fee was supposed to develop in an 'expansion pack' and charge us twice.
I'd rather get charged 20 bones a month and get decent content added every month in the way of a new zone or dungeon or some such than get charged 15 and find out later that the devs have somehow found the free time to produce an 'expansion pack' that costs another 40$.
Now I understand that companies need to make money and I have no problem with that like I previously stated. But when i get an inferior product I vote the only way that really matters anymore.... with my wallet.

that is only 1.5billion dollars a year...that is good for a company, im sure that microsoft makes more then that selling computer software, xbox's, etc etc..i could be wrong, i could be right, but take 1.5billion, take away server cost, take away server maintenance, paying GMs, paying dev's...i dont think there'd be too much left, i meen, they probably have 100s of gm's for there many many server....and also, they need money to fund development of more games, so then add the cost of those game's development...also there is things like websites, they need to pay for those too, quite a lot also seeing as they are probably high quality sites....
so, would prices of 5-10$ be nice? yes, of course...is it going to happen? more then likely, no...

Yeah i agree, apart from being charged more.
Have you also noticed the expansion packs cost teh same as teh original game on release, hell i would'nt mind buying the expansion packs, AS LONG AS THEY COME WITH A FREE MONTH, just like the main game did. After all expansion packs add 10-20% extra to the game, and a couple of touch ups, they charge the same but you don't get teh free 30 days.
Now i see companies have started releasing game+expansion all round into 1 pack, new players get the first month free (in the game's price) existing players lose that 30 days (unless they create a new account) but have to pay the same price. Unfair isnt it.
So Blizzard is making the big bucks, and they can afford to create their next big game and other projects down the road.
Good for them, and hopefully they continue to make products people enjoy. If the programers and such are getting the big take home paychecks, maybe it will entice more people to go to school and learn skills that earn them a good living. I would much rather see people rewarded for their work and ingenuity rather than getting paid a million dollar salary for hitting a ball. Sports stars are insanely overpaid. Why should the guys that provide us with digital entertainment be paid any less.
Just for the record I just stopped my WoW subscription because I am bored with the current level of content. But that is me. Obviously lots of people are still enjoying it and will for quite some time. Good for them, good for Blizzard, now the rest of you developers out there have a goal to achieve. Steal some of those WoW $......
you have played free MMOs right?if you want them to play like a P2P you NEED to buy the exp potions and other junk from their shops to be enjoyable, because if not they are this mind numbing grind to just get to lvl 10. all the F2P i've tried i only play them on the side of a P2P game for breaks.some are alot of fun (Cabal is the funnest F2P i've played IMO) but they lack any real substance or content.

The "need" for money and the actual "want" for money are two different things. What you Want and what they will Give are also different
The calculation is simple and based around "Make you pay as much as possible for as little work as possible"
No, they don't Need the money. Neither did any actor the big movies, yet they got Millions. No musician that's Big today Needs the money. They make Millions (Apart from The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, as he actually just gave away his latest album for free, but, well, apart from him)
And, yes, they could lower the cost by ALOT But why the hell should they when we're paying more?
Don't worry, you'll become greedy like everyone else as soon as you get a taste for money. We've all been there at some point and most will never leave. It's all part of growing up and becoming corrupted.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.

