Reasons Why...

I'm currently looking foward to WaR but with the push backs its having, frag knows when its gonna be released.

So I've decided to check out AoC and where else could I find a better reason to play it then from what the fans can tell me.

What I want is afew points which makes AoC more worth playing than WaR. I dont want nothing like "because WaR is for little girls and AoC is for reall men" I want actuall features that make it better than WaR (or just as good).

p.s - I am not fishing for people to insult either game all I want is constructive critism and really good general reasons why I should play AoC.

I think that the best argument for Age of Conan would be the combat system. Now, I haven't read as much about WAR as I have about Age of Conan, so some of this might apply to WAR as well.

You have many different types of combat in Age of Conan. The mele combatsystem looks great; it's more a in-depth fight than what I've seen in other MMOs. Instead of having an auto-attack on a target enemy and doing some special attacks ocationally, you are constantly controlling how you want your character to fight. You don't target one single enemy, but turn your character towards where you want to hit, and hit in what direction you would like. This enables you to hit more than one enemy at a time. By attacking from different angles in a certain way you can create combos which ultimately does more damage to your enemy, some providing you with "finishing moves". You can also fight on mounts.

Ranged combat is also pretty different than in other MMOs. Here you also, instead of targetting one player and auto-attacking them, you have to aim at the enemy. You have two different ways of doing this. One is the "sniping" function that you basically aim like a in a FPS game (It looks like this). They also recently added a "cone attack" where you see the player from a third person like you normally do, and when you shoot it automatically shoots at the enemy that is closest to you and most directly in front of you, provided they're inside the "cone". You also have a target system in ranged combat similar to that in mele combat. Rangers are also capable of doing ranged combat on mounts.

Spellcasting in AoC also has something somewhat special: Spellweaving. It allows you to build spells in what Funcom likes to call a "container" before you unleash it, giving you a much more powerfull spell. This can backfire however, so more powerfull spells can have a more dramatic affect on the persom casting it (including killing him/her). Several casters are also able to go together and spellweave, hopefully providing a wide range of spells :)
Unfortunately, Funcom hasn't given much information on spell-casting in AoC yet. Hopefully they'll release some info on E3. :)

There is ofcourse many other features in Age of Conan, but I think this is what makes it most "special". If you're really interessted, you can find a lot of information here, since I can't write it all down here :)

Actually engine wise WAR , using gamebryo 2. 2 is a very solid and proven engine. The big difference is WAR is all public property,in AoC it's guild property. So would you rather defend your home or a public library. It's also alot more similar to DAoC.10 player groups can be so much more effective kill ratio wise than a 6 player setup. Those are my main reasons.

top 3 things drawing me to the game:

    • innovative combat system
    • no running through other players
    • PVE and PVP levels are different

You should try it regardless of if you'll be playing WAR though. I know I'll be trying both out. If you've played MMOs for any length of time you know its almost always funner to start playing when the game is released. Creating a community is one of the most rewarding things. could just be me though

And WAR is a WoW clone, and AoC is not.

Thats all the reasons i need.

Sure there are so many other good reasons why to play AoC instead of WAR, but im so sure ALL WILL play AoC instead so i dont have to talk about any of them.

For me it has to be that it promises ongoing reasons to play.

With player cities and Battle Keeps you've always got a reason to keep logging in, defending your property or taking someone else's!

Some people say that the 'real time combat system' will get old and it's just a gimmick, well that's a fair comment I guess, but the standard MMO combat system we have today of click target, select spells / abilities from the action bar, repeat until target is dead is kind of old anyway. I don't think it's something that will become boring once you get used to it, you'll just be used to it. Funcom claims that it's easy to learn, yet difficult to master.

Crafting seems to be taking a different road too (I generally don't enjoy crafting), where advancement in this area is quest based rather than make 500 copper swords, make 200 silver soled boots etc.

PvE and PvP have seperate level systems, either adding more depth or more grind - this remains to be seen.

The graphics look great, even if some of the character faces look a bit sketchy, those crazy eyes are a bit hard to get used to...

All in all it looks like it's going to be a very well rounded and complete game with something for everyone.

It's really hard to nail something down and give a really informed opinion without having played a game, although I do follow this game closely and have watched many videos etc.

I'm a fan of fantasy, always have been, but I'm a bit tired of elves and dwarves so AoC is a breath of fresh air in this respect for me in that there are only human races to be played.

One of the biggest 'Reasons Why' as the thread title says is that I'm a part of a great group of people, Primal Fury Guild. MMOs are all about the people for me and if 80% of the guys we've got right now play then I'm going to have a great time!

Things really do remain to be seen though, but I'm hoping that it's all they promise it will be.

*edit* oh yeah and "because WaR is for little girls and AoC is for reall men"

They are not even remotely close to being the same game.

I would post the reasons why, but ravid fanboys don't listen to reason, so why bother?

    Ooooh the ignorance...it HURTS!

NO, the Devs never said ANYTHING about WoW, they NEVER compared WAR with WoW, intentionally. Whoever gave you above information is probably a stupid WAR-Hater.

    Just inform yourself, sheesh

Public? Not really. Guild property in Warhammer are Races. It is your home you are defending. It is your races survival.

Ok then the truth might lie in the word "intentionally".  Cause I took it form a Paul Barnett interview(so I really hope he isn't a stupid WAR hater:-S). But rewieing it he said: .................call it WoW 2.0 if you like, but..........................

And BTW I actually look forward to WAR aswell, but then again this is the AoC forums.........

Please link to this quote from Paul Barnett.  Because I have no idea when this was ever said.  The only place I've seen the comment "WoW 2.0" is in the hype comments for WAR on this site, or in a forum thread here.

I really would like to see this actual quote. :)

And anyway.  Saying something like "Call it WoW 2.0 if you like, but" is the same thing as saying "Call it what you like" or "Say what you want."

I don't think he was actually saying "We're trying to be like WoW" as much as saying "Insult us all you want, it doesn't matter."

(If indeed he actually said that.)

I asked for actual reasons not "WaR isn't worth it cas, even though I haven't played it, I know its a WoW clone."

I dont understand the need for fans of WaR or AoC to slag each others game off. Obviously your entitled to your opinion and if you think either game is better than by all means, state the intended features you think are going to be better, not features of the other game which you assume are going to be shit!

I dont know if anyone noticed but I did put a p.s in my original post asking for exactly the opposite of a comment like this.

You know I heard that doctors recently found out how to implant new brain stems for people you should get that checked out.

Anyways I've only seen 2 or 3 decent posts on giving reasons why this will be a good game. Please take time to post a REAL comment instead of trying to be funny.
