How Do You Make Money On SecondLife

klubzklubz Member Posts: 2

I have heard that people are making money on SecondLife, and even set up businesses around the site and I am fairly new to it all...How is this done? Any ideas?

Thanks

  • Yes some people do make money in Second life, just like some people do make money in pyrimid schemes. To make money in SL you will have to invest money, at least thats what they want you to think. If you really want to start your own business it would be far smarter to start a ebay store rather then try to make a business in second life, because in second life there are many many more failures for every half a succus.

I got hooked into SL for a while and decided to try to make some money, I had a decent shop, I won't deny that I was making profit, but the problem was the profit averaged out to about $2.50 per hour in time I spent modeling or texturing something. So while it is possible to make money in SL, if the sole reason you sign up is to make money you will be sadily disapointed.

It's not tax free. You'll actually have to write it on your 1040.

It would also be hard to work 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

I really hate it when people say why invest in something in RL?  Reason is it's too damn expensive.  In SL you don't have to buy an island to succeed, in reality you really don't have to invest very little money at all. When I first started out paying $15 / month for land.  I haven't looked back since.  It's not easy and not for everyone.  It's like the real world how are you going to get noticed?  Like on Ebay how are you going to get noticed from the millions of sellers?

Tax free? HA! Look up Ansche Chung.  The IRS is after her because she earned a couple million with real estate (she was a pioneer so don't even think you can match her, everyone is trying it now) The point is she isn't even a U.S. citizen but since the servers are in the US the IRS is going after her anyways.

well, not to get your hopes up, but i did hear that i girl made a good income on selling land or something like that.

like everyone else here says, i dont think its an easy task, you have to put many hours and it will probobly take months/years before its any kind of payoff..

easier way would be to play Project entropia.. but then again, if you dont grind this sci-fi mmo or your not any good, you will still bite the dust.

either way, if you dont have work IRL and are able to play 24/7, maybe you can have an income in an mmo..

    over and out

I played Second Life for a while under Mikey Brody but I never really got in to the whole economic part of things. I really did meet alot of weathy people though at town events/clubs. Its a pretty fun game, need to have a better then decent PC to play it though. If your going in to just make money you need to really learn how to use the building tool. I met someone who would make ships and watched him build them but it was insane. There was another dude who let me on his space ship and threw me some money, It is without a doubt a game that everyone has to try. Its really fun.

If you're already building things now and want somewhere to sell them where you don't have to own your own land you can check out SL SMART.com

That actually sounds pretty awesome. I am fairly new to SL but the customization stuff makes it so fun, so a place to find stuff like that is useful. I had a hard time finding things at first, then when I did, I didn't understand how to get money. This place seems to actually do a currency conversion for you. Very handy.

This game sucks, I wouldn't even bother with it let alone play it.

However in order to make money you need to be willing to invest money

Set up business and sell your product, then exchange the linden money for real money.

1 you can buy cheap linden from others, one of my friends has buy lot of L$, he said its realy cheap

the site is gpkoo, com (doesn't mean to ad,if this break the rule plz delete it)

2 another way: buy a full guide with 9 $ (cost 9$ 5 month ago) from ebay.and the guide will tell u how to do everything in SL,

then you would be rich since you are a master already

    Hey,

Well everyone knows it takes months and months to build up wealth on this game, but after you have achieved the goal of Wealthiness and great deals of land such as clubs big houses etc...it can pay off. As mentioned in an earlier post a young lady in another forum made a solid living from selling land that she had worked for.

As for buying a SL manual on ebay, that is a no go area. Just experiment with the game the more you learn independantly the easier it will become later on. That way you remember and dont have to keep referring to your 'How To' Manual. Whilst a lot of people try and make some sort of living out of the game there are others who simply play it for fun.

    Well Hope This Helps

There are basically two ways to make money in SL: content creation (building things) and the landmarket. Many imagine they will run a club or something, but it doesn't work that way. Unlike an RL club you can't charge for drinks or entrance fees. You might break even by subletting parts of your club to vendors, but that's it.

A successful content creator can make a good living from SL, there are even a few that has gotten rich from it. It doesn't require any initial investment either. But what people tend to forget is that it's an artistic profession. And just like being a musician, author or actor, only a tiny minority will ever make serious money from it. For every success story in SL, there are a hundred shops who barely make enough to pay for rent. Not everyone can have a hit record.

But if you're artistically talented and prepared to devote your life to 3D graphics, it's a viable career.

The landmarket is another way. Everyone tries to be Anshe Chung after she got famous, but the reality of it is that it requires large investments, have small returns and carries huge risks. To make any serious money from it you'd have to own land worth tens of thousands of dollars (if not hundreds), and the market tends to crash every time LL releases new servers. Open source servers are also on the horizon.

I don't want to sound to negative, I love SL, and the money making opportunities are very real. But all the media hype has made a huge amount of people come to SL thinking it's "easy money". They don't bother to learn the tools or understand the market, they just put up a shop selling crap they put together in five minutes or stole somewhere. Then cry "SL is a pyramid scheme" when they fail due to their own incompetence.

Know the truth is somewhere in between. It's going to be very hard work, but it is possible.
