You know that it has never been announced "A next generation MMO", what is next generation anyways... 70% of the people on these boards are screaming in blood rage for games that had their spring in the early 2000s and late 90s. So to hell with next generation...

Plus where the heck is this game cartoony? I want ONE cartoony shot of this game... Colorful, yes, cartoony, no way...

Also, there are tons of differences to WoW, and I AM sick and tired of listing them every single day just to see them ignored another time. If you don't like the game, good for you, if you need to hammer obvious game-characteristics out of your consciousness to justify your dislike for a game, bad for you...

    Cheers,

I am currently farting around in LoTRo and honestly I find it very boring..Not the fault of the game..it looks great, plays well and has an awesome story behind it but it is nothing new, that is the problem...It is not fun to grind it out..

Same things, talk to NPC here, kill mobs there, deliver message to NPC X, Need to group for quest finish Y..blah blah blah....Its the same every where...

Potentially an awesome game but it will fall b/c of the genre..(Although its a great into game for anyone starting in the MMO scene).

Just saying that you can compare this game, in features or graphics, with games 3 years older... It brings nothing new to mmorpg. Dont get angry :) its just my opinion and traying to explain it... You can like it, and, perhaps you will not like others that I do, but this is good. diversion is good

I just think its more of the same and get a name "lord of the ring" to call all the fans on it, but, the core of the game, have nothing new, minor changes are not enought for 3 years, with poor animations, with an inexistent pvp, with no customization of the char, with no classes to choose, with no diferences between players... I mean, I was expecting another thing from a "new game", and also, I say again, coh/cov, are more original, and more interesting in ideas, and in end, than this one, you can like or dislike, but, you cant negate that is "differente", meanwhile, lotro is the same that wow, and the same that l2... a fantasy game, with no customization, griding and poor instancing... also, they have some marketing (lot of wow, not in the part of l2) and a name "lord of the rings"...

Im happy that you found a game you like, but, I dont like wow and its probably why I dont like this one too.

K, again... Things I could NOT do in WoW but I CAN do in LotRO: Play music, Play REAL music, color my gear, play with builds I have worked for, enjoy exciting questlines, level wholly and entirely through (exciting) quests, roleplay, roleplay seriously, play a monster, level through exploring and deeds; these are not ALL the differences, but these are the differences that pretty much make my gameplay experience differ AEONs from the one I had in WoW. WoW was all "kk thx need T4 go grind Kara 100th time", I AM spending 60% of my LotRO time just standing there tailoring, selling dresses with no stats or playing real music... all the difference in the world...

One last ultra-compressed statement: Combat mechanic, challenge, sandbox and PvP are NOT defining the quality level of a game (aka junk food game).

I agree - they do not define the quality, and I have remarked that the quality is good for LotRO.  But those things DO define teh type of game it is in relation to others of the genre and I think anyone who is looking at it even somewhat objectively would agree that LotRO, like it or hate it, is of the more simple game and on the fast food/summer action movie side of the spectrum.

However, the game is very linear and simple, doesn't allow players to have much choises. It's like ready design path what player has to follow.

    So very well said.

The game could have been a  very involved sandbox game with skill sets instead of classes.  The world of Middle Earth is very rich with content that could easily transfer to an MMORPG.  Instead of harboring this, the game chose to copy the style of World of Warcraft with only a few changes (see also: gimmicks).

It's sad isn't it? The game was originally called Middle Earth Online. It was a sandbox game, it had an interesting dark/light system kind of like KotOR, and the whole premise was "Live in Middle Earth." However, after an information blackout in 03-04, the next news announcement was that Turbine won the rights to the game from Vivendi. Turbine had always been developing, but felt they were being held back by Tolkien Enterprises.

After that, everything changed in a VERY short amount of time. Corruption system was scrapped, sandbox was scrapped, Middle Earth was sort of dumbed/watered down significantly. The name changed to Lord of the Rings online to reflect the new direction and it became a linear, hold your hand, quest driven game.

Now, I enjoyed LotRO for what its worth. It was too much like WoW for my taste, but its a good game. I just felt they didn't do justice to Middle Earth by forcing you to follow these paths made of fake hills and making sure you were guided along every step of the way. Now, Middle Earth Online, a sandbox game like SWG, Vanguard, and AC1 would have been amazing. Unfortunately for most of the old MMOers, WoW was a success.

