Spellweaving- why still under wraps?

JarloJarlo Member Posts: 221

As the proposed October release date creeps nearer and nearer, I am getting a little concerned about the overwhelming focus on the melee system.  While I think the combat system will be interesting and fun and I certainly intend to play melee characters, that has been an astonishing derth of information on the spell system.  Now there are a few videos recently released that show a magic casting player but there is no evidence of the vaunted "spellweaving" system that has been mentioned.  Honestly in the videos spellcasting looks like the button mashing of all the other MMO's out there.

It seems a bit late in the game for a new and innovative magic system to not even be in the testing phase.  I would love to see some example or evidence of how this new magic system will work.  Between this being hidden still and the lack of PVP videos I'm getting a bit concerned about my most anticipated MMO since DAOC.

And yes I did search the official site and such and only info on it is the little blurb that spellweaving will be how magic works.  No details at all.

This is what we know for sure about the info they will be giving us.

At E3 they said they will be talking about the pet system a lot more, and hopefully get into spellweaving. (expect more at E3 as well, they just havnt told us what.)

In August they will blow the lid on siege warfare, and hopefully give us everything weve been wanting to hear about it :) So basically a good chunk of info mid july, and another chunk sometime in August.

Something about the spellweaving or females would really be something to wait for, before the game is released.

Im mostly interested in melee combat, but some of my frinds gonna play purely from what they have heard about the spellweaving.

    Thats brave.

The AoC team is more about showing off their melee advancements but expect to see more about this in august. Most games usually show off melee systems more than magic because it often leaves more to look at.

Nothing to be concerned about unless E3 comes and goes w/o more information being released about the game.  If that happens, then you can be concerned about the Oct release date....for now lets wait and see......

Dont forget the Leipzig GC in August either, between that and E3, I think we'll have an extremely good handle on things, and have the majority of details we'd be hoping to find.

With just over 100 days to release they sure as heck don't have a lot of time for a decent beta in my opinion. It has to be one damn smooth game before I will buy it these days, this is not 2001 and there is a lot of  competition for the gaming dollar. I am hoping for the best with this one but I  have  doubts, seen too many D%L's and Vanguards to be much of a optimist anymore. I don't rely on press releases and 15 second video clips for judging game quality.

    I miss DAoC

E3 will either shatter or confirm all doubts.  Wednesday cant come fast enough.

Its still under wraps because its some of the sekret sauce.   These developers are not stupid.  The moment the concept is put out there people are like... hmmmm... and how do you do that at other developement houses.

We have no need to see spell weaving copied by EQ, EQ2 and every other mmorpg before AoC hits shelves. Kuddos to Funcom for keeping the sekret sauce sekret.

There are two reasons why a developer would keep proof of a feature secret:

    1) To hide it from competitors until the right moment

    2) To McQuad the playerbase (promise a feature to pump up sales, but not deliver)

Anytime you accept lack of proof, you open yourself up to gullibility. The number one rule I always follow is:

A FEATURE ISNT IN THE GAME UNTIL ITS IN THE GAME!

Never ever form an opinion of a game based on what they *say* is going to be in the game.  Make the developers put up or shut up.

Well long term fanboi here turned hater I guess you could say.. And yes I have been a fanboi for a while for this game (early 05 and a member of the official AOC boards since Apr 05).. Anyways just to toss my opinion into the mix, I believe we haven't seen anything more of AOC spellweaving because the developers know it will be a turnoff.

So far from what I have seen combat looks extremly boring and buggy, and the few spell animations I have seen look absolutly horrible. I know people are going to come in here and say that those are not going to be the spell animations we will see when the game goes live or that the game is still in beta, but whatever.  Like I said I have been following this game for a few years now and nothing has really changed as far as how combat is looking.

As a former Anarchy Online player(2 1/2 years), I cannot begin to tell you how dissapointed I am from what I have seen so far. While this game will be indepth beyond belief (because thats what Funcom is good at) it will not be exciting and fun as a GAME (even a MMO GAME) should be IMO.

You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
