Star Wars Galaxies: Jedi Expertise - Dev Diary

The Star Wars Galaxies official site has been updated with a developer diary detailing the evolution of the Jedi Expertise System.

Howdy! I'm Thomas "Hanse" Eidson with another designer diary for y'all to peruse. The first diary I wrote explained a little about what a system designer does. My second diary had a high level explanation of how I approached a balance issue with Player versus Environment (PvE). In this diary, I will explain how I approached the Jedi expertise in Chapter 2.

At the time of the first expertise chapter, Jedi had already been revised and given many special actions. Their special actions were way more powerful than any other class and they had a larger variety of them. The expertise's intent was to allow for players to customize their character in a way they wanted to play as well as make them slightly diverse. This also went in hand with something to look forward to spending points on as you advanced with the profession.

The brainstorming began for the expertise. One of the other designers had been assigned the expertise and already had a basic flow chart designed for them. I had been assigned the Jedi by Helios and took over. Since I had a limit on introducing new abilities, I roped a few into the expertise. Too many new abilities would have caused major problems for designing the other profession expertise, as we might not have had time to complete the entire profession changes needed. The theme for the two expertise pages were general and the other light and dark abilities.

I believe Hanse has done great work,

I feel as many that the question should be asked when compared to the other professions,"Is Jedi Expertese where it needs to be?"

With Bounty Hunter, it was the first implimented.  BH is getting re-evaluated.  Will Jedi?  It is known that Blix does not care for the Jedi much from his CU design days but it does deserve some attention.  That said, Smuggler is another light wieght that could use some re-evaluation.  Two of the most important Star Wars Classes and yet least viable professions, now, in SWG.  I mean viable in the sense of PVP and solo PVE.  I do like that a special system was designed for Smuggler but it just doesn't go far enough.  The whole Spice issue needs to be re-considered.

I'm just curious if they have an explanation, lore-wise, of how come there are so many jedi running around during the time of the Empire. Answer that one for me and I'll THINK about trying the game again.

Here's my stab at a lore-friendly explanation for all those glowsticks: the Sith were subverted by marketing droids who are in the pay of the Trade Federation and they got greedy and flooded the galaxy with midiclorians.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Folks have asked that exact question since preCU. I doubt you will ever get an answer.

"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

It is obvious you haven't played for a long time. It used to be where there were tons of jedi running around but no more. Now there are tons of commandos and BH's running around. Very few jedi. It is just like the movies. SOE finally figured out how to make it realistic. Make jedi the weakest profession in the game and nobody will play it. It seems to be working great!

just wondering when wow fanbois will wake up and see that wow riped off everything from EQ and warhammer. hell even LOTR.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

good points, I'm not denying any of that (p.s. - not a WoW fanboi here) - but SWG did blatantly rip off WoW in many facets as well, and $OE clearly targetted WoW-like numbers as a major part of the rationale for the implementation of the NGE.