It's too bad the original devs for MEO were too damn slow to get anything out.  But they sure did have some interesting ideas, like Corruption system.  I knew the game was doomed when Turbine started changing the name, but at least they were able to make a product, unlike the original devs.

Actually it is not just LOTRO, it seems like nearly all games out in the past 3 years are just more of the same. LOTRO just happens to be hyped a lot more, but since WOW/EQ2 release, there simply is not much out there of any interest.

And I never played WOW, and I still think that LOTRO is the most boring MMO i have ever played.

So what you are saying, is that LOTRO is better, because you spend most of your time not actually playing it, but standing around tailoring and tapping out some music?

    Neat.

I'm sure you won't listen to me though, because you've already posted about 6 times in this thread trying to tell everyone who is bored with the game how good LOTRO is, and its obvious you can't comprehend that other people don't see the game the same way you do.

Plain and simple, LOTRO is only for those type of people who enjoy the LOTR lore, enjoy roleplaying, and play extremely casually.  What you fail to realize, is that this particular demographic isn't that big.  Turbine was shooting for WoW level subscription numbers, and failed miserably.  Sure the game seems to have sold well initially, but that was only compared to other PC games (read, not consoles).  The game will flop just as soon as people realize that the company behind LOTRO is the same company behind AC2 and DDO.  The *only* thing that LOTRO has going for it is the LOTR name.  Without it, the game wouldn't even be a blip on the radar of your average MMORPGer.

And yes, all of that is just my opinion.

LOTRO was actually fun to begin with, but then i had a 1 week break because i had alot to do. When i logged in after that week i though "What the hell am i really doing? Is killing some lizards and talking to quest NPC's really fun?" After that i cancelled my sub.

The thing is, its really way to simple, and in my opinion doesnt feel like Lord of the Rings since only Eriador is available as playable area.

Oh I DO see that other people have different interests and I AM not saying "comeon all play LotRO its so great"... In fact, if you are an achiever type, stay far away from this game...

The point I want to make (which is repeatedly ignored): The game is not shallow just because character development and combat is not what the hardcore-crowd expects. The point is, yes, I enjoy "standing around crafting, playing music and RPing", BUT, LotRO is the first game that allows this, because it realizes the lore so perfectly, because the right people are there, because you CAN play music and craft on a casual foundation just for fun... I'm NOT not playing the game, I'm just playing the mmo RPG part of the game.

Everyone here can say LotRO is an easy going game that's forgiving. I agree, but drawing the conclusion that "the game is boring" because you got bored or "the game is shallow" because you coudn't cherish its great parts is downright ridiculous. Which closes the ring to my earlier post: If you think it's boring - fine. That doesn't MAKE the game boring though.

I can state that I found EvE online boring. Still I say it is a great game. At ONE time. Because I don't need to project my own perception of a game on its quality. THIS is the crucial point here, it's incredibly arrogant to say "game X is boring because I myself, master of MMO knowledge, got bored"...

Oh, and it is the reason I repeatedly post in this thread...

Here Here Meridion i agree 100% all in all every 1 has an opinion and that is there opinion alone just because they don't like it or a bored with it does not meen the game is this way for every 1 it is just this way for them i meen i can say every other MMO out there sucks for various different reasons but that don't meen the game sucks just means i don't like it, For once i would like to see a topic on these forums where it stays completely on topic or should i say if some 1 wants some positive feedback i would like to see all responses positive and the same goes for negative post because these love hate threads are getting real tiresome and i know i don't have to post or reply but it is what i do when not playing or working, i'm not saying all the community but alot of the MMO community IMO has  gone to shit and the need to get into a good game and just have some fun has pretty much gone down the toilet.

Cant we all just get along lol

Perhaps you two were unclear on what thread you were posting under.  Let me refresh your memory.

"What do you MMORPG players think of LOTRO?"

Thats the title of this thread.  It means the OP is interested in hearing players opinions of the game.  Some think its boring and shallow.  Obviously Meridion does not, but his whole crusade is to somehow prove that everyone's opinion is wrong, and he has to post 7 times to try and prove it.

What Meridion fails to realize, is that when he presents a statement like "LOTRO is not shallow", he is merely presenting his opinion as well.  Just because you like a game doesn't make your views factual.

We get it Meridion, you like the game.  But it doesn't make every other negative opinion about the game any less valid.

Oh, and SWG had the whole standing around crafting, playing music, roleplaying thing a long time before LOTRO did.

    Equal opportunity troll.
