First off, Hi everyone, new to these forums, but they look good. Ok, now down to business.
I would like to tap everyone's game knowledge to help me find a new MMO. I have played EQ, EQ2, WoW, CoH, FF11, LOTRO Beta, and Guild Wars. While each one has things I really like (for example the Guild Wars art style, EQ2's mature community, and CoH character customization) they are usually lacking in the other area's (Guild Wars & WoW have a generally very immature community, EQ2 feels like a dying game, and while technically impressive, has a boring art style. FF11 is way too much grind-fest, and CoH also feels like its dying)
So, what I would like are some suggustions, and to help my priorities are:
(1) Mature community, not a bunch of players who are clearly children
(im 22, and listening to people argue that fat people should have more sex to lose weight makes me want to smash my computer)
(2) Healthy amount of players. Enough to where the world feels populated, but not the 8 million that WoW has, since it starts to affect requirment #1
(3) Good art style. not neccesarily amazing graphics, but a style thats fresh and looks cool. Women avatars that look like women are nice too (major compaints for EQ2, everyone looks like a man)
Thats about it. Iv been interested in Vanguard, but cant seem to find an updated review of it anywhere, so feedback about that would be nice. Also if the population on CoH has risen at all, that would be awsome. Thanks Guys!

Hey Everyone
hmm vanguard. i cant really recommend it, but i cant really say it sucks. i know i beta tested it, and for some reason ended up buying it and playing it for a good while. a good number of things happened along the way to make the game an even more watered down version of its original self. its like even more watered down version of eq2. basically same style of gameplay. pretty much the same level of graphics, but pushed a lot more. like bump and spec. maps on EVERYTHING. the problem you will have with that game is population. if you do play it, make sure you have someone to play it with. vg is kind of still in development though, and is set to relaunch eventually. (has it yet? i stopped caring) it got bought up by soe so you can play it with station pass. its still pretty new, so theres no expansions to have to buy. lots of patches though heh. hard to say about the communtiy aspect. there are some diehard people that are sticking with the game, and people that come and go. with any other game, some are cool, some arent. to me, the communtiy wasnt any better than WoW's, because the game ended up being so casual friendly. you said you played eq and eq2, so vanguard wont be anything new to you. its basically the same thing but with wow style quests, eq2 (kinda) crafting, and wow/eq2 style harvesting. if you search around, you will find a lot of negative press about the game. most of the game sites reviews are a bit off, but most of the angry forum posts are pretty spot on. its ok.. but just ok, or i would probably still be playing it. but.. if you can find it cheap and already have station pass, give it a shot i guess. just bring friends. even clerics have trouble finding groups in vg. heh
i dunno about the daoc recommendation. if this was a few years ago i would say go for it, but it would help if you could have someone to play it with. i went back recently and could hardly find anyone doing the pve side. its all about the rvr and most of the people that do that part of the game, have been doing it for a good while, so they will destroy you. and even with updates, the graphics just arent that good. overall its a good game though. its just been out for a long time, and has a lot of expansions to it. you can get it pretty cheap though as a bundle.
i would never recommend any of those free to play games. thats just my opinion, but i have never seen or played one that was worth the download. if you want a really mindless, easy, diablo style free game, download dungeon runners. its free to play and dl, but they try to sucker you in to a 5$ subscription with better items. at least there is no trade chat spam or towns full of vendor farms like the other free mmo games.
if your looking for someting that is like eq2 or wow quality, i dont think you will find anything till new stuff comes out. im having the same problem atm. kind of a draught in games.
ive been killing time with battlefield2 and guild wars.
Thanks everyone for the info and your experiences, and thanks for the info about Vanguard, I was excited when I read it was actually a chalenge (which i read about EQ2 from its lauch review) but its sad they they simplified it too =(
I agree that most F2P games are bad, usually due to the player-ran shops and all the little kids who get to play free online (even Guild Wars suffers from this, though not as bad)
I got into the Beta for 'Sword of the New World' but it runs rather poorly (im guessing cause of Vista, Dual-Core processor, or both) and I cannot stand the click-to-move interface, so my shimmer of hope got smashed. any other games still accapted Beta's? Iv tried getting into GW:Nightfall, but it was just more of the same... When oh when will Bioware make an MMO.... *dreams*
from bioware website---
BioWare Austin has already begun work on a Massively Multiplayer Online roleplaying game (MMORPG) title; the new game will mark BioWare's debut in the Massively Multiplayer Online space. BioWare has recruited some of the top talent in MMO and RPG development, both to manage the development efforts at BioWare Austin and to collaborate with the experienced team at BioWare Edmonton, to develop a game that combines the best of BioWare's great past games with a compelling persistent online experience. Joining the Austin team as lead designer is James Ohlen, BioWare's Creative Director, whose previous credits include lead or co-lead design roles on Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™, Neverwinter Nights™, Baldur's Gate™ and Baldur's Gate II™. Also leading the BWA team are MMO veterans Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton. Richard Vogel brings 15 years of experience to BioWare Austin, previously serving as VP of Product Development for Sony Online Entertainment's Austin studio, as well as launching Ultima Online™ as a senior producer at Origin. Gordon Walton recently served as VP, studio manager and executive producer at Sony Online Entertainment as well as VP and Executive Producer at Electronic Arts.----
no clue what kind of game it will be though, except they have said that they are big enough now to be able to make thier own titles based on their own theme/idea, instead of using another IP like star wars or DnD.
as for betas i guess you could try to see if they are still taking apps for tabula rasa (ncsoft). they are still in closed beta, but i was able to get in awhile ago. it might still be possible to get in on the beta for the redo of UO. if you have a file planet account or maybe dont need one, check that site for mmo betas. though they often have the freebie ones on there to dodge. war and aoc are taking apps, but dont think we will get in for awhile yet.
kind of slow for games in general till later in the summer i guess.
No game has it all. The only solution is to play multiple games. When I want a bright vibrant game with an over-the-top feel and a lot of people, I play WoW. When the utter stupidity of the community gets to me, I play EQ2 for a while until my WoW headache goes away. After all of that, I'm sick of collecting tons of loot and looking like every other character of the same class and race, and I fire up City of Heroes. Eventually, I want a little more depth and variety, and I go back to playing WoW for a while.
have you tried ryzom ?
ryzom has the BEST game community hands down, the population altho not large is present and active.
i'd be playing more if crappy cablevision had me routed more efficiently, but i'm stuck in "please wait" hell every 3 minutes making it all but impossible to do anything but forage and craft.