Read first 2 lines then retired from reading your crap. If you wan't people to actually read your posts USE PARAGRAPHS.
I look at this and see a chunk of text..I think to myself, hell if he can't make paragraphs then he can't make a good point. I then went back and pained myself through it to see what you are on about.
In simple they don't need it all no. But thing is, they aren't ripping us off at all, not one bit. If they wanted to just make a game and invest millions, then host it for millions to just make a small profit what would be the point? They made an awesome game, they host it with no lag, they are the biggest MMORPG ever created...So why shouldn't they charge people enough to make a huge profit? They made it, they set the rules. It's like saying you shouldn't have to pay monthly for your internet or food should be free...
It's called a service, like if you go to a garage. You expect service, they expect payment. With MMORPG's it's the exact same thing, you expect to play an awesome online game with 8.5 million players..They expect you to pay monthly.
Why do you think other MMORPG's are F2P, because they are budget shit that no one wants to pay for..I assure you if they got 8.5 million people wanting to play and willing to pay a small amount a month they would. So go play crappy F2P games or pay 15 dollars a month which is nothing at all.
Theres a lot of people digging their hands into the MMO profits. Lesser known or even medium sized MMOs need that money. WoW is a huge exception though I think and they are making money hand over fist. Most MMOs don't break even from their inital investments until their first year usually. WoW did it with box sales alone . Heres to hoping they put that extra cash into SC2
I know I might get flamed for this by others, but please do not. I'm not trying to be stupid here or anything. I just dont understand...I mean. I hesitate to ask what you do for a job and if you work in a large company. If you work in a large company you would know that the money just doesn't pile up in a bank.
Besides maintenance for the game there is futher development. Then there is money that goes to new projects. Money also goes to salaries. And health insurance (which can get very expensive). There is also profit sharing for the employees, compensation for injuries, money to maintain equipment, office space, insurance, supplies, lawyers fees, etc.
Now I don't know if Blizzard is a publicly traded company. But if they are you could look up their quarterly or year end reports and see what is going on with some of that money.
True, a half billion a year (provided that that is really what they are bringing it - though I'm sure they are doing well) is a lot but that money can get eaten up. For instance, how much does it take to build an A grade title? I thought it was about 50 or more million? That is just one new title.
So yes they are doing well and I hope that that money trickles down to their employees but they are a company with expenses.
That is like asking Starbucks to cut its prices because the mark up on coffee is extremely high (which it is... believe me, that cup of coffee you are purchasing does not cost 2-3 dollars. but when you look at all the expenses that a large company can accrue you see that it really adds up.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Ok, for all you people that think I"m a stupid 15 year old that knows nothing of capitilism and the world of economics...YOUR WRONG. I understand it perfectly well. I'm just saying that I think there ripping you off because there basically lying to your face. The company tells you in interviews and all "we do everything we can to help the user". That's not true. People have said it on here before and its true, THEY DONT NEED TO MAKE YOU PAY THE MONTHLY FEES. They just do that cause..yes..its a business. I am not a communist, and whoever said "I hope I'm not paying taxes for kids economics class". Well NO your not. Though you are paying taxes for the governement to waste it on war, and you are also paying taxes illegally because paying taxes and the IRS is against the constitution. Once again thats a rip off right there and just another way for people to make money.

Ok why don't you make a company, develop an MMORPG that has Thousands-millions of players and see if you don't need people to pay a monthly subscription. Or better yet, go to school, get a job and learn about life.
WoW=Money for Blizzard... Blizzard = lots of game. Work it out, they are a huge company that has developed 3 games which have dominated the market..They deserve the money they get outright.
If they e-mailed me and said, we need money money per month...Then I wouldn't be ok with it..But they are undercutting most MMORPGs and no others give you the service they do. If something is broken, you can bet your ass they will fix it in next patch..Patched almost weekly..Maintenance weekly in early hours so it doesn't disturb play too much. Spammers, a few days later...ANTI SPAM.
They deserve every single penny they make, don't like it? Tell someone who cares or make an MMORPG as good as WoW and don't have monthly payments.

This is a rediculous argument by people who know nothing about economics.
First, your numbers are all wrong but people have already proven that in previous posts.
Second, last time I checked a company is about making money... capitalism... look it up.
Third, the oil industry made 78 billion in profits last year. Few people are even complaining.
Fourth, you pay between $8 - $10 to go see a 90 minute movie. That works out to $6 - $7.50 an hour. How many hours a month do you play MMOs.
Our education system is definitely failing our youth. OP please take a few days and read about economics before posting again.

- Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
What you Want and what they will Give are also different
The calculation is simple and based around "Make you pay as much as possible for as little work as possible"
No, they don't Need the money.
Neither did any actor the big movies, yet they got Millions.
No musician that's Big today Needs the money. They make Millions (Apart from The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, as he actually just gave away his latest album for free, but, well, apart from him)
And, yes, they could lower the cost by ALOT
But why the hell should they when we're paying more?
FIFY.

I dont care what you have to say.....if your just going to flame me than LEAVE
