Not a joke. Session Play is the new feature coming in Book 10. Similar to monster play, but your session play characters aren't saved between sessions. Your completion of quests using these characters is saved and you will earn rewards for your regular character by completing them.
For Player vs. Monster Player in the "PvP" zone, Freeps and Creeps are each getting session characters, Rangers and Trolls!
For those not into PvMP, Book 10 will introduce Chicken Play! Yes, you get to play as a chicken in a series of sessions quests that introduce you to a number of storylines surrounding various animals in Middle Earth.
When the full series of session quests is completed, you unlock a repeatable session quest so you can run around when ever you want as a chicken!
Granted, a silly diversion, but pretty cool and definitely original. With the mechanisms in place for this, I'm sure we will see more session play additions in the future.

B'GOCK?!
I just had a vision.
Imagine, if you will, a new player entering the world of LotRO. He looks around, not a single person to be seen. However, the amount of chickens is staggering
LOL

I love it! I also wonder if we can hover.. I could so see cliff diving...
Are you kidding me? Thats absolutely ridiculous. However, I guess its neat? lol.
I've never heard of anything like this before. Why would they want us to experience the story line from different perspectives before they've even implemented Rohan, Gondor ... anywhere else.
I have yet to even try Monster Play.

I just spit beer out my nose and all over my monitor Hahhahhahaha that is too damn funny. Those guys are nuts

For those worried that Chicken Play somehow took away from development time they should have put elsewhere, it was implemented by one developer when he had time to work on it. It seems that the technical functionality that makes Monster Play possible also makes it easy to add this kind of session play.
Chicken Play promises many hours of additional quests and a repeatable quest once the arc has been completed. I think it's an interesting breath of fresh air. I remember all the April Fools day jokes at Blizzard about Pandara, but it was always a web only joke with no in game functionality. With the system in LotRO, they can easily give us regular or just special event session play characters or creatures in the future with out much additional development time. I just hope they take advantage of this and offer more unique perspectives to play from in the future.

Well it should certainly be an interesting diversion. Like the OP said, people keep saying they want something original, and it does not get more original than playable barnyard critters.

Hmmm a PvP idea... what if players could choose to 'possess' creatures like wolves or maybe even Wargs... roam until they are killed, most likely by an player who they decided to attack...
Imagine playing as any regular hero of Middle-Earth.. walking around and seeing a wolf suddenly attack a boar... the boar fights back but the player controlled wolf obviously takes the victory.
I've always thought it'd be cool if predatory animals attacked weaker animals...
ANOTHER IDEA : Bunny Race. I see these cute bunnies all the time imagine having some crazy race to take part in hopping around...
last one I swear... FROGGER! Anyone else notice the frogs? This 'take control of other things' idea for lotro could introduce some fun lil minigames...
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
You're not doing the normal storyline quests as a chicken, the chickens have their own chicken quests such as defending the farmyard from wolves. Totally a diversion, unrelated to the rest of the story/content.
Has this been verifyed or just a rumer people are jocking about? I mean, chickens??? cmon the game devs have a HUGE part of middle earth still to START to create but use that time creating barnyard quests? I highly doubt it
100% true and I am 100% looking forward to it.
They should first implement a proper Evil Side, make Urik'Hai, Orcs playable Races.
Until that happens, I won't touch LotRO...
If you had bothered to read the article, or even bothered to notice it's an article posted on the official site, you wouldn't have to ask. Yes, it's real. And only a single developer worked on this, and only during his spare time, so it's not like the whole team said "screw the rest of Middle Earth content, let's make chicken quests!"
Ok, see ya, bye. Won't be happening. The reasons why have been discussed ad infinitum. If ya want normal PvP there's a gazillion other choices out there.
chicken races FTW. Make a chicken race where you have to make it across a field of wolves intact.

Rangers, trolls and chickens as session characters sounds like fun. I'm getting this game when I get my new rig

And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there.

I agree.
Wait for real MMO like WAR or AOC or something else. (PVP or Pve based)
If you like Tolkien, forget it.
Canceled my account ASA I discovered chicken play wasn't a joke.
Don't want to pay 12€ /month for playing a chicken.
lotro is a game for - 12 years old children.

I belive Professor Tolkien would love the idea of playing a chicken. The Hobbit was a book for children and LOTR is filled with "childish" things. The most silly behaving character Bombadil, is also one of the most powerful one. So if you belive chickenplay "degrade" Tolkien's work, I do not agree. BTW what is it about AoC and WAR that makes them a more real MMO for adults? Is it the nude mobs of AoC or WAR's drunken giant public quest ? 12 year old children will not love that, no sir.

I'm pretty psyched about it. Turbine has either had a stroke of brilliance or lost their minds. It will be fun to watch play out either way :P
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
a real game would have given you enough replay incentive to roll an alt. but since lotro has only a couple of classes and even fewer races not to mention the same quests regardless of which class/race you pick you guys get "chicken play" instead to keep you occupied......and are excited about it
hook
line
sinker....
Can you do other quests in Chicken form ? Join a group ect ect or only certian quest solo ? I wan't to see a group battle thru fornost with a Main Tank Chicken
That USUALLY goes hand in hand my friend. Personally I would love to see a minigame where you are a fox and you have to kill chickens while avoiding the farmer and his REALLY big stick. I love how they are breaking away from the normal "grind, grind, grind, pvp, grind, pvp, pvp, grind, grind, bored, grind, grind, bored, bored, pvp, bored, grind" mold, I mean cmon, they implemented player made music into the game, now THAT I wanna see something big happen, I would like to see a bunch of peeps get together and form a band and play awesome music. closest thing I ever saw to that was SWG, and you could only play premade songs. sure, there are only 4 races and like 7 classes, but they got most bases covered without being repetitive, I mean seriously, EQ2 has 2 classes for pracitcally EVERYTHING and most of them have little difference between them.
while this sounds like a cute idea at first, you have to wonder how long or how many times people will really want to play a chicken.
Kind of like the pub crawl and fireworks in the current mid summer festival. A half dozen of us from our kinship got virtually hammered in the pub crawl quest and shot off some virtual fireworks the other night. Was a fun change of pace from leveling/questing but not something I want to do every night.

This is just to stupid to be true
And in case it actually is true...
Well, I just dunno, I lost the respect I had for Turbine I believe..
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
