MIP Mapping? Someone please help

dhaevndhaevn Member Posts: 28

Before I start to play FFXI, I checked out the config settings. Under the general tab, there is the option to turn on or turn off MIP Mapping. I used the "Help" thing to see what MIP Mapping was... however it's still unclear to me if I should enable it or not. I have a very high-end system running in 1280x1024 & GeForce 7800 GTX (dual-core). I just want the best visual quality for my FFXI play. Could someone please explain to me if I should have MIP Mapping checked on or off. Thanks!

MIP mapping is a process were a texture has multiple versions of itself created, each at a lower resolution. So, if a wall texture is 1024x1024, it will also have a 512, and 256, and 128, etc etc version, down to 64x64 or 32x32 (sometimes even lower). The game then substitutes the lower resolution textures based on the distance from your character. So details far away get reduced and thus require less CPU or GPU power to drive them, since a 32x32 texture takes up less memory then a full 1028x1028. Your card likely supports this feature, give its a newer card.  Far away objects tend to have less details visible, so not only is it saving your system resources, but its also realistic.
