Did the MMO community in general help kill AA?

Deathstrike2Deathstrike2 Member UncommonPosts: 1,777

The game got off to a rocky start, and despite several great enhancements to the game, it died in the end.  My question is did the forum goers here help put the nail in the coffin by constantly trash talking Auto Assault?  Are we as a community helping to destroy decent games?

My opinion is this:  MMOs change.  If it's been more than 6-12 months since you've logged into the game, you probably shouldn't be trash talking the game.  Chances are the game your trashing has changed significantly since you last logged in.  This goes for Vanguard, SWG, and any other game out there.  Dead MMOs stifle our community's diversity and creativity  a little bit more with each failed game.

Online communitites often hurt or kill games.

Just go visit FoH website and consider that they may not have kill any game, but they stop EQ and WoW...stopping the BEST MMOS from further growth outmatch any killing of a puppie MMO.

Auto Assault died because of bad game design, stop trying to excuse it by blaming others.

    No.

Look at the beating WoW gets on this and most other forums, yet no one can argue its successful, and getting stronger.

Regardless of if you personally enjoy it (yes, HeLL_SNX, I know you don't like it) and no matter what type of gamer you think its geared toward, its a very successful, popular game no matter what negativity in the gaming communities have to say.

WHilst I may appear to be behaving in a Fanboyish manner, all you need to do is trawl back thru the older threads in this area and look at how many useful, non 'anti other game' like posts I have made in the past and you will see umpteen posts about how <insert troll remarks here> Auto Assault is made by THIS community even tho the majority of those were posted by players who only played the Beta.

"Did the community contribute to the games death?" << was the question.

    "YES" is the answer.

The game already had negative publicity through its bad Beta start-off which everybody and their mother already knew about and YET THIS COMMUNITY insisted on coming here to badmouth it and scare off any potential newcomers to the game.

"Did the community contribute to the games death?" << was the question.

    "YES" is the answer.

Is the game in a perfect state of non buggyness and balance?

    NO its not.

Did the game need some support to encourage more players to try it out in its latest updated state?

YEs it did, hence my presence here.
Believe me, I'm not here 'cos I enjoy posting here.

If my latest remarks are of a fanboy nature, its only due to the repeated b****ing & biast remarks THIS COMMUNITY has made over the duration of me posting here.

    Thanks for your support.

I don't think the community had anything to do with this.  I think it has more with a lack of getting people to play the game.  I only saw adds for AA in a few places, and ever fewer as the year went on.  Meanwhile the only people who were really 'bad mouthing' the game (even if you can call it that) were former players who just got bored.  I never saw the kind of things that your talking about.  There never was a general feel of people posting to make people afraid to play the game. The general consenous was more along the lines of it was fun, but it got boring quick.  It's not like in EVE where the Devs went nuts and like in WOW where dead gnomes are being used as advertizements.  The game just got boring.

Fraid I gotta agree with Sonix on this one.  This site and many others are filled with people who have either only played in early beta and go out of their way to bad mouth it or who have literally NEVER PLAYED AT ALL and go out of their way to bad mouth it.  (as an example, one poster here on this site made a point of taking his exact same comment onto every single AA related thread across several websites - same author, exact same words, same totally unfounded claims based on nothing but looking at screenshots)

Don't get me wrong - the game has some serious flaws.  It's not perfect by any measure, but is it even remotely deserved of the drubbing it's taken here and on other sites of this nature?  No way, not even close.  The way people whine - in the same thread - that it's too much like twisted metal and too little like twisted metal is an example of people who are talking without knowing what they're talking about.  Is that a failing of the community?  Not so much the entirety of the MMO crowd, but certainly the actions of a particular "Game snob" segment of that community hav had a negative effect on the game's ability to draw a crowd.

In other words - it's not the only reason, but the answer to the original question of this thread is most definitely, "YES."

Sucks or not, like it or not, thats not the issue.

Anytime ANY virtual persistent world is snuffed out of existence it should freak the hell out of anyone that plays mmo's. Why? Cause every world that's shut down makes it that much easier for the next one.

We now have four main retail MMO's that have been killed to date. Earth and Beyond, Motor City Online, Asheron's Call 2, and now Auto Assualt.

As long as people are playing... I have a hard time getting behind shutting it off, especially  when we are talking multi million/billion dollar companys... I know companies are about the bottom line and making a profit, and maybe Im just nuts, but virtual worlds are virtual worlds... its someones refuge, someones home away from home, someones special get away... to have that killed with a flip of a switch just freaks me out.

The other side of this is... companies that shut the mmo's down usually wont let go of the IP or server code. If your killing a game... let others enjoy it. Sell it for 50 or 100 bucks, you will have people who will buy it. Will you make a few million? No... but your game will live on.

    Anyways just my 2 cents.

Community didn't kill this game, the developers not explaining/marketing the game correctly long before the beta began is what basically killed the thing before it even got started.

Put it this way, back when the game was first announced (this was long before the beta ever came around) I went to the homesite and found what quite possibly sounded like a dream come true.  This game was advertised as a "MMO car COMBAT game).  Now to myself and apparently many others that meant something along the lines of an Interstate 76, Carmageddon, Twisted Metal type game play but in a MMO environment.  The website talked about things like gaining rank and such in order to equip your cars with custom armor, weapons and other jazz.  Garages where you could work on your cars and have a persistent place in some apocalyptic world where you hung out before hitting the open field Mad Max style for some killer FPS style car combat with thousands of others.

Sounds cool right? Well if you're into car combat games it does. It would have still been a niche game but a fun one. Fast forward to the beta starting.  I myself was happy to be invited into Wave 2 of testing.  What I found when I first logged in was not in fact a car combat MMO but instead just another typical MMORPG.  Same old mold of go do some quest, level up and collect items.  Pretty much PvE and that was it.  Any interest in PvP was killed within the first hour of playing when I found all you pretty much did in combat was hit the tab key and hold down fire while driving in circles or just reversing.  I wont even get into to horrible game mechanics such as the cars not even handling like cars...that really isn't my point in this post.

The beta boards in the early days were an uproar of people like myself asking the developers basically "wth is this?".  The game delivered was nothing like what was explained pre-beta.

You had myself and others posting not like morons but actually explaining to them why they had 20+ page threads at the top of their beta boards of people giving up on the game so early.  At least IMO I'd say AA lost probably most of its potential subscriber base within the first 5 waves of testing.  The game just simply wasn't what most of the audience they had drawn to it was wanting and those who didn't mind the MMORPG aspect probably figured they would just go play one of the bigger more mainstream MMORPG's.

As far as community's being able to kill a game off from flaming it.  Not all gamers are idiots.  People can tell the difference between some 12 year old just bashing a game they don't play for the fun of it and a smart, experienced ex-player giving real details and cons as to what potential players can expect.  Half the post on the front page of these general forums are younger players who actually think "the game I'm playing is always the best one" trashing WoW yet the thing still gets new subscribers every day and will probably still have live servers when I'm on my deathbed.

I hate to see any MMO die really.  Not because I think crappy games should keep flooding the market like they are but by the point AA was at, it had a community and the game they enjoyed and characters they put effort into are now done.  Anyways, plenty of us tried telling the developers in early beta this thing would never last in the huge market they had decided to put it in rather than being the only game of its genre around.  Understandable it was too late for them to rework so much.

Heres hoping to some developer one day actually giving us that persistent world car combat game.  I still think it would do well and if done right would get my $15 a month for a long time.

Kinda long, but this game was one of the bigger disappointments to me..