I would personaly reccomend The saga of Rryzom. (mainly cos i play it )
Ref 1 & 2: I would put the average age (on the 'paying' Mainland) about 25. most of the players know alot of the other players. Big battles involve a couple of hudred people. but if you want you can venture off and find places not populated. it all depends on whether you want to have people around you all the time. It's no WoW, thats for sure
Ref 3: The graphics are average, nothing spectacular. They have things like Bloom and with the settings all up, it looks pretty. It's a fantasy world with 4 biped's which semi resemble humans but the customiseation on the characters is pretty impressive better than the majority of games ive played.
Plus, Ryzom has unlimited (time, but limited level) free trial, on a seperate island. the player base there, although younger (avg about 19) still seem quite sensible.
Ive not played VG for about 6 months so no idea. I've never played City of heroes.
Best of luck whatever you chose.

thanks guys, ill defienlty check Ryzom out after work. I just remembered a game I wanted to play when it first came out (but only had Dial-Up) called Lineage 2. I defienlty like the art style they are going for, but they have no free trial that I could find, so any input about that one? Thanks guys, everyone here is awsome!
EDIT: Also thanks for the info about Bioware making an MMO I dont know how I missed that announcment, but that is AWSOME! Bioware has yet to make I game I didnt like (usually love) so that news made my day. thanks!
L2 is a good game, but the bots are just horrible and the community leaves a lot to be desired. all in all tho, it's a good game.
