EverQuest II: Shadowed Men and Sirens Added

KoltraneKoltrane Member UncommonPosts: 1,049

SOE has added information about two more creatures over at the official EverQuest II website.

Shadowed Men were the first high level creatures many players encounted in the original EverQuest, as numerous young players accidentally stumbled into one of the many camps placed in close proximity to newbie hunting areas.  As you may expect, the Shadowed Men will be returning in EverQuest II:

Little is known of the Shadowed Men. Highly intelligent, extremely organized, and very secretive, they communicate with one another without a discernable form of speech, perhaps using telepathy. Those rare souls who survive meeting them say their voices crackle with electrical energy. In the past they appeared to have no visible bodies, but their swirling forms now flow with a power drawn from some distant realm.

Also, many EverQuest alumni vivdly remember their first encounter with the sirens out on the spires in Ocean of Tears.  These, too, will be appearing in EQII:

The sirens are beautiful and alluring creatures of the aquatic realm. Female humanoids with beautiful fish scales covering the majority of their bodies, the sirens are said to hail from an underwater kingdom in the depths of an unknown sea. They are the keepers of the secrets of the oceans, having existed for as long as the elven races.

These and other EQII Creatures may be seen on the official EverQuest II Website.

While its nice to see the return of familiar foes in new settings and to continue to get some storyline behind them, I don't see why SOE are taking so long to add information.

They seem to be taking drip feeding to an extreme, almost to water torture level!

Given the choice of the old sirens from EQ, and the new ones from EQ2. I'll stick with the old ones. The new siren just looks like an old crazy lady thats got barnacles on her ankles.

They panic, so just hold them down

I'm closing in; hate all around
    I could be like this
Hearing them, them in my head
How could they be so sweet... sweet?

These guys need to read up on their mythology. They got the siren thing all wrong.

Sirens are notoriously evil shapeshifters who lure unsuspecting sailors to their doom, with their unnaturally beautiful voices and looks. Then, once the sirens have their prey at their mercy, they shapeshift into their 'real selfes' - hideous hungry beasts who feed on human flesh.

True, they can do what ever they like, but they can't call their creations sirens, because sirens are well-described in mythology, and the mythology dictates everything sirens are.

Oh, yeah, I wouldn't mind meeting those sirens either. There's always a chance they change their mind and don't gobble you up. (literary) And hope is the last thing to abandon man... and men we are ... so look out sirens, here we come  :D

Out of curiousity, where did you come by you information that Sirens appeared as beautiful women to attract their victims, and then, once they're snared, turn into hideous Reno beasts. After a quick google search, all the info I found pointed to the stantard upper body of a woman, lower body of a bird, which is also a harpy basically. And the only real mention of them was with Odysseus, and Jason and the Argonauts. Though, the last page had some interesting info, such as the contest between the 3 sirens, and the Muses, in which the sirens lose, and get plucked.

I can't remember who it was, I think it was Odesseus, but maybe it was Jason. He was securely tied to the mast of the ship so he could hear the beautiful voices of the sirens. His crew had ear plugs to avoid being entranced by their song. They saw the sirens change into 'monsters' surrounded by bones of sailors once they got close. Pottery depicting the captain tied to the mast has been found in the Mediterranian. I saw a program about in on Discovery many years ago.

In reality it's just another myth that tries to explain a treaserous coast, but you have to agree, that this gave us some of the best fiction stories in history. The idea that all these myths have some root in reality makes them even more exciting.

The info I have found about sirens depict them as man-eating beasts with bird heads and beautiful singing voices. It's the voices they used to lure sailors into reefs and cliffs, to feast upon their carcasses. There is no mention of female beauty here image The idea of sirens being beautiful must be something modern....

And creatures with the lower body of a bird and the upper body of a woman is a harpy. They're encountered by the Argonauts during their travels.
