Three Types of MMORPG players, Which are you?

I've successfully came up with three categories of mmorpg players.  You will find that you are going to be in one of them.

Three Categories

1) Good Aligned (3% of the mmorpg population)

Known as: Heroes, Zealots, Paladins or those who have sworn to fight against evil players. Evil players whose sole purpose is to bring chaos to everyone, everywhere.   If a good aligned player is successful in protecting a newbie from being killed by an evil player, he/she will feel a great sense of accomplishment.

2) Evil Aligned (3% of the mmorpg population)

Known as: Dread Lords, Dark Knights, Thief scum, Griefers.  Evil players love to kill newbies or veterans. They enjoy bringing suffering to everyone who gets in their way including other evil aligned players.  The misery of others is their fuel and they are only out for personal gain.

3) Citizens (94% of the mmorpg population)

Known as: Carebears, Peasents, Common Folk, Cows, Sheep. These are the weak players of the mmorpg world who neither fight for good or evil. They simply play mmorpgs to engage in combat vs the computer because it is easy.  They enjoy getting an item and once they have it, they strive to get the item that is .05% stronger. This cycle continues.

Summary

The only mmorpg's I've played that allow for good & evil is some old muds, Meridian 59, Ultima Online old days, Asherons Call Darktide Server, Shadowbane, and that is about it.   Before Everquest came out mmorpgs were about players fighting against each other no holds barred, good vs evil.  The strong endured and the weak suffered.  It was brutal but fun as hell.  Unfortunately after EQ came out, everything went soft.

The mmorpg's of the old days was about Good players vs Evil Players.

The mmorpg's out now are about getting the next stronger item.

Now decide what are you? Do you want to be good aligned and actually suffer some loss in order to achieve a greater victory? Do you want to be Evil aligned and just spread carnage and chaos for personal gain?  ... Or do you want  to continue to play games like EQ, SWG, WOW, LOTRO in which the only goal is to get an item that is stronger than the previous one you had?

Are you a carebear? Are you evil aligned? Are you good aligned?

Guess which segment of the market game developers will chose to design to?

Wonder why?  The original games like UO were designed that way because developers didn't know any better.... soon as someone tried breaking the mold of the early games (EQ) MMORPG's suddenly became mainstream and popular...otherwise they would have been doomed to total obscurity....

I think there's room for more Pvp... but other than a few niche games you'll never see a major (ie large number of subs) FFA pvp game unless they go back to the early roots....make loot unimportant so that losing it doesn't really hurt that bad.... make the game about the combat..heck, reward players by letting them level up more from Pvp kills than PVE....

But there still has to be havens for the PVE crowd..or they just wont spend their money.....

I am a peasant seeking to become good aligned. Tis a dream of mine which I might never achieve. It is good to dream.

You forgot the fourth type: Trolls who make pointless posts on forums in an effort to get attention/feel better about themselves. Sadly, there is a high percentage of these types as well. In fact, the population tends to overlap the 6% combined minority of the first two types.

I thought this thread was about the different types of MMORPG players, not forum posters?? Am I wrong?

So, either I'm pure good, pure evil, or I only play games where I can fight easy mobs?

They only "successful" with this post is making up pure bullshit...

This is a joke, right? Or an angry OP who hates people and doesn't understand players?

I agree. There aren't many options to choose from. I prefer to be Chaotic Neutral. Even if I have a hankering for being Lawful Good. <sigh>

  • AnofalyeAnofalye Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 7,433

So here is how the OP sees the world:

    - Defensive/Vindicatives PvPers who correct wrongdoing.

    - Lame and unskilled PvPers who need to ganks and attack by surprise.

    - Awesome socially advance and complex interactive players...

The OP obviously belong to the Lame and Unskilled groups, and to top it he seems unable to discuss or talk properly, his only means of communication in game is to attacks or not some other players...it is unclear if he attacks peoples he likes or if he doesn't attack peoples he likes; anyone's guess is as good as mine here.

Level / math based MMOs make very poor PvP platforms.

Interesting post by the OP but sadly just a Troll as he only acheives calling the majority a bunch of carebares. As a PVPer though I guess his only aim is to Grief and that is his only atempt here.

This is just a Troll and as such should be ignoredas just that . Just pathetic

Lol, i agree with this. OP just better be glad hes not in the same mmo as me. Since hes definately the number 2 group, he would be hunted until he quit. Good game.

I dont get this. In MMOs its often the "evil" players that are the best ones at what they do!

This lead to that all carebears and many "good" players know they dont have a chance agenst the "evil" ones.

So the conclusion is that evil is stronger then? (in MMOs)

P.S This is not really a  especially serious post.

Good vs Evil is a very 2 dimensional and boring concept.

There needs to be more multiple factions games where each one has it's one views and alignments to each other, this concept is designed well in the roots of the cyberpunk genre where a hand fulls of large corporations run the world and each one has it own unique alignment of usually Friendly, Neutral or Hostile to one another and is more about making alignments to survival in a corporate world instead of the basic Good vs Evil concept.

I remember playing M59 but it was recently and not enough people played to have good PvP...that and it was a tighter community insted of an "I'm gonna beat the crap out of you" community...i'd love to see this ideal resurrected...maybe that'll be part of AoC or Warhammer...and yeah, i'm getting sick of carebear games...i also remember shadowbane but got sick of the bugs and didn't get far

as for my side, i flip-flop over all of them...when i start a game, i like to think i'm neutral, whether i am or not...then i'm usually good but make toons that are evil to experience the whole game...but most of the time, i'm good...

LIGHT SIDE RULES!! THE DARK SIDE IS NOT STRONG WITHIN ME!!

    EDIT: palys are fun

I believe one of the new games coming out is going to be offering level by pvp just as easily as level by pve.  I can't remember which one but that to me would me it a LOT better for everyone.  Giving a purpose to PVP more than like WoW where you can earn points towards items that are ALMOST but not quite as good as the items you can get from PVE raiding dungeons.

I think that PVP should be just as big a part of the game as PVE, and that participating in it should be just as rewarding for your character as for yourself (ie the satisfaction of being able to outsmart, or outlast another REAL player)

So uhm, if I'm not outright good or evil I'm a sheep? nice black and white conclusion there...

  • CactusmanXCactusmanX Member Posts: 2,218

I don't really like the whole Good vs. Evil idea, talk about unrealistic, good and evil is nothing more than opinion.

In truth every side is just self-interested, only the methods very, I think it is better if every faction/kingdom was ultimatly interested in their own gain, just like real life.

The only time people care about others is when they think that person is useful to them, or if they just want to look like a good person.  And people seldom are just malevolent, being cruel to everyone is a good way to get yourself killed, you gain adoration by powerful people and trample over the weak, that is how you become successful.  One person's hero is another person's tyrant.

Disregard any allignment, fight for money and land (if applicable), be in a guild and just fight against anyone while increasing its numbers, alliances are only as good as long as they serve a purpose, that's human nature.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

The people not be doing it for the sake of being evil, but there are people who go around killing lowbies because they have nothing better to do, or they can't do any better.

  • Darkseth12Darkseth12 Member Posts: 148

i guess im in the category of evil aligned. Killing anything that is weaker and looting them is what i do

  • snowmonkysnowmonky Member Posts: 93

I'm probably evil aligned in mmos. I enjoy killing all that I encounter, which usually consist of the weaker population. I enjoy killing veterans more, so I never consider myself as a griefer.
